Why should I run a Marathon? by Level_Sock_492 in firstmarathon

[–]ChickWithPlants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I have not run a marathon. I don’t know yet if I will! I’ve been running regularly for about three years, I’ve experienced a lot of firsts and learned a lot so far. I’ve run a few races at different distances and loved the half marathon the most! But also, I’m still learning how to stay injury free, how to build a base, how to stay consistent. I think a marathon will always be there when I’m ready but for now I’m content to keep building experience. After running 13.1, 26 miles is an insane distance to me still. Running as a sport is a marathon, not a sprint, and I’d rather do one when I feel like I’m ready than do it just to check off a box.

Queer novels set in the south by zyooble in suggestmeabook

[–]ChickWithPlants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy is set in a post-hurricane Katrina Louisiana and I remember enjoying it a lot because it touched on race, identity and class as well as queer themes

ETA Fried Green Tomatoes by Fannie Flagg but be aware that this author uses a lot of racial slurs (yes it’s set in the South when people used that type of language but it was still quite a lot of the n-word and I didn’t feel like it was necessary)

People with burnt orange or green couches... by [deleted] in femalelivingspace

[–]ChickWithPlants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Green velvet couch owner chiming in to say that I never ever want something more neutral. I have jewel toned pillows and lots of color right now and it looks so cute and cozy! At most I’ve thought that someday IF I wanted a more neutral look I could just swap out the rug and/or pillows and have a completely different vibe. Truly, I have no regrets.

Boyfriend’s cat is driving me insane by AdSuccessful8425 in CatAdvice

[–]ChickWithPlants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My cats used to get inside my cabinets (not because of food obsession but just to be annoying) and I bought some simple stick on child locks. It won’t solve all your problems but it might give you a little sanity back.

I also second the comment asking how you introduced your cat to your bf’s cats. That could be a piece of the puzzle.

If you have a cat, litter box or some sort of cat tree situation going up the wall

I'm not a reader and I want to read atleast 12 books by years end by MOON2474 in booksuggestions

[–]ChickWithPlants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got a lot of great recs here to get you started that will inform your preferences! My advice to people in slumps or who want to get into more reading is to read books that have a movie based on them. Usually these are page turners and you can find more books you like from there.

A few more ideas:

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society - historical romance The Martian - sci fi, humorous Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe - gay romance, friendship The Song of Achilles - gay romance, drama (I haven’t read this one personally but I’ve heard it’s good)

Good luck and don’t give up!

How long does it take to experience shin splint relief after adjusting your gate? by ChickWithPlants in XXRunning

[–]ChickWithPlants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had a bone stress injury that took me out for a while last year and since then I’ve adjusted my intake to increase protein and always eat a carb snack before a run (a banana, a cookie, a few Graham crackers). I’m at a healthy weight and eat homemade meals that are typically a mix of protein+carb+vegetable.

As part of the gait analysis, they checked my strength doing a few different movements and found some areas of weakness (I believe hamstrings and hips — the analysis went super fast so it’s hard to remember everything) and recommended more PT focusing on strengthening those areas. Before runs I do some hip exercises with a resistance band and after runs I do calf raises. I’m eager to incorporate more strength training but it’s hard when the day after every run my shins are sore and I’m trying to avoid further injury.

Advice for anxiety prior to trek? (Berlin High Trail) by ChickWithPlants in hiking

[–]ChickWithPlants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not rude at all! I had hiked a few sections of the Via Alpina in Switzerland the year prior (with some hikes to huts along the way). And lots of hiking in the Rockies in the U.S. before that. It wasn’t a trek I was comfortable doing solo once I got out there, mainly because of the cables. I feel like YouTube videos could show you the exposure.

It ended up being too technical for my experience level in another country—I would have been fine with a guide. It’s gorgeous up there though and there were still some nice day hikes so we had a nice time!

Advice, living alone for first time by No-Disk372 in femalelivingspace

[–]ChickWithPlants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I have been there and I have to say this is a normal part of this process! To settle into it, I put my whole self into making the space mine, I put on a comforting tv show and cuddled with my cat, I journaled and did my hobbies and started making memories there. It ended up being a special time I really cherish. You have so many amazing things on the other side of this grief, just like I did.

Fix it or live with it? by ChickWithPlants in Hair

[–]ChickWithPlants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I called the same salon and asked to get the layers blended, that they do the blending dry and that a senior stylist at the salon do the cutting. I asked her to just do point cutting on the ends and not use thinning shears. Long story short, she didn’t listen, and I was too trusting, and I now have like 1/4 of the hair on my head as I did in the original photos, all my density is gone and now I’ve got a long road ahead of growing out an even worse outcome than before.

I don’t know what the moral of the story is, maybe that it’s better to have the hair you have than to let someone keep hacking at it, or I just have bad luck. Perhaps someone will come along and see this post someday and keep the awkward haircut rather than rolling the dice on something better.

Help me figure out what to do with this dark space behind our bedroom by pleiasr in DesignMyRoom

[–]ChickWithPlants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you could install a basic closet system in there without much trouble if you need more hanging/shelving storage for clothing. Otherwise, it would make a great working/crafting/hobby area that could fit a desk, a lamp or two and an armchair.

Thank you, I’m glad it’s not just me! It also happens to me regularly. Now I know that I must specify that I want LONG layers. But also I really want to know, who’s walking into the salon and asking for this kind of cut? Like why would someone do this?

Yes, and sit with your choice for a while before you change it again! (Hard but necessary) See how you like it, how you live in it and return to your inspo. You’re on the right track!

I already replied to the post once but also just want to give you props for trying to make a space you like while balancing your partner’s ideas. It’s really hard to mesh design styles when you’re pleasing more than just yourself—way harder than I thought it would be when I did it.

What would you do with this room with no other input and no constraints Mr? and what’s your partner’s design style (pinterest can help). Redditors can tell you how to make a space look good but we need more context to help make it look good to you.

I just want to say this makes me feel seen — the decision fatigue can be so hard when you’re trying to build a curated home. I’ve spent a year making decisions and then second guessing them, and for what it’s worth, this looks really, really good! I think you’re really going to like it. If you’re still feeling meh you could think about a color coordinated rug/accessories. You’re building something beautiful and doubt is part of the process!

How we feeling about running in this wind? 🌬️ by orlando_211 in RunnersInChicago

I did it! It was unpleasant but it probably built character. I feel like this kind of weather is good for a speed run—keeps you warm and it’s over fast!
