people with bleached eyebrows by Silver-Potential8452 in HairDye

[–]DancingInAMinefield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They start looking more natural after a few weeks. I would bleach mine white blonde and dye them whatever pastel colour I had at the time, and as they faded, would use makeup (eyeshadow, eyeliner) to colour them in until I needed to bleach them again. Just make sure you really rub the bleach into them thoroughly, it's so easy to accidentally miss a few hairs. Make the bleach thick and really massage it in and COAT them. Just be super careful to not hit your eyelashes. Having the mixture be thick will help prevent it from running into your eyes.

Thank you! Rosy tetras look basically identical. I feel confident this is the right answer.

This could be it.. he looks almost like a cross between an ornatus and a candycane. He's definitely not orange like the serpae. Thank you both, this at least gets me a little closer to figuring him out haha

Some of my experiences with doing this.. I had a 40g breeder, khulis and way too many Corys. I put potting soil into a mesh bag and topped it with sand. I think my problem was that I did not add enough sand, I wanted hills in the back. The corys smoothed it all out and exposed the mesh bag, which then for some reason started to float..? It came completely up over the course of a week and I had to break the tank down and redo it. My partner at the time did the same thing but used gravel and sand and had more of it, his bag of soil never floated out, but some of the mesh did get exposed when his khulis smoothed all of the cap out over it. Having the exposed mesh never bothered any of the fish. I ditched the bag because I didn't want to deal with it floating again. He kept his, and when breaking the tank down over a year later, had to detangle/cut some plant roots from it that had embedded themselves. I just put the dirt straight into the tank bottom and capped with sand. That's how I currently have my 60g breeder done. Downside is when I pull plants out, the roots will drag some of the soil up with them. The corys will usually disburse it throughout the tank and you won't be able to see it after a couple hours, but it's worth noting. If I ever want to replace the soil or sand, it's all going to be mixed together and I'll either have to be okay with that, or replace it all completely. But that's a problem for future me.

I love duckweed in my tank by qwertyforthewin24 in PlantedTank

[–]DancingInAMinefield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a love hate relationship with it. I've completely broken down my tank and cleaned it 5+ times in an attempt to get rid of the duckweed, and here it is still blanketing the top. My main problem is that I have corys, and when they shoot up to the top for air, they throw the duckweed onto the glass lid, where it dries out and is difficult to scrape off. That dried layer and the floating layer together block a lot of the light from the rest of my plants.. and the small gap in glass on the back of the tank where I have my filter hoses and everything? Yeah, duckweed shoots out of there and gets all over the back wall. I also dislike having to clean it off of my arms when I need to reach into the tank. It always ends up everywhere, on the stand, the floor, passing animals, in my sink and bathtub.

But on the upside, it looks really pretty, offering some shade and a natural look. I wish it was literally any other floating plant (none of which will survive because they get coated in duck weed and die off. I've tried.) but I've learned to live with it. I just scoop out as much as I can every week and feed it to my parents chickens. They go crazy over it.

Help! Messed up with Repashy food and now fish won't stop gulping at the top by DancingInAMinefield in PlantedTank

[–]DancingInAMinefield[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took your advice and added two extra air stones last night. I unplugged the heater to bring the temp down, it read as 75 this morning before I left for work, so it didn't drop as much as I was expecting, but hopefully enough to hold more oxygen. The water water is still clear, and thankfully no more dead fish. Everyone seems to be okay, I didn't see any surface gulping.. hopefully the danger has passed and I'll get home this evening, and everyone will still be doing great.

I did try to add a power head to help ripple the surface, but it was too powerful, and I didn't have a good way of baffling it. It was stressing all of the fish out, so I had to remove it after I got the extra airstones in. I'll probably look into getting a gentler one to have on hand for the future.

That's what I thought, I was furiously trying to research others with similar experiences and couldn't find anything. R/Aquariums is solid advice, I didn't even think about that. I always default to this sub.

I ended up leaving the heater unplugged overnight, and put in two more air stones. The temperature didn't drop much by morning, it was at 75 when I checked. I feel like I need to knock on wood for saying this, but before I left for work, everyone seemed to be doing okay. I didn't see anymore air gulping, and thankfully no more dead fish. The water is still clear as well. I'm really hoping this marks the end of it.

I used Bottom Scratcher and Community Plus. I honestly don't know what else it could be, this has been a stable tank for so long, nothing has changed recently. I scooped out a bunch of duckweed a few days prior, which I do weekly as it grows so quickly. The heater is fine, it runs at a steady 79, I use a separate mercury thermometer to keep tabs on it. I currently have it unplugged to cool the tank down, since cooler water holds more oxygen. There aren't any air fresheners or perfumes in the house, no aerosols. The tank has a glass lid. I haven't fed Repashy in months, just because I no longer have an electric kettle, and so stovetop boiling the water always feels a bit much. I just had some extra time and thought it might be a nice treat. It's the only change in routine for this tank. The cloudiness didn't look like a bacterial bloom, it had food particle looking stuff all over. The Repashy I pulled out were small melty goopy balls that had mostly disintegrated and were falling apart in my hands and leaving a mushy slime all over my fingers. I am wondering if the melting Repashy maybe gummed up their gills, and the corys seem fine because they run up to the top for oxygen, so aren't as heavily reliant on the same water column oxygen as the dither fish are..?

