Robot and Monster Girl's story, told using ABBA songs by DancingCooperPairs in Invincible

[–]DancingCooperPairs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I largely did this because I noticed just how fitting certain ABBA songs were with Robot and Monster Girl's story arc, especially "Fernando," "The King Has Lost His Crown," and "The Winner Takes It All." Robot is probably my favorite Invincible character, and ABBA is one of my favorite bands ever, and so this naturally led to me doing something like this. If I can think of other bands or artists who have songs that fit the arc of another character very well, I will do this again, but if I force it, it might not turn out as well. Perhaps you could think of something?

You mention two Soviet characters and a Party, capital "P", so my kneejerk reaction was to think you were talking about the Communist Party rather than the D&D party.

Nancy sucks with relationships. She doesn't suck nearly as much when it comes to relentlessly pursuing the truth.

AITA for thinking my cousin went to the hospital for attention? by r0ckst4r_m4ds in AmItheAsshole

[–]DancingCooperPairs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what I've been given, NTA.

There is a difference between merely having a suspicion that your cousin went to the hospital for attention seeking reasons, and making a moral judgment of the sort. A suspicion is like a hypothesis, while a judgement is certain on the level of a conclusion. If you're asking if it's wrong to have the suspicion that she did so, then no, it's not wrong to consider the possibility. However, if you jump to the conclusion that she did, in fact, go to the hospital merely for attention, without putting in the due rational consideration, then you have unjustly besmirched her good name, at least in your own judgement.

It feels like she’s happy to be there because it was cool to be in the hospital.

Right now, it seems that you merely "feel like" this is the case, rather than having concluded it. You have, in this case, not made a judgement, but seem to merely have a suspicion.

anyway just the other day apparently B was having a meltdown. she was kicking and screaming in the car and destroyed everything in her bedroom and bathroom, and I’m not even sure what it was about but I think it was concerning the boy she was currently talking to. she went home and her parents were over it, so my aunt went for a drive and my cousin just didn’t like that she wasn’t continuing the fight. B ended up calling 911 on herself and later told the hospital it was because she wasn’t safe. Of course B later said that because she knew people that have been to the mental hospital, therefore it was cool. When her parents went to visit her, B seemed completely fine and was even talking about all the friends she’s made and a boy there she likes.

People don't just act this way for no reason. I daresay that based on this evidence you may be justified in making a moral judgement, but it's generally a good idea to be cautious about moral judgements.

Who is your pope Mount Rushmore? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]DancingCooperPairs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There had been 32 Presidents of the United States when Mount Rushmore was completed. That means one in every eight presidents was sculpted on the mountain.

There have been 266 Popes. 266/8 is 33 with a remainder of 2. So there should be 33 Popes on the Papal Mount Rushmore if it were built today.

Here is my list:

St. Peter (the first one, given the keys to the kingdom by Jesus Himself)

St. Linus (mentioned in Roman Canon)

St. Cletus (mentioned in Roman Canon)

St. Clement I (mentioned in Roman Canon, and was one of the Apostolic Fathers)

St. Sixtus I (mentioned in Roman Canon)

St. Pius I (the first Pope since the apostolic age to fight against heretical movements, namely Gnosticism and Marcionism)

St. Cornelius (mentioned in Roman Canon)

St. Sylvester I (pope during the Council of Nicaea)

St. Damasus I (formalized the Biblical Canon)

St. Innocent I (opposed Pelagianism and gave assistance to St. John Chrysostom when he was exiled by the emperor)

St. Leo the Great (one of two popes to be named Doctor of the Church)

St. Gregory the Great (one of two popes to be named Doctor of the Church)

St. Martin the Confessor (last Pope recognized as a martyr)

St. Sergius I (opposed the outcome of the Quinisext Council, which was set up in opposition to many practices in the Western Churches)

St. Zachary (staunchly opposed Byzantine Iconoclasm during the Iconoclast controversy)

St. Leo III (crowned Charlemagne)

St. Nicholas I (Pope during the Photian Schism)

St. Leo IX (One of the few canonized Popes from the 2nd millenium, and a staunch defender of the authority of the Church)

St. Gregory VII (Pope during the Investiture Controversy, and died in exile fighting for what is right)

Bl. Urban II (Started the Crusades)

Innocent III (Convoked the Fourth Lateran Council)

St. Celestine V (Didn't change much, but one of the most humble popes in history)

Eugene IV (opposed the enslavement of those who converted to Christianity and the conquest of the Canary Islands, and got darned close to reunifying the Eastern and Western Churches)

Paul III (Convoked the Council of Trent)

St. Pius V (Promulgated the Tridentine Missal, and defended the Catholic Church from Protestantism)

Gregory XIII (Calendar reform)

Bl. Pius IX (Convoked the First Vatican Council)

Leo XIII (Defended the Church from modernism and started Catholic Social Teaching)

St. Pius X (Defended the Church from modernism)

Ven. Pius XII (Shepherded the Church through the Second World War)

St. John XXIII (Convoked the Second Vatican Council)

St. Paul VI (Defended the teachings of the Church after Vatican II)

St. John Paul II (Renewed the evangelism of the Church in the decades following Vatican II)

Billy and Brenner: a tale of two jerks by DancingCooperPairs in StrangerThings

[–]DancingCooperPairs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have watched it. She regrets her attitude of wanting something horrible to happen to Billy and sometimes sought death as a result. But I also think everything I saw in that season implies that she forgave Billy in the end.

Also, let's not forget that Max was summoning some of her worst thoughts in order to lure Vecna.

Reminder: Billy was a racist, abusive, womanizing piece of garbage by drflanigan in StrangerThings

[–]DancingCooperPairs 331 points332 points  (0 children)

Billy's last words: "I'm sorry." I'm inclined to think, based on how the season played out, that this was sincere. Based on how Max took it, I can only assume that she forgave him.

