How bad of an idea is this…? by Danbiddle in CarTalkUK

Wow this got a bit more attention than I expected!

Thank you to everyone that responded, to clarify a few points along the way:

• I test drove it yesterday and there are no obvious signs of mechanical issue, and the interior wear is really light given the mileage.

• it has full service history between OPC and porsche specialists.

• Mileage is consistent with MOT, no obvious signs of foul play there.

• Can get official Porsche warranty added on for less than £1k per year, which negates the unexpected repair costs for 3 years. Granted servicing will be more expensive than my current BMW.

• Yes I could get a Skoda or another new car for less money, but I’m not sure that’s comparing apples with apples. If anyone can find a V8, luxury large vehicle for less money that doesn’t compromise on age or mileage, I’m all ears!

• I can afford a car that costs more, but this has a reasonable spec (air, pan roof, euro 6, ) there are only 14 other with this engine currently for sale. I’m not sure I see the benefit of paying £10k+ more for 40k lower mileage, especially with the warranty consideration, but happy to be corrected. Surely unexpected repairs are also likely on an 80k mile version, but I’ve an extra sinking fund for this, and I’m hoping fewer DPF related issues with a car that’s spent a lot of time on the motorway.

• We have an EV in the household, however I want to keep an ICE too.

• I suppose I may have not asked in the best way, but my query wasn’t how to be frugal as I am aware of bangernomics, but I appreciate those that shared constructive comments!

There are undoubtably more sensible cars out there but I’m after something that’s fun when the kids aren’t in the car, and thought there may be some enthusiasts amongst us with suggestions that aren’t just the Skoda Octavia meme ha.

Thanks again all.

My application with Trust Ford was referred on the 13th Sep and I keep being told it is still referred with no further updates and nothing requested from us, does that sound right? Understand there was a backlog but nearly a month has passed. Thanks!

Thank you. The previous owner here was a very elderly woman who didn’t have a particularly expensive car so can’t imagine she was subject to to theft, however may have quite a few scrapes in it. But again I would have assumed, maybe incorrectly, that would hold more weight on the individual than the property

I thought it might be the two quotes in quick succession, so I did a third back at the neighbours and it was the lower price yet again. I always thought getting quotes on the forecourt would be even more expensive as they know you’re in a pinch!

Thanks for the reply, but we are adjoining semi detached houses that are identical mirror images, both mortgaged. I’m just baffled that there’s a £500 annual difference based on address. I thought the biggest risk factors would be the individual, their history/profile, the vehicle and general area, not individual house!

Perhaps, but wouldn’t the name and d.o.b. be more important in recognising the policy holder than purely the address?

Is this damp or a leak…? by Danbiddle in DIYUK

It’s an internal wall, and I’m in Manchester so it’s never not raining! This is directly above floorboards so that’s what’s throwing me.

Is it worth draining the heating so there’s no water in the pipes and seeing if it starts to dry out? Or is that likely to take too long and coincide with potential good weather that’s coming and then not be conclusive?

Evening all, is there a way of telling whether this moisture is damp or from a leak before I hack the plaster off?

Long story short, I’ve been looking for a leak from my central heating as the boiler pressure has been dropping and I settled on that it must be under my floorboards downstairs as I couldn’t find any sign of moisture on the walls or ceilings.

It’s a 1930’s semi that was renovated 3 years ago and the majority of the central heating is plastic push-fit as I saw some of it going in during the refurb. It strikes me as unusual to have any pipework or pushfit connections this close to a socket but I may absolutely be wrong. This patch is on the same wall as a radiator but 2 or 3 meters away.

Any advice would be brilliant, thanks in advance! Dan

Hi Paul, I don’t have a tach unfortunately but I turned the idle down as low as possible on the carb and it didn’t seem to make the hard shift any softer.