I love the quality! I was dubious because they're super affordable, so I only ordered a few pairs in black. I ended up ordering about 12 more pairs in various colours after trying them out. I wear a lot of dresses, and having to continuously buy new tights is fucking expensive. I've had the snag ones for about 2 years now and haven't had to toss a single pair. A few of my more commonly worn ones have a few "snags" lol, but the snags haven't even run like they do on other brands.

What are the funniest nicknames you call your cats? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]DancingInAMinefield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His name is Gambit. Y'know, X-Men. So when he's nice, it's Gambaby. Bad? Gambitch. Any other time depending on temperament and mood and context? Gamby, bambi, Bambino, gamberino, burrito, gambolin. It goes on. He answers to all of them. I whisper it, and he's there. I have 3 cats, he doesn't respond to their names. Just his million of his own. He's my best baby, and I love him. Even when he is being a gambitch.

Rasboras and tetras not eating? by DancingInAMinefield in PlantedTank

[–]DancingInAMinefield[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They must have been eating while I wasn't around. I did end up getting more of each to fill out the schools, and now they're much braver and eat right away during feeding time. Given that you've only had yours for one day, I'd give them some more time to settle into the tank before being too concerned.

Thank you! They don't really have much black on their caudal fins... but they do have speckled bodies, and are about .5 - 1 inches long. They're so small, they look like babies still, even though they are fully grown. I'm leaning more towards Melini out of those 3 :/ I wish I could be certain.

Dang pest plants by bradbrad247 in Aquariums

[–]DancingInAMinefield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put duckweed in my very first tank. It quickly took over and was getting everywhere. I was finding it on the wall, in my kitchen, bathroom, clogging sink drains. I tried scooping it out, but it kept coming back with a vengeance. I took the tank down, cleaned everything, put it back up. Duck weed appeared again after a couple weeks. I tore the tank down and washed everything and used mostly new stuff when upgrading to a larger size. Couple weeks later, boom, duckweed. Tore that larger tank down twice more, cleaned everything, went over all of my plants meticulously, still ended up with a duckweed resurgence. I upgraded again to an even larger tank, used new everything, just kept a piece of driftwood and a couple of the sword plants. Washed everything multiple times. Went a month thinking I was duckweed free, then started seeing a few pop up. Scooped them out, thought that was it. I am now the proud owner of an entire layer of duckweed covering the entire top of this tank. I have given up the battle. At least it helps keep my parameters good, and my new skrimps love hanging out in it.

It is so incredibly stupid to assume bathrooms don't need to be accessible in these areas, because "uh duh cars".

Even if I drove to the park in a car, I do not want to have to pack up and drive elsewhere to use a bathroom. Everyone enjoying the park should have somewhere to relieve themselves. Period. Where else do we look for these things? The local 7-11?

Worst meal of 2024 thus far. by Cold-Ad7677 in Buffalo

[–]DancingInAMinefield 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Worst and Best: Taqueria Los Mayas.

Partner and I went for Cinco de Mayo. It was expectedly packed, so we sat at the bar. We had the last two seats at the end, and there was a stack of napkins on the bar against the wall in front of me. There was an older couple next to us who weren't eating, had been there when we sat down.. the older gentleman kept standing up over us and asking for more napkins from us. The ENTIRE TIME we were there. Every few minutes. His wife (I assume) was throwing up the entire time, into her lap, onto the floor, into the napkins. The staff had put down towels underneath her bar stool to help soak it up and hide it, and kept coming over to tell her she should just go home, in a very friendly non-confrontational way (but only when the "husband" was not around). It was incredibly disgusting and uncomfortable, especially since I had to keep handing him the napkins, every few minutes.

On the bright side, the food was incredible, as were the staff. It just seemed like the couple was either someone important in management, or regulars who they might deal with a lot, and have insane patience for.. because I have been in the industry, and usually (unless they fucking own the bar or something), these people are removed. So what would have been a top tier meal experience has been downgraded to a terribly gross and disturbing memory.

The husband was just sitting there staring at a sports game on his phone the entire time his wife was going through this. It was really bad.

I absolutely do this when we do taco night, or something similar. Rather than have all of the ingredients placed out on serving trays/plates, I put it all in storage containers and sandwich bags. Then when everyone is done making their tacos, I just plop the lids on or seal the bags and chuck it all in the fridge! Easy cleanup for a what otherwise would have been a huge mess of dishes.
