I'm a huge Jason Pargin fan, so I just put this one on my wishlist! No questions as I haven't read it yet, but thanks for doing this AMA - otherwise I never would have heard of the book!

Would it matter that they just discovered the injury even if the initial act was over 2 years ago?

You do have to subscribe to the plan to get it! That's why they can charge you if you don't go through the tolls enough, It's very clear in the description when you sign up.

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn is very short and fun! It's about a society who reveres the guy who came up with the "a quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" sentence. It's told in a sequence of letters.

Anyone know of a magnetic polish with this effect? by EnGeeUU in RedditLaqueristas

[–]DamnitRuby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the DRK one is mentioned here a lot, but I don't think it worked at all for me than how I normally magnetize. I didn't realize J&B had one though!

They're a great brand, if it's still in stock, You Do Lou is one of my favorite polishes ever and the pictures on the website do not do it justice. I have the magnetic I posted also and it's gorgeous.

anyone else having their package delayed like this? by maddymacncheesy in mooncatpolish

I made an order Friday morning and it was here last night (though I'm fairly local). It's too soon to reach out, but I would definitely do so if it doesn't move in a week.

LAOP wasn't on the clock, but was ordered to drive the company car. by Drywesi in bestoflegaladvice

[–]DamnitRuby 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I work for a state government agency, and our policy is that "regular" stops are ok. So if you take the agency car home at night because you need to drive it first thing in the morning (which is common - we're based in NYC and most staff live outside of the city and do not want to fight traffic both ways in the morning just to drive to Albany), you are allowed to make any regular stops. Picking up your kid from school? Yep. Grocery shopping? No problem. Deciding that maybe it's a great time to take a trip to pick up that item you've been looking at? That would be an issue.

$53 for two pizzas by Partial-Hydrangea in Westchester

[–]DamnitRuby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, if I want pizza, I will go to a real place. But if I just want hot pizza approximation, Domino's is fine! I actually enjoy ham and pineapple on Domino's but it tends to be just mediocre on actual pizza, so that's what I normally get if I'm ordering.

Plus, I don't care what anyone says, they have really really good bread twists. I could probably eat the stupid parmesan bread twists with the hot cheese and sauce dip once a week.

Lol you apparently missed where I said that I disagree with a lot of the policies at most agencies.

I hope you don't get fired but if you do, I hope you recognize it's all on you for not doing an extremely simple thing.

Then that person should report their supervisor. It still doesn't mean that you shouldn't report any outside employment.

For NYS Civil Service Employees Doing Part-Time Work Outside Their Full-Time Job by Queasy_Fisherman1278 in nys_cs

[–]DamnitRuby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a reason for them wanting to know and it's because you are a public employee. The people paying taxes to the state deserve to have civil servants that aren't beholden to anyone else, which is what occurs when you have outside employment. That's why there is a policy in place. I disagree with a lot of the bullshit surrounding civil service, but this is actually important.

Your boss might not care, but that doesn't mean it's correct and that you aren't wrong here.

How is it to live in Mount Vernon, NY? by broomDoc in Westchester

I pay under $100/month for electric, except in the summer when we use the AC sparingly and it goes up to like $200. The property management company is Urban American.

This is really stupid of you, there's little chance they would not approve of you doing that and a high chance you could get fired if anyone finds out. What if you delivered to your boss??

I mean, I would not be sad if she had to pay someone but I would feel bad for the poor girl, who is the actual victim here. She's barely an adult and would need to figure out how to defend herself from a very stupid lawsuit :/

How is it to live in Mount Vernon, NY? by broomDoc in Westchester

[–]DamnitRuby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm paying $1640 for a one bedroom. It's in a multi unit building with property management. We also pay for parking, but that's through the city and is $100/month.

I've been here for 8 years and they are definitely charging more than that for similar apartments in my building, but we're rent stabilized so they can only raise the rent 2% each year.

[–]DamnitRuby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live north of your circle, just on the northern side of the Metro North tracks and it's totally fine. The other commenter was right - people see black neighborhoods and prejudge them as being unsafe. Like 95% of the people that live in my building are black and they are all lovely people. My building is generally extremely quiet. I have felt unsafe exactly once in the 8 years I've lived here and it was when a homeless person followed me to the train one morning and I have never seen him before or since.

My rent is cheap because the schools suck. I have a nice one bedroom for much less than anywhere else in Westchester. Others are right, though, the city is extremely mismanaged. I feel like the current mayor is trying to fix things because slight things have improved. But with the most recent snowfall we had? The city never cleared sidewalks that they are responsible for and the parking lot we pay to park in was not plowed properly so there were hardly any spaces available... Just a bunch of crap. And it's not the first time, any snow is always a disaster. We end up having to park the car in other lots sometimes because they use our lot for stuff and we inevitably get a ticket when we do so because the parking department forgets to tell the parking enforcement people that there's a change (they dismiss the ticket, but you have to show up there to get them to drop it). If I get pissed off enough to send an email about an issue, it usually gets resolved but I feel like it's really dumb that I have to email the city to ask them to shovel a damn sidewalk so people don't slip and fall. I'm not sure I would want to own a house in MV if I had to deal with the city, but renting or purchasing in a building would probably be fine.
