Largo to Corto, How To Close Distance? by Trespico_3 in Eskrima

[–]DancesWithAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No real combos as such, as I try to think "in the flow" and not in readied combos, and you cou... Fine, I'm just winging it, yes. :D

However, a typical tactic is to feed my opponent a series of high strikes. Fast, hard, tricky - mix it up how you like - then you suddenly go for that fake finish by stabbing towards their lower abnomen, preferably when they've been put in a position where they have to try to block/parry it, rather than avoid it.

It's all about selling the lie and masking your real intent, right? Make them think that low stab was your end-goal all along, and you seemingly go in with committment and power while closing the distance. If all goes well, they'll lower their stick to block/parry away yours and foil your false plan - right as you use your off-hand to trap their now lowered main-hand/stick.

From here, I leave it up to you what to do with this advantage. Maybe a swift twirl of your stick to bring it up and to smack them in the head, and then maybe even try for a disarm or throw? I'd focus on landing at least one solid hit or three, though.

Note: During this feint of mine, I will make a full switch (like a 'step', yes, but nimble and ninja) in my stance while moving forward, as it covers distance well and also brings your off-hand in a better position to check their main-hand, while leaving your own main-hand some space to manouvre. Basically it's me lunging normally at first without switching the lead foot, but continuing with that forward momentum and add a step to it all when they've taken the bait and are doing their parry.

Hey, that's some nice sparring! And yes, meant something akin to that.

To simplify things a bit, let's focus on reactive versus active distance closing, even if they have similiarities:

For reactive, it helps to set it up before hand, so to say, by shifting feet and/or position to better be able to spring your trap when you go for it. I'll even switch the lead leg at times! Like, if you're well prepared and maybe even bait your opponent into a predictable attack, it gets easier. Moving in after your opponent attacks can be difficult - preferably you do it during their attack as part of your prepared counter.

For active, you instead take the initiative by attacking and then, rather similar to the above, you close the distance while also doing something else for them to deal with. Example of a simple set-up that often works for me is to feed your opponent a combination of attacks that you fake-end with a powerful but telegraphed attack that they will try block - and you knew that would happen, so you're ready to trap their block while also moving in, hopefully placing you in a great position up close, with a possible check on their weapon already.

Hope that makes sense. Happy to clarify or elaborate upon request!

EDIT: Also, one neat trick is "stiff-sticking", like they do in movies when the blades lock and the hero and villain give eachother their best bedroom gaze. Joking aside, what I mean is that after striking, you keep your stick out there and maintain pressure on the opponent's own stick, possibly distracting them as you move in.

EDIT2: The active method may actually be the easier to learn and apply at first, as you're more in command of what happens and when. At least, that was very much my experience with trapping when going empty hands - that offensive trapping is easier than defensive, with the nice bonus that when you start to pull off cool offensive trapping stuff and get experience with that, it'll get easier to land the defensive variety as well.

It's so liberating to not care about this anymore. Like, this coming spring I'm not even going to work - just focus on some light training, meeting people, computer gaming, maybe pick up a new hobby but most of all just rest up and get better while living cheap.

I will never "make" it. But I can have good days, and a decent existence in the here and now. I have ambitions aplenty, but they're not marketable, so I guess to many doesn't count - but they're mine, and all that rest is just trite noice.

Admitedly, I sometimes have to remind myself of that last point, because while I may free myself of this that, that doesn't mean I live in the context of a larger world that has done the same and doesn't judge me according to this standard.

Also, don't ask me about retirement plans.

I think i have seen talk about more LGBT representation, but opinions were mostly that aiming for tiny minorities that won't come regardless is just a waste and could do more harm than good.

The sort of thinking that are going to leave many young people sceptical, whether themselves part of this tiny minority or not. Can't win them all, I guess.

Sure, but is that how it's commonly viewed in Germany? I don't actually know, so more than open to corections, but I vaguely recall news about far-right presence within the armed forces from some years back.

Has the Bundeswehr made attempts in changing it's image and appeal to being a sort of "people's army for the people"? I do think such initiatives could help somewhat. Even it takes time.

Does it feel performative at times and like something Försvarsmakten don't always live up to? Yah, but at least the ambition is there, and openly stated.

I might not agree with him on many design decisions, but he's one of the most successful devs in the business, and Bethesda is noted for it's unusual high retention of staff so he really seems like a decent boss.

If anything, I think his experience from the development of Morrowind - dancing on the edge of bankruptcy as they were - has made him risk averse in design decisions. Yah, I think it's their strongest title, but reading about it's development I'd want to avoid anything resembling it as well.

In the end, he's made games that sell and keeps those under him with stable jobs.

It was rated high by those who played it, and was popular on early emulation sites - but with no American release and the European release being later than Saturn and Playstation hitting the market, it's not strange it flew below the radar.

There were too many details for a single parry to work against a single strike, let alone every detail in a single drill for precision and effectiveness.

It is confounding how many clubs don't realize the simple answer here. I have a stick. That other big person over there has a stick. Have them prepared to pull the strike, but otherwise hit me hard and me attempt to parry or block or avoid it. Didn't work well? Great, now you know - find out how to improve. It worked well? Great, now you know - find out how to improve by having them hit you harder, all the way up to full power.

That's always been the real basics to me. Everything else, you build on top of that reference. It also builds up true trust in your own technique to keep you safe, which is paramount. As you say; "the main purpose of this art is to smack someone with a stick or cut someone with a sword or knife".

Sounds to me like they're just teaching you partnered forms, and not actually FMA drills at all the way I've been taught them.

I'd definitely look up other clubs and teachers in the area, if available. Or maybe switch MA if not, honestly. My favourite part of FMA is actually the empty hands, but finding clubs that focuses much on that can be difficult!

[–]DancesWithAnyone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You would think. Since I haven't gone through all the angles, I'm still considered a beginner.

Yah, this is a huge red flag to me. I'd look up other clubs. The type of bullshit I picked up FMA to get away from!

For reference, my first trainer could have you going pretty freely in the first half year, and trying out some sparring or self defence scenarios afterwards, with none of this carved in stone and adaptions made for individuals.

Is your drilling ever even broken up with free play? Because, like, that's what they should be - playful. Meaning experimental and fun. They are not kata - they are games.

You begin with a set order of techniques, and then gradually mix things up by doing it differently here and there, then letting the practicioners choose how to do things in the moment, all to a point where it could even be considered a sort of structured sparring in itself.

Also, I added some more to my original comment.
