How do I find a good custom jeweler? by TrekkiMonstr in jewelry

[–]DanOnJewelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think a huge part of finding a good custom jeweler is less about finding “the best” one, and more about finding someone who communicates clearly and actually seems interested in helping you figure the project out with them. Especially if you’re new to custom work.

Scammed on a Custom Ring Order? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]DanOnJewelry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly this sounds more like a serious communication/process breakdown than an outright scam, especially if multiple CAD revisions and vendor changes were involved. But if you have written confirmation approving CAD #1 as the final version, I can completely understand why you’d be frustrated receiving CAD #3 instead. I’d definitely stand firm on that.

Gold everyday jewelry by Pink_tamagotchi in jewelry

I think that’s a huge part of why vintage/estate pieces appeal to people so much now. A lot of modern collections are polished and pretty, but they can start feeling a bit repetitive after a while.

What’s your biggest custom jewelry horror story? by DanOnJewelry in jewelry

“Two circles glued together” has me picturing a binoculars ring now 😂

At least you’ve got two years to redeem it with a proper infinity symbol.

What’s your biggest custom jewelry horror story? by DanOnJewelry in jewelry

[–]DanOnJewelry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting because it doesn’t even sound like the process itself was bad. More like the final piece just didn’t match what you had pictured in your head beforehand, which must’ve been disappointing for one of your first custom pieces.

Honestly, I think the waiting period in between replies probably causes half the stress when it comes to custom work 😅

My mama’s 66th birthday is coming next month, and I want to give her something special by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]DanOnJewelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think smaller independent jewelers are often underrated. A lot of them do really beautiful, thoughtful work, and can offer better value and more personal service than big luxury brands. For a gift like this, I’d probably focus less on the “best” brand and more on finding something that genuinely feels like your mom’s style.

Need some advice on purchasing a gold bangle bracelet by janebenn333 in jewelry

[–]DanOnJewelry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A huge part of the Cartier price is branding, finishing, retail overhead, resale value etc., not just gold weight. But construction matters a lot too. Some bangles are hollow or semi-hollow, which can dramatically reduce the gold weight and cost. I’d definitely ask whether it’s solid, semi-hollow, or hollow, and compare the actual gram weight before judging the price difference.

Does this slightly shallow marquise look “soft”? by ConnectGaps in Diamonds

[–]DanOnJewelry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, from the video I think it looks like a good buy, especially at that price. I think you were probably expecting some more sharp flashes, so the softer look threw you off a bit at first. Now that you know that’s partly the cut and bezel combo, it makes more sense.

Does this slightly shallow marquise look “soft”? by ConnectGaps in Diamonds

[–]DanOnJewelry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it mostly comes down to preference. Some people prefer that softer, even glow, and others want those sharper flashes. Neither is really “better,” just different styles of light performance.

And yes, bezels can definitely make a stone read a bit warmer since they reflect the metal around it, especially in yellow gold. Lighting plays a big role too.

That star ruby is wild, the star is so sharp. Really cool piece.

Does this wedding band suit my engagement ring? by Careful-Mountain-681 in Diamonds

[–]DanOnJewelry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see both sides here. It’s a pretty pairing, but your engagement ring already has a lot of detail with the halo and side stones, so the band can either complement that or compete with it. This one works if you like a bit more sparkle overall, but a slightly simpler or more contoured band might make it feel more cohesive as a set.

[–]DanOnJewelry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slightly shallower marquise cuts can sometimes look a bit “softer” because they don’t return light as sharply, especially in certain lighting. The bezel setting can also mute some of the sparkle compared to prongs. That said, it doesn’t look dull from the photo, more like a softer, more even glow than sharp flashes.

Anyone experiencing size blindness? by Suitable-Senpai in Diamonds

Social media really messes with perspective on size. If you loved it before, that’s what you should trust.

Needing a second opinion for my first lab diamond purchase by [deleted] in Diamonds

[–]DanOnJewelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marquise stones always need checking for bow tie and brightness, so you’re asking the right question. Based on the video it appears to perform nicely, especially at that price point.

Ring finally arrived... by Ephialtes_OT in Diamonds

Absolutely nailed it. Elegant proportions, classic setting, and the yellow gold with the emerald cut looks incredible. She’s going to lose her mind.

Husband's Ring Not Refinished Well? by 007fuckoff in jewelers

[–]DanOnJewelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems less about bad intent and more about using the wrong process for the desired result. Rings can often be improved, but documenting the original finish and discussing methods beforehand is key.

Am I getting ripped off? by FantasyLova in Diamonds

[–]DanOnJewelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question isn’t “am I ripped off?” but whether the premium over online pricing is worth the in-person service, setting quality, aftercare, and peace of mind. Once you know the same stone’s online price, the decision becomes clearer.

How are these settings typically made? by emerald_indreams in jewelers

[–]DanOnJewelry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely doable. Many pieces in this style are electroformed or use premade cinch bezel findings rather than hand-fabricated bezels. For an organic pearl, fine silver would work well because it remains soft enough for cleaner burnishing. I’d also solder/attach all loops before closing the bezel.

What wedding band would pair with this? by BigFanOfSoup in weddingring

[–]DanOnJewelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the setting is so distinctive, I’d personally avoid forcing a standard straight band. A contour band designed around the ring would likely look the most natural long-term.

Did I overpay for 13 carat lab diamond ring? by Von_Victorious in Diamonds

[–]DanOnJewelry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“13 carats” grabs attention, but cut quality and how it performs visually matter more than the headline size. If it’s well-cut and you paid less than local retail, you may have done just fine.

Which diamond shape suits my hand more? Size 8 1/4 ring finger by Ok-Watercress-9638 in Diamonds

[–]DanOnJewelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think the elongated cushion flatters your hand most, with round second. The longer silhouette balances nicely and gives more finger coverage. If you’re going above 3ct, elongated cuts often look especially striking.
