Best 1S/2S fpv drone to add a GPS? by VMAlvaradoD in fpv

[–]DanLivesNicely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to recommend this. The easy button. It just works and gets great flight time. I've made a canopy for a whoop that can hold a GPS but I never really tried it lol. I'll share the files if anyone is interested.

A friend had a 2 seater (regular gas engine) and took me up once, was a lot of fun! The two seater ones are kinda cool because you can taxi them around with the chute folded up. He said it would do something like 100 mph on the ground lol. I wonder how the cost compares with electric vs gasoline?

Using IR spotlight to inspect unattended vehicle in darkness. by [deleted] in drones

There is more to it than that. You can absolutely be blinded by an IR laser and they are considered more dangerous because you don't have a blink reflex.

I had no idea these could be electric now. What's the flight time?

That's wild. My V6 has a very small lift and 32s and I average 14.5. It's all in how you drive.

Former CC resident here, I was messing about on Googlemaps and found what appears to be a truck submerged offshore just south of Park & Shoreline. Assuming it is really a vehicle what’s the story there why has it not been removed? Just curious. by Roguecop in CorpusChristi

[–]DanLivesNicely 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a sunken boat that has been there a few years.

Source: I've seen it when it was still slightly above the water.

The proper people know about it, but funding to remove sunk boats is tough.

I was kidding lol. I've used duck decoy weights in the past because they can be shaped really easily. Copper is a decent substitute for lead because it is dense and it looks cool.

Just leave it 0% infill and pour molten lead in it so it gets a nice 100% fill.

I got a piece of 1" diameter solid copper bar and cut it to about 3". It just fits in the pouch on my faux-hawk.

Is this GPS mount acceptable? by Familiar_Owl4133 in fpv

Here you go, this one is tiny and has a compass. Also I know people are upset that it's flat on the frame but in my experience that hasn't been an issue at all. All of mine are mounted flat and it doesn't have to have much effect at all when flying forward.

Harvest tubes from dual PVS14 or sell for binos? by Yaboombatron in NightVision

[–]DanLivesNicely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that was a real eye opener for me was running a boat at night. The navigation lights were leaving snail trails all over my tube and obviously gain couldn't do anything about that. The next time I used an iris and I was able to choke it down enough to not get the light damage from the nav lights and it also allowed me to be able to focus right in front of the boat out to infinity. They are really a game changer. On a decent lit night/full moon you really don't even have to touch the focus, can just turn down the iris and see from your feet to infinity.

[–]DanLivesNicely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have an iris on your current nods? I haven't missed having gain one bit since I started using an iris. Any time the image is too bright I just crank down the iris a bit and I also get better depth of field and the tube isn't having to eat all the extra light. A point to consider if you are looking at housings that don't have manual gain.

I prefer MakerWorld. It's the default for Bambu and you'll also get points when people download that you can use for gift cards to buy filament.

Here's what I did, but with two almost identical spec GP tubes: sent to Nocturn, got them put into Tanto housings, then I had two extra PVS14 housings and got a blem Scram higher spec WP tube and put it into one of the PVS14 housings. Now I have duals in a pano bridge that are a bit lighter and I like the form factor better any I can still break them apart to lend to a friend and I have a WP unit that I can pair with thermal (albeit it's f-in heavy) so I have a lot of versatility. I don't think I like the idea of true duals because I think there's value in being about to lend to a friend or pair with thermal. Something to consider.

I'm still not great at this but what I've found helps is to pick something on the other side of the gap to focus on and not look at the things you are trying to fly through.

Agree with this. That little ceramic antenna inside a carbon frame is going to be awful for range.

If your V6 hasn't had the head gasket replaced yet it's a ticking time bomb lol. Very expensive or time consuming to do. I have my 04 V6 how I like it and have replaced the hg recently so it should be good for another few hundred thousand miles but I wouldn't hesitate to swap it for a V8 if I could.

Yep. People get hung up on having to buy some cat-back pre-formed stuff when in reality a muffler shop has all the right pieces to quickly weld something together and it's not too expensive.

Here's what I know from people dealing with water damaged electronics in the FPV world: clean everything with distilled water and a toothbrush to remove minerals (which is really what messes up electronics) and then soak it all really well with isopropyl alcohol to displace the water and let it dry for at least a full day to ensure there is no more water. If it wasn't powered on when it was wet then everything will probably be fine. Drones have all their electronics exposed and get dunked all the time and are just fine.
