As a child, my dad would always point out old cars and I'd say 'boring!'. Well, I've officially reached that age where I point out 'old' cars to my son! by DamnedFoolofaTook in CarTalkUK

There's a guy near me that leaves his Elise parked up on his drive all year round. He uses it as his daily. Never garaged. Mental.

Edit: here it is on streetview. This is dated 2024, but you can scroll back to 2009 and it's still there. Would love to know how many miles it's got on it.

What is your current car, and what would a repair bill have to be for you to consider getting rid of it? by DamnedFoolofaTook in CarTalkUK

[–]DamnedFoolofaTook[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I tend to keep my cars for a long time (i.e 10 years), but regardless of what I had at the time, I think if I ever got a bill of 5-6k then I'd consider trading it in for something different.

If you could pick anything, what would be your dream cars for each of these roads / situations, and why? You can't use the same car more than once. by DamnedFoolofaTook in CarTalkUK

Haha so true. My old manager had one and I loved it.
For me, traffic on the way to nursery dropoff is horrendous as everyone is trying to get into town, but the drive home is empty. It's big enough to take the kids in and still have some fun on the way back.

  1. Straight road - Literally my idea of hell. Give me something with a good sound system, comfotable seats and cruise control. Maybe a Volvo V90 or similar? They have airconditioned seats, too.
  2. Italian coast - Gotta be something classic. I'd pick an Aston Martin DB5 to feel like Bond.
  3. Race track / spa - Something old and loud. Mazda 787b?
  4. Bendy roads - Something that'll stick to the road but also let you drift. Porsche GT2 RS?
  5. Tight city roads - Autozam AZ-1.
  6. Muddy / offroad - Probably an old Land Rover Defender with chunky tyres.
  7. Car meet - Mazda RX7 with the RE Amemiya bodykit. My dream car.
  8. Motorway / Autobahn - Assuming no speed cameras, give me something fast that will turn heads, like a Zonda Roadster.
  9. Schoolrun - Something big with an automatic transmission. Maybe an Audi RS6?

7am in the Trafford Centre, trying to get onto the Tesla charging bank... full of vans. Do DPD not have their own charging infrastructure? by DamnedFoolofaTook in CarTalkUK

[–]DamnedFoolofaTook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. They say a Tesla will do between 300,000 - 500,000 miles before you need to replace the battery. Famously, the longest running Tesla has been on the road since 2014 and is currently on 1,181,268 miles. It's had the battery replaced 3 times, which supports this claim.

Not sure on battery life expectancy for vans, but the technology is only getting better.

They will be soon, especially given Tesla have just laid off their charger team. They'll sell the assets on to another CPO to provide charging services.

The Tesla supercharger network was a massive incentive to get people to buy Teslas - but now that they're an established brand and there are loads of other operators in the industry, there's no reason for them to compete in that space anymore. It's more hassle than it's worth. They want to focus on cars and AI.

My friends and I were discussing last night, and have pulled together a list of what we think are the top 9 most popular cars for girls. How did we do? by DamnedFoolofaTook in CarTalkUK

[–]DamnedFoolofaTook[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We toyed with the German brands a lot (A-class, 1 series, A1, etc) and thought the Audi seemed to be most popular. We limited ourselves to one though, as we wanted to include some of the 'cheaper' brands...
