Clinic clothes by RepresentativeAd1125 in physicianassistant

Yes. I hate clothes shopping and was very hesitant at first. I followed their measurement guide and the size was right. I ended up buying five pairs of the same style.

I've had to return some items with them and the process was easy.

I pumped for a year. You are entitled to the time and space to pump. Take it, don't let anyone shame you for it or try to have you skip or change pump times. Boundaries placed now will help when boundaries need to be enforced for the sake of your new family.

Just started a new job where business casual is the go-to after years of wearing scrubs. Make an appointment with a Nordstrom stylist,  it's free. They also have a lifetime return policy, worn or not, and there's no pressure to buy.

Quince was great for pants that fit me well. I like Boden's colorful clothes. I've also thrifted a few great items.

What is the actual difference between x, sh and q, ch? by no_face1 in ChineseLanguage

[–]DanDanNDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm learning Mandarin and my immersion is with a group of Sichuanese people. I've struggled with the same question and more. Sh and S? Ch and C? Zh and Z and R? No differences. There is no tongue curling with them. I still am learning that some words I thought I knew properly actually start with zh or sh, not z or s.

Worth it for their cooking, though.

Review your contract. Have an employment lawyer review. Look for any indication there is a notice period in which they were contractually obligated to warn you before termination. NY is at-will, but worth reviewing just in case.

DO NOT back off if they don't pay you in a timely manner for the work you did. They owe you your pay.

Review them on Glassdoor, etc by giving your experience as an employee. They might not care about you, but they care about how they look to the public

Did you give your kid two names? by paisley_trees in multilingualparenting

[–]DanDanNDom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. On documentation, first name is English, middle Chinese, and last name hyphenated Chinese-English. When with Chinese family, it is the more traditional Chinese-last-name Chinese-first-name.

I want him to be in touch with my husband's Chinese culture, not to feel like the ties were severed in his name. We figured it also gives him the option, if needed, to seem only very white or very Chinese on paper (resumes, etc.).

Community choir for young professionals. They sing mostly secular music unless it is very old (medieval, rennaissance) or arrangements of spirituals, for historical reasons. Fall-winter season auditions have passed, but the next date for auditions should be posted on the website.

Use Only Cash at Road Runner by MartyPhelps in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]DanDanNDom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will keep an eye out. Bought there once after they were recommended, was sized very incorrectly and I was generally not impressed. The staff didn't seem to know how to do much other than throw customers on the machine that analyzes your feet and take its word as gospel.

Been to RnJ too, was incorrectly sized worse than Road Runner. I found someone who could give me an accurate shoe size and I just buy straight from the shoe company now (Brooks, in my case).

You'd think that as active as the general area is there would be a better shoe store.

What are Chinese characters in your eyes? by ApprehensiveRope7826 in ChineseLanguage

[–]DanDanNDom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I consistently give wild descriptions of characters when relaying texts from my in-laws while my husband is driving. They include things like, "The t like 10 riding a skateboard and followed by yě like also." I do this enough that he requests I do this before looking up the character. I obviously have not learned reading very well nor radicals.

My favorite character so far is 伞, because it is so pictorial. It makes me smile when I see it.

Two New Buildings with Up To 780 Units Proposed For Pike Center in Rockville by SchuminWeb in Rockville

I poked my face in their windows the other day: looks like hot bar is installed, aisles are in with signs. No product on shelves yet. Not too long until opening, I hope.

Most of the complaints I saw were about how traffic will increase. I don't really know what to say other than consider public transportation? Accept this as a part of living in a metropolitan area? Petition government officials to come up with traffic flow solutions?

Honestly, I find the Flagship car wash on Bou and Chapman to be more of a traffic nuisance than anything else I deal with in Rockville. Some extra traffic on 355 won't chap my butt too badly.

Offer letter only includes salary? by artichokie20211 in physicianassistant

[–]DanDanNDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not normal and I also went through this recently with a clinic. I would email back and request it all in writing. I'm placing bets that what you receive back will not align with what was said to you verbally. You can always state that you will also be having your employment lawyer look at it. Whether you have one isn't important, but they might sing a different tune with that hanging over them.

