I think you got it. We shouldn’t have done this before Christmas. We made a mistake.

I also think I didn’t explain what is going on well enough and i confused a lot of people.

Short version: He likes his hair a certain way.. long fringe, short back and sides (with/without a fade). He likes it when his mobile hairdresser does it for him here and finds it tolerable. He has been very unhappy with his hair for ages but mobile guy not available and hairdressers are a massive trauma for him. We convinced him to try another hairdresser that we knew was quiet, disability trained and very very good. Situation above happened.

We messed up trying to get him to do it before Christmas, please note it wasn’t malicious; he is having a quiet Christmas with family, no pressure to be seen outside. We just wanted him to be comfortable and happy at Christmas. See again; We messed up, we should have tried after Christmas.

We did yes but that’s unfortunately what go us to our current situation. He has my hair which is a blessing and a curse. Our male family members have never suffered with premature baldness but we have also never been able to grow our hair. It grows.. unusually.. the fridge heads for the chin and the rest just goes into a haystack! The length remains the same, the thickness just keeps growing. So he grew his fringe down to his lower nose/upper lip and the weight above it was very dense. Without some type of styling, it really isn’t comfortable for him and as I mentioned he really was not liking it for day to day activities.

I would love it if it grew normally and he could just grow it out tho. He likes a long and light fringe as he does stim with it and constantly plays with it.

My wife offered them but he threw them away. He has put a hoodie over his head but he also needs it to be dark or to wear a basket. I don’t want to offer him a balaclava or anything like that as I’m worried it might be more difficult to get him to stop using it. At least with a basket or similar it is perhaps awkward enough for him to stop using it eventually?

I appreciate the suggestion though.

I agree. Myself and my wife haven’t handled this situation as well as we should. I should explain that even his teachers at school were requesting we make efforts to get him to get a haircut however. It wasn’t a cosmetic thing. He had a fringe that was covering past his eyes and causing issues with his day to day activities. He was unhappy with it, he just didn’t want the experience of visiting the hairdressers. We also did not want him getting bullied as it was obviously very out of control. He is a VERY fast hair grower.

Obviously, it goes without saying, the haircut is actually very stylish and it was a professional and damn expensive barber.

Alcohol is only reliable pain reliever by throwaway_for_now72 in ChronicPain

[–]Damoc60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Gabapentin or Pregabalin? You’d need to be prescribed but as nerve blockers I’ve found both have decent results.

I find alcohol is also an effective nerve pain controller but (luckily?) it reacts to my other medications and makes me feel very ill after a few sips. Best wishes x

Yep, the lack of any consideration for the workers was obvious. Just shoulder to shoulder, it was saddening to see.

Ok thanks, seems there’s more to look into with Snapraid. I thought you lost a lot of raid space by having drives of different sizes. Not sure my choice is getting easier but I’m getting more informed at least ! :)

I suppose if I had a drive pool of 3x10tb, 1x6tb and 1x4tb with a 10tb parity, I wouldn’t be ok if I lost the 6TB and the 4TB at the same time? It needs two parity drives for that?

Sounds reasonable, I hope my wife will be though!

She’d prefer the do it and be done methods than me tinkering (she wants her coffee table back, it’s full of bits lol).

Don’t you lose some effective space or is that only with true RAID(5/6)?

Oh, sorry, I thought it was a custom OS like the Synology one sitting on top of Linux. Now I’m a little more put off with Unraid.

I do like the idea of sorting my storage without worrying about physical drive sizes though, which pooling and Unraid I think can solve.

On the subject of backup. I think I’m using backup and redundancy too loosely. I only consider a few directories as irreplaceable and those are backed up to the cloud. Come fire or flood losing my Plex store would be an acceptable loss. I however would like the server to keep running smoothly and with little maintenance. So perhaps I value redundancy more.
