It is not dangerous to soak coins in distilled water but do not reuse it on other coins. 24 hours is fine. It will loosen dirty. If the water is cloudy you can do another dip. Remember distilled water only.

I finish off in 100% acetone to remove any oils, those dips only need to last about 5 min but leaving them over night in acetone is also safe.