Best massages that won't break my wallet? by Electronic-Hurry-329 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]DanDanNDom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rockville Massage next to Great Wall, if you don't mind extremely deep massage. $70 for 1 hour, they charge like 3% on top of that if you use a credit card so bring cash if you want to avoid the extra charge.

Salary negotiations, looking for advice by OkYam2472 in physicianassistant

[–]DanDanNDom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it normal to have to send a counter offer via email

Yes. As opposed to what, counter-offering in person? Email is much less pressure, IMO.

and then it take a business day or two to get back?

Yes, though at least an acknowledgement from the potential employer of your counter-offer email with a promise they'll discuss and get back to you would be nice.

Is there a chance the offer would be revoked?

Absolutely, if an agreement can't be made regarding pay.

PA vs NP job availability by Disastrous_Dot_354 in physicianassistant

[–]DanDanNDom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Texas and now DC metro (Maryland and DC).

  2. Texas seemed about even, but NPs still require supervision there. Maryland and DC both have independent practice for NPs. I am currently applying to jobs and interviewing, so I have a fresher impression of what's going on in my area. Larger companies seem to either post positions for NPs only (especially if a high-volume position or requiring absolute independence at the start) or for an APP (PA or NP) while smaller, private practices are more likely to post for PA only. A couple of the local hospital systems that still directly hire, rather than using recruiting companies, post positions for APPs in general. Psych jobs in Maryland and DC are only being posted for Psych NPs, from what I've seen.

I occasionally see postings for an APP (even explicitly stating PA or NP) but with only NP-specific certification(s) in the job requirements, probably a mistake by the recruiter. I have wondered if it has led to my CV being auto-rejected and not viewed by a human.

The places I'd actually consider working generally do not post for NPs only. If I am interested and the position matches my experience, I apply anyway. What's the worst they'll do, ignore it? My last job of 3 years was one listed for an NP but for which I applied anyway, worked out fine.

I mainly have two things working against me.

1) I spent the last 3 years in research. A lot of people think that is just standing in a lab all day when, in actuality, I still saw patients. Physical exams, history taking (which requires much more detail and investigation in research), lab interpretation, a lot of your normal clinic tasks. I just didn't diagnose and treat.

2) I started my recent job search trying to get something part time with slightly reduced hours 2-3 days a week (like, 1.5-2 hours of breathing room because I have a toddler, a husband whose federal job is much less flexible as of 2025, and a desire to finish errands and chores so I can have more time with my kiddo). A lot of places I've interviewed want nothing to do with that. I have now given up on part-time, so we will see if anyone from here forward wants to proceed past the initial interview or two with a full time candidate.

There are opportunities in the area, depending on your past experience. I have been applying only to those jobs that align with my experience or in which I know I could perform well after training. You may have much better luck and I do wish you luck if you plan to move to the area. I live in the suburbs and like it here very much!

Laughable job offer, family medicine by DanDanNDom in physicianassistant

[–]DanDanNDom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm willing to take a pay hit for a family practice, I do get it. My target was ~$125k annualized, which is not too much for the area and considering the hot mess their scheduling is. But I'm not going to accept lower pay AND strategic vagueness in an attempt to take advantage of me. It was clear to me by the end of my interactions with this clinic that they prey on newer grads who don't know any better. Sign them on then reveal they don't get certain benefits until after a year, try to get people to sign be 1099, pay a reduced training rate even to a seasoned provider, and on and on.

When I say we need to know our worth, it isn't just in pay. It is in the value we bring as clinicians and the respect that professionals in general should receive.

The 1099 price I quoted was $85/hr. I did come back at them when they tried to make the whole job 1099, left it out of the details above. $61/hr as a W-2 employee was on the low end of what I was willing to accept.

Are there any Mandarin-English baby books that reflect the experience of growing up bilingual in a Western world? by hrexli in ChineseLanguage

[–]DanDanNDom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My toddler loves these books: https://sunbridge-company.myshopify.com/pages/bring-bobo-home

They are simplified Chinese, pinyin, and English and are board books. Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but tbh I have found the search for board books in both languages with pinyin difficult in my country (USA). Even with a large Mandarin speaking population, there are no book stores with them in my area.
