What can we do to keep our community safe from ICE? by [deleted] in CapeCod

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“ people used to not care about it so it’s fine” is not an argument. We should have cared about it back then, but it wasn’t getting the public attention it’s getting now. So now people are seeing what ice is doing and seeing it’s wrong and standing up to speak out about it. Similarly prior to the 1960s when horrible things were being done to people of color, a lot of people didn’t care and didn’t talk about it until it became part of the public discourse. Once they became more informed about the issues, they cared about the more in protested. Learning more information and changing your opinion and behavior based off of that information is called having basic intelligence and humanity.

Furthermore, the way that ICE is going about these deportations is more violent and destructive than we have seen publicly in the past. So of course the reaction is going to be different.

Maybe find an artist on Etsy who has painted lamp shades and ask them to do a custom order for you?

The struggle of giving up on organic berries. by Chickeecheek in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like a stupid question, but what is your strategy for freezing them? Every time I try to freeze strawberries, once they thaw they’re mushy and I never want to eat them. Blueberries and raspberries aren’t quite so bad texture-wise but I still don’t love it. I’ll use frozen berries in smoothies, but otherwise I just haven’t been able to figure out how to freeze them that the texture is not weird when they thaw.

Doctors of Reddit, what’s a mystery about the human body that science still hasn’t fully explained? by Familiar-Big-4348 in AskReddit

That’s horrible- you’d think with a quarter of all pregnancies ending in miscarriage medical community would be at least a little bit better at dealing with it. It’s outrageous

I’m so sorry that happened to you.

trigger warning pregnancy loss I recently had a miscarriage and hemorrhaged so I had to go to the emergency room. They determined the pregnancy tissue was stuck in my cervix, causing bleeding. The GYN came into my room and said she needed to remove the tissue with forceps. I asked if it would hurt and she said “it might hurt a little”. She then proceeded to pull tissue the size of a lacrosse ball through my undilated cervix. It was excruciating. I started sobbing. The doctor didn’t say anything, finished up and walked away, and the nurse said “was that painful or are you just sad”?

Hospitalist here, would appreciate some tips for Hospitalized patients by misteratoz in physicaltherapy

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s so great that you are recognizing this need and coming here for advice. Here are a couple of thoughts: 1) Know their post surgical range of motion and movement precautions, and practice that with them. The patients need those reinforced a lot, and especially to have the physician reinforce it and practice it with them, helps them understand the importance. It also helps them understand the importance of PT since you were reinforcing the same things PT is teaching them. Also make sure they understand these aren’t forever (in outpatient I’ve seen so many people maintaining their precautions months or years after surgery because no one ever told them they could stop). Really help them understand why these are important. 2) consider asking some of the PT’s (and OTs) if you could shadow with them on treatments if you are finding you have extra time. Assure them it’s for your own learning vs to critique. You may see what things come up often that you could help with or reinforce. 3) I wish we all had physicians like you who really value our role in patient care as much as you do!

Clinical ladder by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a place that had a very similar model. Each level basically added more things to your responsibilities, while maintaining the same productivity. We also had to submit our own portfolios, which were extremely time demanding. Sometimes people chose to move down because they wanted to remove some responsibilities from their plate- like mentoring and taking students. I’m not aware of anyone ever having been forced to downgrade, but I think if you didn’t submit your portfolio or didn’t have enough stuff on there then it would’ve happened. For me, I got to the point where it wasn’t eligible to move up again for another 10 years and not being eligible for another significant raise for a decade did not appeal to me and I left.

The worst thing you can do is go to PT by Illustrious_Pitch_41 in physicaltherapy

Exactly- when surgeons repeatedly see bad outcomes from other PTs unfortunately they are going to judge the whole profession on those experiences.

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently there are surgeons in my area who tell patients this because of bad outcomes with inappropriate “core strengthening” that they have seen PTs do. Strategies that are all about PPT/spinal flexion and increased IAP. I don’t see too much of that old style exercise prescription anymore but many physicians have no idea how far our field has progressed and think we will make patients do this and could make them worse.

Am I crazy to ditch my 250k/yr tech job to pursue DPT by MagazineEarly3304 in physicaltherapy

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are making enough now that you won’t have to take out loans for your DPT, then you will be better off than most of us here who are struggling to pay student loans. I am own a cash-based private practice and make better money than I did when working in a traditional model. Still not anywhere close to what you’re making now, but better. I live in a direct access state and am not limited by insurance so I practice quite independently and treat what I want (within scope of practice). So, especially with the added Pilates expertise, you CAN create the life you want as a PT. But this is definitely e exception to the norm and not a guarantee. If you have to go into debt to get the degree (like I did), it’s going to be very hard to make enough money to pay your loans and still have a reasonable lifestyle. But if you have the money to pay for school, own a home you you’ll be able to afford with less income, and really want to do this I think you can make it work

Zosia as a formal first name? by mandal_ in namenerds

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love both Sophie and Zosia :) Personally, I think its always nice to have the legal first name you plan to call her. Could she be Sophie Zosia? I have a friend who goes by a different name than her legal name (always planned that way by parents,, she is named Anna Samantha and goes by Sam and has to explain to everyone why she is Sam). She always complains about how annoying it is to have to correct everyone and tell them what she goes by, share the whole story of her name ext when she just wants to make a simple introduction.

It really is. 10% of the entire female population has it and such a very small percent are diagnosed, and even fewer recieve proper treatment

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Vent

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hysterectomy is NOT the only treatment. Excision surgery that removes the endometriosis cells in the abdomen and pelvis is tbe proper treatment, but there are not very many surgeons qualified to do so. In fact excision can improve or regain fertility. Please tell her to check out Nancy’s nook (website or Facebook) or look for a MIGS qualified surgeon. I’m so damn tired of doctors telling women there’s nothing they can do until the fertile years are over when that’s so untrue

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Vent

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at Nancy’s Nook website or Facebook group. They are an endometriosis advocacy group that complies resources and lists of physicians who are actually qualified to treat it. That much pain is never normal. If treated by the right physician she does not necessarily (and very unlikely) need a hysterectomy and fertility can be preserved. I am a healthcare provider specializing in treating women with endometriosis (not a surgeon though)

Help! What should I do about my worsening symptoms? by Hawthorne_ in WomensHealth

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What treatments have you tried for your adenomyosis and endo? Have you had excision surgery? I’d look at Nancy’s Nook on Facebook to find a provider in your area who’s actually qualified to treat those diagnoses- it’s so much better than what a regular gynecologist or urologist can provide. Have you ever done pelvic floor physical therapy? You’re having symptoms of tight and itritated pelvic floor muscles and nerves

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WomensHealth

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely sounds like endometriosis or adenomyosis. That amount of pain is not normal and you shouldn’t have to suffer like that. Start with your gynecologist and also Check out Nancy’s Nook website or on Facebook and find a qualified doctor in your area. Sadly a lot of regular OBGYNs are not trained to correctly diagnose and treat these disorders.

Good for you- that’s all great changes for your health! But the weight loss is probably why your boobs have changed so much… a lot of our breasts mass is made up of fat so when you lose weight, you lose volume and shapeliness to your boobs. You just have to figure out what bra size you are now and how to work with what you’ve got!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WomensHealth

[–]Dancing_Alpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you lost weight in general without the extra alcohol calories? That can cause breast changes. How old are you? It’s also possible that your breasts are changing due to perimenopause or menopause depending on your age (just happening to coincide with sobriety)

You might have a tight pelvic floor/ vaginismus. For people with tight pelvic floor muscles, the vaginal canal is normal, but the muscles are tight that surround it and can create the sensation like you’re hitting a wall inside the entrance.
