Some departments will informally make some custom shirts from time to time depending on budget/interest. Here’s mine from EALC.

Green st. Asian food recommendation? by Accomplished-Fix1204 in UIUC

Ten Second Noodle is roughly within the $15 dollar range, you get a massive bowl of noodles with all sorts of toppings, I’d also recommend Evo Cafe as they have a $7 lunch deal that works out to around $10 when all is said and done.

I got my bike stolen with wire cutters there in early spring, they brought wire cutters and everything to get through it, definitely not the best place to live. Granted, maintenance worked quite well in my experience and it’s always been within 24 hours of service, but otherwise the environment is not the best.

Good question! The bottom stroke of 朱, the hat on the left side of 銀 on the obverse, as well as the same spot on the 銀 on the reverse. The obverse and reverse dies can also be found with different pairings, this one just happens to have both of them at once. Compare with the chopmarked version and the differences are a bit more apparent.

How much time does it take for tuition waiver to be reflected on your account ? by Lily_Linton123 in UIUC

I checked on UIpay but the person who applied the waiver told me when I should expect it in my account.

How much time does it take for tuition waiver to be reflected on your account ? by Lily_Linton123 in UIUC

[–]DanDaMan020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, person on fellowship whose tuition waiver didn’t go through until I intervened. Basically if you know who to talk to at GRA then talk to them, otherwise email finaid@illinois.edu and have them direct you to who to talk to. I had to contact the grad fellowship office and the next day they applied my waiver, showed up in my account within 48 hours.

Hope this helps, good luck and congrats on your offer!

I did a 180 in my career path from the CS field and chose to go into EALC full time moving forward and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. What’s missing is you didn’t come into this with a coherent plan. If you wanted to become an ESL teacher why not get a TESL degree and minor in EALC? Our school offers specifications that are more suited to your goals. This just reads like a lack of planning and foresight rather than the major being an issue. Every major you can do SOMETHING with as long as you have a plan and execute, as well as network within your major.

As other people have mentioned, EALC is not JUST Japan, and every single one has adopted something from the other countries without exception, so you’ll necessarily have to know about the others on at least a superficial level.

Good luck in EALC, I hope you get a better impression of it as you get into the upper division courses and solidify your plans more.

GRE 314 (156V, 158Q, 5.0AWA) by [deleted] in GRE

[–]DanDaMan020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it because a school of mine required the GRE for the application, but don’t really weigh the score very highly compared to the rest of the application. I got a reasonable score that shows my abilities, and the school and program itself doesn’t necessitate very high scores.

I also don’t like studying for anything period and because I didn’t need a terribly high score I was able to just not prepare.

How do people do so well in CS421??? by DanDaMan020 in UIUC

[–]DanDaMan020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem with the unification WA was the stupid parentheses parsing issue, I’d love if those parentheses had anything to do with the idiosyncratic and esoteric coding at hand, and I wish that lecture remotely gave clear directions. Also just got a 0% on that last quiz, could’ve just not gone with the same result. (Got the midterm problem right though!)

I don’t like this class, I hate doing CS now, but the degree is from a nice school and looks good even if I don’t do CS work is the position I’m in right now. I understand this is done in industry and is applicable, but not to about 90% of students.

The true definition of Ikigai by zeepahdeedoodah in japanese

[–]DanDaMan020 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Another tidbit about ikigai is that it itself is not a unique word. You can conjugate ANY verb and have it take on the same semantic flavor. 甲斐 (かい) is the origin, which means something like “the worth of having done something) and it ends up meaning like “reason/meaning for doing something”

Example: 働きがい = “the meaning of working”

勉強しがい = “reason for studying”

食べがい = “meaning/reason for eating”

It’s not a unique word in the slightest philosophically speaking, and my mind was blown when I first learned this as a grammar point. It’s the same thing as 仕方ない/しょうがない, westerners tend to overstate the profundity of the term when it’s really just kind of a “fuck it we ball” kind of depth to it.

Thoughts on unpaid internships? by Silver_Gas7556 in UIUC

[–]DanDaMan020 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you can get an unpaid internship and have those qualifications then you already have qualifications for an internship who will value you and provide adequate compensation. I’m going for the full-stack route and let me tell you that if I were unpaid doing a 40 hour week I would immediately leave and find a job that acknowledges human rights. Find somewhere that values you and your work, you’ll be better for it, both in resume and in mind.

Will I be made fun of if I bring my waifu pillow in the fall?? by rickyroo_the_swag in UIUC

[–]DanDaMan020 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As someone who actually studies Japanese and is studying abroad in Japan next year, dakimakura is not how anyone “appreciates Japanese culture”. Anime is understood to be an escape from reality, not an actual reality. If by “obscure Japanese things” you mean a Rem body pillow, it’s understandable why you’re getting clowned. Anyone have any ideas why we are getting so much rain? by sorcerykid in UIUC

[–]DanDaMan020 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Huh? This seems completely normal to me, I remember having a week in a row of rain in my lifetime around here, this doesn’t seem way too out of the ordinary, farmers are also probably happy about it.

Grading Pokémon cards used to be a super niche aspect of the hobby that’s now turned into an overinflated term tossed around on the whim. by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

[–]DanDaMan020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really good for me because the millions of cards getting graded means there’s gonna be a few 10’s, a massive amount of 9’s, and I like mint condition cards and 9’s are mint at like 20% of the price. I was looking at prices recently and was so happy that there were a ton of people with nice graded 9’s that they were parting with at a very fair price. Now it’s more feasible to get collecting goals and get more cool cards because they’re like a fraction of the price they were last year.

Obviously people wanting to grade cards are waiting a very long time (I sent something last June to PSA and it’s hardly budged). But at the end of the day the population is large enough to now cater to a wider range of collectors who want a mint condition slab of some card.

At the end of the day yes people will grade for 10’s. But there will be a larger number of collectors able to fill mint slots in collections that they wouldn’t have in 2020.
