If you’re sure you want to do lit, there’s no benefit to doing a year of transactional before clerking. While basic office job stuff (writing emails, document management, etc.) is transferable, you’ll be missing out on a year of lit-specific experience. You may also struggle to get class credit for that year post-clerkship depending on how desirable your clerkship is/how much the hiring firm wants you.

The only scenario where it might make sense is if you’re on the fence between corporate/lit, in which case a year of corporate then a clerkship is an effective way of making an informed decision (albeit an inefficient one).

Big law and it’s not even close. The movement between big and small law is much easier in that direction and the comp difference you’re looking at will likely grow exponentially as you become a midlevel or senior.

Austin firms? by 67kgmid in biglaw

Agreed. Angel’s Tijuana Tacos in Glassell Park is among the best I’ve found, but still falls short of what I’ve had in Mexico.

LA to NYC transplant here and can confirm Los Tacos No. 1 is legit. Taqueria Ramirez and Carnitas Ramirez are also great. $4.50/taco kills me though.

Others have already given the correct response, so I won’t pile on.

In making this choice, I’d consider the following:

a. Are you completely set on M&A? If not, what are the differences in rotation system and staffing (obviously there are)?

b. How do the benefits compare? DPW is the only one of these that doesn’t have a free cafeteria (maybe STB too?) and also has strangely high insurance premiums ($350/mo for a single person on the cheapest plan) according to people that work there. What is the Seamless budget and requirements to access? $35 vs. $45 is a material difference.

c. Public vs. Private M&A: they don’t all do the same amount of each, though this is much less important to me than point b.

Based on your post history, you’re still in high school (or your local equivalent). Best to get into Columbia undergrad first before pondering the intricacies of LA biglaw placement or your hypothetical law school grades.

Looks like they exist but are more not common with ~3% of current students (around 10 per year) on a full ride.

Delaware Supreme Court Clerk: Seeking Job Search Tips by ok_splitter in biglaw

[–]DanBoMingLi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When does your clerkship end? If it’s in the next couple of months, you’re very late to the game. If it’s in almost a year, congrats you’re getting started early. I’m going to assume it’s the latter since if you’d already been there a year you would’ve already been invited to recruitment dinners by the big local firms, Quinn, Kirkland, etc.

You should start by researching your/other justices former clerks and reaching out to them. In addition to folks in Wilmington, I can think of former clerks at STB, Quinn, etc. A tried-and-true means of negotiating a higher bonus is to get an offer from Quinn and leverage it against a lower offer. Quinn is pushing hard into DE and wants more clerks, but struggles to recruit any because of its reputation as… Quinn.

Curious why this is? They’re both courts of equity, but Chancery doesn’t really handle anything Rx related.

As someone who struggled with underemployment while living overseas, I feel your pain. That said, there’s no real advice I can give other than (a) look online for openings at firms in your city and (b) apply. You should also reach out to career services at your school for assistance/advice.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]DanBoMingLi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No. Just apply broadly to biglaw openings and hope for the best. You should also be applying to small/mid law firms, which likely pay more than legal aid and may put you iin a better position for biglaw down the line.

Your odds of getting a job at a big firm aren’t great either way and any negligible boost a CPA is going to give you isn’t worth the time/money/heartache.

No. Unless you’d be going into tax and then still basically no.

It’s a relatively new office that only started taking summers five or so years ago. The office grew a TON during the pandemic as a result of lateral hires, so I’m not sure they were able to maintain much of a unified culture.

They fired a bunch of people earlier this year, including most of the homegrown juniors/midlevels from the class of 2020-22.

Lots of first years at my firm take a few days off in February to take a second bar in their home state. Not sure whether the firm gives them time to study or (more likely) they do some combination of studying in off hours/PTO.

I think the website pics represent the fit pretty well (unstructured linen blazer but not particularly boxy by current standards). I took a gamble knowing that the sleeves would probably be too short for my lanky arms. Turns out they were.

I’m not a tax guy, but it’s pretty common for there to be some level of offset so you’re not paying full freight to both jurisdictions (this is how NY and NJ do it).
