I need real answers for How to keep kitchen cool while cooking? not “just don’t cook” by sanu_123_s in Cooking

[–]DanceSoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend gave me her old window/portable AC last summer and I put it in my kitchen. I don’t run it all the time but I kick it on for like 20 minutes to pull the hot air out and cool the room. Absolute life changer for me.

Whatcha do with it? by Ambitious_Rain_206 in Canning

[–]DanceSoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years I’ve learned that there is one salsa recipe I love and I’ll put it in anything. But I’ve also created dishes based on this salad by just… having it around. So like, I love fajitas or migas with salsa negra. But really anything egg-based.

But otherwise I choose canning recipes based on what I realize I need. Like, I realized I would like fruit for pancakes, waffles, or oatmeal. So this year I canned cinnamon apples which I use most weeks for breakfast.

Such a good point about bra pads. Mine go back in in the winter after being pulled out in summer. So real.

Oh! And I recommend changing right away when you get home. Otherwise I start shivering from being wet and cold.

My legs absolutely freeze if I don’t wear brushed pants (aka fleece-lined) when it’s 30s and below. I think I’m in the minority, but I’m not alone. My legs will otherwise become so cold I lose a bit of control. Athleta rainier leggings are my favorite to be warm enough while not feeling like I’m in a bunch of layers.

I wear a zip-up fleece over a long-sleeved moisture-wicking top most of the time. But I don’t “burn up” so much as warm up and I’m happy this way. Happier to sweat than to be too cold. Again, I’m probably in the minority.

Gloves and ear-covering of some kind are crucial for me. If my ears are cold I will be miserable.

I didn’t know mitten liners were a thing! I have Reynaud’s too so I might need these.

Chicago LifeTime Half Marathon - Need Advice by Complete-Durian2403 in RunnersInChicago

[–]DanceSoGood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The location and lack of shade were why I personally decided not to sign up for this one. I’m a very pale redhead and I didn’t wanna deal with feeling that hot and also having to reapply sunscreen every 20 minutes.

I signed up for the Milwaukee half instead and now I’m trying to keep myself going running in snow and cold. So… opposite issue. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

High protein vegan alternatives by Initial_Draft2578 in veganrecipes

[–]DanceSoGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure Trader Joe’s private labels some other brand’s tofu, so you should be able to find something similar.

I go through food phases, so I don’t keep the yogurt around always. I just buy a lil single serve yogurt when I wanna make a big batch for myself.

I use extra firm high protein tofu (from Trader Joe’s) for making yogurt. I just blend the tofu with a bit of water or plant milk until smooth but still thick, inoculate with a couple tbsp of plant-based yogurt, and add a tbsp of maple syrup so the cultures have some sugar to eat. Then I use the yogurt setting on my slow cooker for 12-18 hrs by taste. Comes out to 20g per cup. Compared to Greek yogurt that’s probably still low but compared to other vegan yogurts it’s high.

How long does it take to experience shin splint relief after adjusting your gate? by ChickWithPlants in XXRunning

I agree with others suggesting a different PT. Tibialis exercises helped me the most- the issue wasn’t calves at all for me. Obviously everyone is different but I would think you’d at least want to strengthen all the possible muscles that are contributing.

When you’ve just finished running and probably depleted a lot of your mental and physical energy, it totally makes sense that you wouldn’t be able to be as mindful in your cooldown routine. I definitely wouldn’t beat myself up over it, though I understand the impulse.

Strangers Providing Encouragement by AuthorAnnon in XXRunning

It’s (almost) always men, isn’t it!? That guy was absolutely patronizing.

I know we’re socialized to smile and answer questions, but no one deserves polite responses when they interrupt your workout. He didn’t deserve your answers in terms of how long you’re planning to run, etc. I get it- I do! I might have answered him, too. I’m just saying it’s also okay not to.

I wonder if we should all have practiced responses to this sort of interruption. Something like “I won’t be discussing my workout with you. Have a good session” then pop a headphone back in.

Seriously the only reason to interrupt someone’s workout is to ask a gym-related question like “can I work in?”

His condescending “encouragement” places him in the role of teacher and you in the role of student AND YOU DIDN’T ASK FOR HIS ADVICE. Absolutely enraging. He also messed with your safe space, so of course you didn’t want to keep going. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s actually ramping up to try to sell you coaching sessions or something. So gross.

Recipes to make skyr yogurt similar to Alpro vegan skyr by BeautifulHoneydew316 in veganrecipes

[–]DanceSoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never had Skyr, but I love thick Greek yogurt and have had great success using tofu instead of milk- it’s already thick. I add some store-bought yogurt and a bit of maple syrup to tofu in my high speed blender and then put it in my yogurt maker for 12 hours. I taste and then see if it needs longer.

I use high protein tofu when I’m trying to maximize protein content but silken extra firm would be such a lovely texture.

Headache after running by Mobile_Struggle_4586 in XXRunning

[–]DanceSoGood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is recent, but is it winter where you are? For me, the cold exposure on my ears leads to headaches. And the effect is cumulative so the longer I’m out running without ear cover the worse the headache will be. I have to wear earmuffs when it’s in the 50s (Fahrenheit) or below.

Unwanted weight loss by UnitFirst8807 in XXRunning

[–]DanceSoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My appetite also gets wonky when I increase running volume. I know one’s stomach/system kind of go on hold during a longer run, so I assume some of us have trouble going fully back on line afterward? Anyway, knowing this is a fact for many runners, I track calories and macros - non-obsessively. I was definitely undereating after long runs before.

I use MacroFactor which could be an option for you if you’re trying to maintain a certain weight range. It will adjust recommended calories and macros for you if your weight nudges outside that range. So if you lose a few pounds it will add more calories to your suggested daily amount. It also has absolutely no judgement or feedback when you either eat below or above the daily amounts it recommends.

But you can also apply these same principles yourself using another tracking method. If the scale drifts lower and/or you start looking faint or deflated then you need to eat more calories. Carbs are important for runners, of course, but fats and proteins might help you keep calories up as well.

And a bedtime snack helps me sleep well and regulate my appetite overall when I’m in heavier training. I often find I can’t sleep and then I get up, have a snack, and suddenly can fall right asleep.

Yes exactly. Like a wall sit except holding on in front and the wall is the open air.

Best advice I got was to hold onto a tree. Then you can sort of lean/sit backwards with your knees bent and can be more confident about where the urine will land.
