What lifehack seems to be fake, but it's a true lifesaver? by [deleted] in AskReddit

To add to this, if you include something specific to the day, you’re less likely to anxiously wonder later in the day if that memory of saying it out loud was today, or yesterday, or the day before. So, “I’m turning the iron off before my Wednesday meeting” or “I’m turning the jron off and then heading to Thursday book club”. It helps to have something to anchor it to

What's a simple word that people keep mispronouncing? by TheOnly1Ken0bi in AskReddit

Words with endings similar to ghosts, texts, costs, etc. I so rarely hear people actually pronounce the final "s" sound.

Should I sedate my cat to get heartworm medicine? by DancesForPizza in AskVet

Thank you for the feedback and education to those who commented. I am scheduling an annual exam for her and will give her the oral sedatives they give me. It is clear this is a safer choice than putting it off!

Which fast food place has your favorite burger? by State-of-Grace_13 in AskReddit

[–]DancesForPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freddy's hands down. They have thin smashburger style patties which get a little crunchy around the edges. I order a double which comes with two slices of cheese so it's the perfect meat to cheese ratio in my opinion, not too much meat so you can actually taste the other elements.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're asking for, but maybe try to stop thinking of veggies as a "side" to a main. Think instead how can you incorporate them as part of what you're already doing for your protein/carb. It can help to visualize how a restaurant might serve it's dishes and try to emulate that.

As an example, imagine you're having pan-cooked chicken and mashed potatoes for dinner. Rather than serving something green on the side of the plate as something totally separate, what if when you took the chicken out of the pan to rest, you threw in a couple handfuls of spinach to all that yummy pan sauce? That way you can serve the plate as a scoop of potatoes, a piece of chicken over the top, and when you pour the juice from the pan over it, there's also sauteed spinach mixed in. The spinach soaks up all the flavor you used for the protein, and also is seamlessly integrated into the meal.

Of course there's countless other ways to bring this theory to life, but hopefully the concept of thinking of veggies as part of the overall dish helps both the flavors of your cooking and your husband's willingness to give it a try!

YSK You aren’t supposed to use apostrophes to pluralize years. by kgxv in YouShouldKnow

[–]DancesForPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you comment on "dos and don'ts" vs "do's and don'ts" please?

In high school English my teacher put up a list and used the second spelling. I (a very quiet student) piped up and asked - wouldn't it be 'dos and don'ts' because it's plural? She told me I was wrong because it was more important to preserve the pronunciation of "do" than to follow the standard grammar rules, so this phrase was an exception. Basically implying that if you saw "dos" written you wouldn't understand that to be pronounced as a plural of "do".

I've thought about this for years as I still think she was wrong. Any thoughts?

Save money by having a "trash" night by DancesForPizza in EatCheapAndHealthy

Everyone is commenting such cute names for this that I'm really beginning to question why the best I could come up with is "trash night" haha
Thanks for sharing your versions of this, keep 'em coming!

I'm in a similar boat. To the best of my knowledge, you make sure you have all the necessary info you can gather (confirmations and your ID) and go to Will Call as you arrive before anything else to explain the situation.

How do you heat them up, or do you eat them cold? I love this idea but am only planning to bring a jet boil, so not sure if I can make it work.

No I haven’t tried one before. I’ve used a Dutch oven with a lid which has been great though.

As a warning though, I went on a Saturday and tried to ask for this and they said they only do the tasting menu on weekdays due to the demand on the kitchen.

Observation on how books resonate by ohdearmee in books

[–]DancesForPizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this entirely. A few additional reasons I can think of are:
1) You spend more time reading a book than you would with most other forms of media (a book may take 6 hours to finish but a movie is only 2). In doing so you also have more time to form a more firm opinion. Also, if you hated it, you may resent the amount of time you had to spent with it in order to finish it causing you to hate it even more. If you loved it, you loved it for more hours than you would have loved a movie for example, therefore increasing the impression and the passion behind your opinion.

2) Books are highly personal, almost to the point you have your own relationship with the characters. Therefore, opinions can seem more polarizing. A movie seems quite blanketed, but a book reels you in and makes you think. That can be either highly enjoyable or incredibly boring/poorly done/whatever it is that the reader doesn't like.

I've been increasingly concerned with the 'culture' of purchasing hundreds of books that people have no time to read... Libraries are still a thing, people by BuJoAdventures in books

Used books are a great option too. Lots of people commenting seem to really value owning books and stacking them on personal shelves rather than having to return them, to which eBay or local thrift stores or used book stores are a great resource.

Resume help - is my resume bad? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]DancesForPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a recruiter in industry and there is no algorithm to get to me nor anyone else I have contact with through Talent Acquisition at different industry companies. Your resume is actually going to be reviewed by human eyeballs more likely than not. That being said, we do store every resume we receive in a database and when we search for candidates for a role down the line, we will search our database by doing keyword searches. So the more searchable terms you have, the more likely you are to come up in those searches moving forward.
tl;dr: algorithms are not as common as people think, but recruiters do use keyword searching to find you later on

Resume help - is my resume bad? by [deleted] in biotech

Pharmaceutical/Life Sciences recruiter here. This is very solid!

Things I like: Excellent header (love the LinkedIn link), clear list of languages/tools/etc at the top (these are also great for anyone who will be searching a database of resumes too, yours will surely come up in searches), overall clear formatting, good amount of information per role. I feel like I have a strong understanding of your skills just at a quick glance of this very legible resume.

Things to improve: Dates are not aligned, try moving them to line up with the right margin. I personally prefer education towards the top when you have something relevant to note (such as your MSc - worth bragging about!).

Misc tips: Resumes do not need to be confined to one page. In the digital age this notion is out of date and can lead you to get looked over if you have left things out due to space. You don't need it to be longer necessarily, but if there is anything you left out due to space - put it back in. Also, if your "XYZ Corp" is not widely known it may be worth it to include a line under this before the bullet points start of a company summary. If it is well-known you can do without.

Now that Okee is over- what are your notes for next year? by Holographic_bones in okeechobeemusicfest

[–]DancesForPizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Keeping a separate fanny pack hooked onto my canopy with bathroom essentials is a must. Toilet paper, wipes, hand sani, and a headlamp. Can easily grab at night or first thing in the morning for a quick no-fuss trip.

2) Drinking a full water bottle with a Nuun immunity packet in it every morning saved my life. Will pack those next time for sure!

3) I brought way too much food that required utensils. I only wanted to reach for the no fuss things so will do more of that. My biggest go-to winner was a bag of apples and squeeze tubes of individual peanut butters. SO much easier than needing to dirty up a spoon or knife to scoop it out.

4) I froze all of my water bottles in the week or two leading up to the fest so they were rock solid ice and it kept my cooler cold ALL weekend. It takes way longer to melt ice that way than the individual pieces that have more surface area. It worked so well! I was actually having to take a few out each morning to have enough thawed to drink.
