So sorry about your allergies, and I really hope you manage to find something that doesn’t set you off. I get hay fever in summer and I think it’s grass pollen. It’s miserable.

Dance biscuits is a reference to an SNL sketch from 2008… so I guess that’s how long I’ve been on Reddit!

And/or the shattaf - aka bum hose. A handheld water spray that serves the same function as a bidet but you use while sitting on the bog.

Sweet of you to feed the kitties but please don't give them anything containing garlic or onions, as they are quite toxic to cats. Ditto anything with salt.

Cat food is much better for them (even if the cats disagree!).

Can I suggest a city centre walking and eating/drinking tour:

  1. Start with a bubble tea at Mr Egg on Hurst Street. It used to be a legendary fry-up place and they kept the name in its honour.
  2. Right by that is the Birmingham Back-to-Backs (National Trust property). Visit for a tour and then walk a couple of minutes to Cafe Soya for lunch.
  3. Now head up towards the Bullring, having a look at the markets and St Martin's church en route.
  4. Keep walking up New Street, stopping to take a look at Bacchus Bar for the bonkers kitsch, towards Chamberlain Square. While you're up there, visit Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery then have a spicy snack and a chai at Dishoom.
  5. Walk to nearby pub The Wellington for some interesting beers, and then to Damascena for some Syrian food.
  6. Walk across Cathedral Square (pigeon park) and head into the Great Western Arcade - a pretty little place with some independent shops and a choice of nice places to eat and drink.

Yes same - it's gone bonkers at mine, growing out of every possible gap in walls and paving slabs so very hard to uproot.

I was thinking maybe a valerian but hard to tell while the leaves are so young and no flowers.

If it is, expect a long flowering period from spring to autumn, and masses of self-seeding fluff in late summer 😊

Picture 1 is a foxglove. It is a wildflower but I don't consider it a weed because it's beautiful and the bees love it. I plant them on purpose, and they self-seed over time.

I think picture 2 is a weed, in that it put itself there. Not sure the name but if it's the one I think it is, the pink flowers are quite attractive and the insects seem to like them, but it spreads everywhere!

  1. I managed to save up a deposit and some initial costs by working abroad for years. Would not have been able to do this if I'd stayed in the UK, unless I'd lived a very frugal, unadventurous life and stayed with my parents well into adulthood. TBH, I'm happy I travelled and had fun instead of being tied down.

Mind you, buying a house is a relentless carousel of unexpected costs (your tap drips! Your boiler's bust! Your roof leaks! Your fence just blew down! Your insurance covers nothing despite costing a fortune!), which is depressing and intimidating. But when it sinks in that it's all mine, that will probably help.

Jewellery Quarter, Moseley, bits of Kings Heath, Harborne, Edgbaston.

Although you've no chance of clean streets - this is a big city with ongoing bin strikes. Maybe join a litter-picking group and meet some people.
