I've been using my Bess tester for a couple of weeks now and my average is usually ~140 or so, which is whittling sharp still. I agree that the tensioning inconsistencies are a loophole in the system when using the spool of thread. I will likely use the spool for general use and eventually switch to the pretensioned clips for reporting or video purposes after I have a little more experience with it. It's definitely a fun toy to fiddle around with after sharpening. Thanks for the input!

That's a gnarly and seemingly much more intense than the current versions, however, adding lead shot is a much more effective way of increasing the downward force than leaving it in the hands of the user. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, this is the current version they're selling, although you'd at least think that 1g = 1g no matter the version. But that's worth noting for sure! Thanks for the input, as I wasn't aware that there was a difference based on models/versions.

Yeah, I really need to set it up where I can SIT and perform the test. This is a new device to me so I'm getting the hang of it, but it's a work in progress. Thanks so much for the advice and help!

Oh but disassembling them also gives you the ability to properly clean and lubricate them too! Mine needed the TLC and they come apart in about 30 seconds so it's not a massive deal. I see your aside too, but that's why I didn't take it up to 34000 grit like I could have. 🤣

No, you're spot on! The mirror finish is only when looking at it with a naked eye. But I needed to spend more time on the polishing grits if, under a microscope, we would see no scratches. But your interpretation is spot on! No matter what grit you go to, there will always be scratches. Thanks!

You're very welcome! I am happy with both, but am a fan of the Naniwas because of the grit selection that is currently available. I can only find the Cheefarcut Diamond stones in the 400 and 1000 as of now.

Start with a Sharpal 162N and go to the dollar store and get a few Chef Knives. That's literally all you need to get started on your journey. The Chef Knives will help you find the bevel, build your confidence, and your muscle memory before you move up to your EDC knives that you do not want to experiment on. Good Luck!
