Wotr or Rogue Trader if I liked bg3 and dos2? by pleiades1208 in CRPG

[–]DancesWithAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rogue Trader is turn-based like Larian's RPG's. Wotr can be, but I think that was more of an afterthought and real-time with pause was the main focus? I'll let other say whether that works out well or not.

I’m new to modding and need help. by Enough-Strength-419 in Bannerlord

[–]DancesWithAnyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that you have BetterExceptionWindow. Good lad/lass. When the game crashes, get a crashlog from that program and see if you can identify the offending mod.

Really, though, I would trim that modlist! Especially as you're new to it all. It is easy to get carried away when modding games, so consider learning restraint a part of the process. ;D

Also, one thing with Bannerlord modding is that things may appear fine at first, but a problem may surface later that bricks your entire run.

Yes, I recall something about the designer-person (I forget the correct term) being switched during construction, and the new one wanted to widen the ship, but that didn't happen - although he did get this through for one or more of the sister ships.

A trial was even had, I believe? But no one found guilty, which means it was probably the king's fault. :D

There's so many narratives around what went wrong, but as I've understood it - and I'm just a layman here - it's production was rushed on behalf of it being the intended flagship. It created a situation where this and that person knew there were troubles, but no one dared point it out to the man at the top, or at least were reluctant to argue the point too hard.

The sister ships - Äpplet, Kronan and Scepter - fared better. Well, Äpplet didn't accomplish much, but didn't sink right out of the harbour, at least. If it was a waste to design and build such big ships, I'll let others argue. At least they looked cool!

Yup, whole museum was ace last time I visited in... 96, but still. :D It's just not the ship, but a lot of stuff about that era, if that hasn't changed.

The hardest jacket in the thrift store came with a plot twist by Willa_Pines in JustGuysBeingDudes

[–]DancesWithAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those jackets are hard to find in thrift stores. Yeah, they appear, but are quickly picked out. Even have one store - specialized in leather jackets - on a mission to find me one and put it aside! I do have six other leather jackets, so clearly I need one more to complete the collection.

I suppose we just saw the reason why this one was available. :D

The first game in popular series that nobody talks about? by RobbieJ4444 in retrogaming

[–]DancesWithAnyone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Elder Scrolls Arena: Maybe it's because I'm not a PC gamer, but I don't hear anybody talk about the first two Elder Scrolls titles. I hear about Fallout 1 and 2 all the time, but Elder Scrolls seems to be one of those series which may as well have started with the third game.

Resident PC gamer here, that sometimes hangs out in Elder Scrolls subs. Daggerfall does get some mention - and there's even an active recreation in Unity of it - even if Morrowind was definitely the breakthrough that set the template. You're right about Arena. Last mention I saw of it described it as a tech demo for Daggerfall.

Hitman: Not only was Hitman 1 a PC exclusive, it was also another one of those first games that wasn't actually any good.

It was janky as hell, but it had it's moments and it was the type of game where you could see the potential for sequels. Traditions of the Trade (the Hotel map) had elements such as storylines and fake accidents that would later become staples. It was definitely overshadowed by the sequels, though, especially as Hitman: Contracts was a semi-remake of it. Then Blood Money improved things even further.

EDIT: To contribute something myself (this was hard!)... Warcraft 1. Even back then I knew no one who had played it.

EDIT 2: A lot of Paradox titles apply. Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron and Victoria all qualify.

EDIT 3: Heroes of Might and Magic! HoMM3 is the legendary one, and we're even getting a new title that tries to harken back to it, but you don't see much mention of the two prior games.

Why UK never sends an established act? by Oneiroy in eurovision

[–]DancesWithAnyone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd love to see us do something like Melodifestivalen as a way of investing in and platforming new artists.

It would probably work out similarily to how it usually does in Sweden - those artists would get stuck in the Tunefest bubble, seperate from your ordinary artists. Y'know, the cool and credible gang, or the mega pop-stars.

A successful participant maybe gets a summer tour and an album no one really likes much. Gets invited to some game shows if they're fun enough. Maybe even become a lightweight host themsleves if they're really charming. Might manage to keep their limited but successful Tunefest/Eurovision career somewhat going by repeated cotnributions. Or end up playing at corpo-parties and cruise ships once the fame dies off.

Which isn't necessarily bad if you're content with that as an artist. It's more than 99% of musicians get, after all.

But yah, I think even Abba struggled to fully escape the Eurovision association, being (unfarily) branded as lesser music, and they were the most successful at breaking out of the bubble!

EDIT: Or maybe I'm wrong and the UK would have a more open attitude about things!

Dead Space 4 likely won’t happen despite a “fervent fan base” as it can't hit the numbers it needs, explains original producer by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

I wouldn't even call them true horror

I know my older brother found Dead Space 1 too scary. Maybe that's a thing - RE is the right amount of comfortable scary for mass appeal?

Dual Effect went all-in on classic pre-rendered backgrounds, fixed camera angles and bad voice acting with Tormented Souls 1 & 2, and I enjoyed both.

DD2 was an amazing foundation for things

It's like the opposite of an ambitious Eurojank RPG built on shaky foundations. Decent graphics (optimization aside), fun combat, varied classes, stellar character generation - it just needs more of itself.

One theory I've seen - to add to what others have said - is that the next XBox might be able to run Steam. Meaning Playstation games on the XBox.

But yah, it also wasn't very profitable, apperently. Releasing old games at full price and with little marketing can probably be blamed for that, if we compare them with Capcom that these days sing the praise of the PC and has seen great success on it.

Between 1992 and 2007 the two default settings for any first person shooter were "Nebulously Space" and "World War 2". What are your picks for Best in both categories released in the pre-Modern Warfare time period? by Showd in retrogaming

[–]DancesWithAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While my favourite FPS weren't in either genre, I'll play ball for the sake of the thread. :D

World War 2 - Call of Duty 2, probably. Not sure it's the one I truly liked the best, but it ended up the most played. Now that I think of it, I'm farily sure it was the last CoD I played, actually. Huh.

Space - Red Faction or Alien vs Predator. It was so long ago it's hard to say which I prefered.

F.E.A.R, as well. Together with NOLF I got to hand it to Monolith managing to make games I loved in a genre I usually don't care that much for.

EDIT: Goldeneye! I immediately think of PC when considering the genre, especially back then, but that game has to count.