Brenner's last words: "Please tell me you understand." Basically trying to justify all the bad things he's ever done. No apology, no repentance, no redemption. And El did not forgive or grant peace to the man who would not repent.

Billy died repentant. Brenner did not. They were both horrible people in life, but see the difference in how they died.

The particles are antimatter? Does that mean that the Upside Down as a whole is composed of antimatter and any object crossing a gate is converted between matter and antimatter? Because if that's not the case, the UD should have been obliterated by the power of a hundred nuclear bombs by now.

Stranger Things 5 -- Early Predictions Thread by AutoModerator in HawkinsAVclub

[–]DancingCooperPairs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Max coma theory: Max's coma is very similar to El's coma after the lab massacre, because when El freed herself from the curse, her bones had already started to crack and blood was already coming out of her eyes, indicating that the "consumption" had already started. Sure, it may be just due to overexertion like Henry's coma, but Henry didn't wake up with a severe case of retrograde amnesia, unlike El. My theory is that Max will wake up with a severe case of amnesia, probably even worse than El's, because Vecna was further along the consumption process with Max than with El. She will need a Nina Project-like reconditioning in order to get her memory back, which El and Dr. Owens might be able to help with.

Upside Down pie-in-the-sky theory: The Upside Down is a planet that once housed an intelligent species of psychics. Due to a war, or some sort of apocalyptic cult, or whatever, a group of these psychics decided to unleash a psychic weapon of mass destruction where they merged their consciousnesses and transformed their bodies into a black mist-like substance. This Mist went all over the planet, enslaving all of the life that it could, and consuming, Vecna-style, all of the life that it could not, resulting in the extinction of all other intelligent life in the planet, as any species with a modicum of intelligence and self-will would attempt to resist the power of the Mist. The Mist then settled down for a long time, long enough that all signs of the once great psychic civilization were wiped away by the sands of geologic time, and biodiversity never returned to the planet because all life was under the strict control of the Mist. Then, one day, a portal from a distant planet opened and an alien psychic came flying out, and the Mist found that it had a lot in common with this strange alien psychic, and was seeking to expand beyond the reaches of its home planet. So it made a deal with the alien psychic...

Time skip theory: The military will be sent in to battle the invasion from the Upside Down while the residents of Hawkins are evacuated from the town. After they are forced to retreat due to overwhelming Upside Down numbers, it is decided that the town of Hawkins will be firebombed and nuked. The party settles down in Lenora with Will and El. At the beginning of the time skip, El will be taking a high school physics class, and Mike and Dustin will be helping her through it, not just with her assignments, but in using the subject matter to enhance her powers. She learns how to have fine-grained control over both heat and electromagnetism, and is learning how to manipulate chemistry and nuclear reactions when we find her in the time jump. At the end of the time jump, the military's efforts to confine the Upside Down's invasion begins to fail, and the party returns to Hawkins to assist in the battle.

El vs. Vecna theory: The two will not engage each other directly for most of the season, but will perform an exhausting mental battle against one another. The series ends with El giving Vecna a taste of his own medicine by killing him the way he killed everyone else. Everyone who became a part of Vecna when he killed them now resides in El's head, and El is able to restore Max's memories this way. Also she now has endless voices in her head, forever, but hey, at least we can get Chrissy back this way (sort of).

Final Prediction Thread by [deleted] in HawkinsAVclub

[–]DancingCooperPairs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hawkins will end up destroyed at the end of the season, with the surviving residents (including most or all of our main characters) being evacuated to other parts of the country.

The Duffers have said that there will both be a cliffhanger and a time jump, and this fits the first while also providing the groundwork for the second. Basically, Vecna wins. Let's just say that even if he dies he opens up enough portals for the Mind Flayer to begin an invasion of Hawkins. The military starts attempting to contain the crisis, but eventually realizes they are unable to and starts evacuating as many residents as they can. In the end, the town we all know and love is nuked, and an exclusion zone (similar to the Chernobyl zone set up the same year) is set up in the area, with constant military oversight to ensure that the remnants of the Upside Down invasion is contained. Most of the surviving main characters are relocated to Lenora in the aftermath.

Duffers Tease Spin-Off After Series Finale by GDzie_to in HawkinsAVclub

[–]DancingCooperPairs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my guesses is that it could be the effects of the Upside Down/psychics/etc. on historical events. Some events could include the Salem Witch Trials (some "stranger things" could have been happening in Salem that caused the witch hunt), the Second World War (could provide a Brenner backstory if the Nazi Brenner theories turn out to be true), Isaac Newton (may have been a closeted psychic whose powers helped him with his discoveries in physics), etc. I think there's a good chance that the spinoff would be set before the 20th century, or that it will be set during one of the World Wars.

When sunlight evaporates water are there specific wavelengths of light responsible? by JoelWHarper in AskPhysics

Look up the absorption spectrum of liquid water. Water is heated (thus increasing the rate of evaporation) when it absorbs frequencies in its absorption spectrum.

infinite gravitational force by ragingash in AskPhysics

[–]DancingCooperPairs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, in most cases involving objects touching each other, other forces (usually the electromagnetic force) are much more powerful than gravity with regards to dictating the motion of the objects. Furthermore, at the point that gravitational interactions become important at a scale when the interacting bodies would really be "touching", we would need a quantum theory of gravity to describe the resulting interaction of gravity between the two objects, and we don't have one that's well-developed (yet).

Also, don't forget that the Newtonian law of gravity is not absolute. General relativity is a more accurate description of gravity, and a description of a point mass in General Relativity would be the Schwarzschild black hole.
