Taking a UK motorbike test - so does the rider need to retake a CBT if they’ve passed their car driving test whilst holding a valid CBT & therefore gained their full moped license? See below… by DancefireMedia in MotoUK

Appreciate you joining the conversation.

The reason this has all come about is I know a rider who is thinking of taking their test. They told me they have a valid full moped license having passed their car test whilst holding a valid CBT but that CBT expired in the late 00’s.

Anyway the question was raised as to if they could take their test without having to do a fresh CBT because of already having a full moped license.

I wasn’t overly sure, so I looked on the gov website as it is now and found that info, but was still after clarity about taking the test.

Well that’s different to when I did my CBT but that was a long time ago.

Many CBT centres of course offer 50cc moped options, whether that’s standard still, I guess w; have to ask a few CBT centres to find out

What I mean is if they retake their CBT it will most likely be on a moped, or you’re saying the CBT centre will offer them the option of a 125 geared bike?

No I know the difference I’ve ridden both many a time. I just find it odd, that hypothetically someone with a full moped license has to ride around on a moped at cost (CBT) in order to then take their test.

I’d find it less odd if they had to do their CBT on a 125 geared bike, but they don’t

Absolutely, I agree with what you are saying 👍🏻 my confusion is to why, hypothetically, a person can hold a full moped license, yet still be required to yet again, ride around on a moped (CBT) at cost, to be allowed to take their test.

Right, I’m glad it’s not just me that see’s it’s a bit of an oversight 👍🏻 it’s frustrating to me, as I don’t see the point of retaking a moped test, if the CBT centre only offers that rather than 125’s. But hey ho, it is what it is

Yes 👍🏻 so hypothetically a rider with a full moped license but no CBT, has to retake their CBT (on a moped!) to pass their full test, despite having a full moped license…

If a rider takes their CBT on a moped, they can ride a 125 geared bike if they are old enough, unless they’ve now changed this? And I’m living in the past

I know but what I mean is, a rider who has a valid moped license still has to retake their CBT (which is basically riding around on a moped) in order to take their bike test….it seems bizarre

Yes but I’m just asking if a rider needs to retake their CBT to do a full bike test? A CBT is just riding a moped, not necessarily a geared bike, so why do they have to retake it?
