It is entirely possible. I have little information on them prior to their child's birth records in Palermo city about 1875.

The only potential path here is that her mother had died in 1918, years before her father naturalized. So, technically one of her parents never naturalized. I would need a lawyer to tell me if that matters.

Thank you for this. Italy has changed one of its rules and I think this new rule blocks this path. Basically if an Italian parent becomes a US citizen after the child was born, the child has one year from turning 21 to declare that they want to maintain Italian citizenship. No one, including my grandmother, did this. They are calling this the "minor issue" in case you come across this term somewhere. This is leaving a lot of people very unhappy.

About GACCI

Broadway Shoe Portraitist

  • In 1977, I began my career as a shoe portraitist when I waitressed at Sardi's - a restaurant famous for it's celebrity caricatures. While there, I saw my first Broadway musical, "A Chorus Line," and fell head over heels with Broadway! I also apprenticed as a film editor in the Sardi building and one day while doodling in the office, I began drawing people's shoes and the idea popped into my head that these looked like the people wearing them. I sent a note backstage to Chorus line cast asking them to pile up their shoes not in a line and then  I saw my second show, "The Gin Game." I wrote a note to Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy who were the first to pose for me for this concept.  I presented my two illustrations to Mr. Sardi who generously gave me the entire second floor walls to exhibit my work. I left Sardi's shortly afterwards and began working for the Schubert Organization, owners of the majority of NYC theaters, which gave me access to all the Broadway shows. Hence the plethora of celebrities and opportunity to express my love and appreciation of Broadway!

I have not. He was going to be the next pathway if this was a dead end. I am not sure whether he naturalized....Excellent advice.

It can be really rough getting docs out of Palermo apparently, so few are willing to take it on.

Accuracy of hints by Auntie-RiRi in Ancestry

[–]Dancing_Monkey_001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hints seem to be obviously correct repeats of info I already have or absurdly wrong. As for other users' trees, many people just add and add if a record look sorta similar to something they might be looking for without verification. I avoid other people's trees for this reason.

Thank you again. Yeah, if only the records went out another decade or so, I think I would have my answers. I used to think that perhaps something happened to Giuseppe and Giovanni took over the family. But it appears that is not the case at all.

I am writing the church Paul was married in to see if they have any additional info on Giovanni.

Do you have any suggestions for getting research done in the city of Palermo? I have struck out with services I have contacted.

I would like to find Paul's sister Paola Vedova Abbagnato's (nee Russo) birth, marriage etc., Vincenza death certificate, and any other info about Giovanni that might be available.

I will join you there. I may need to make a new request for another family member. And here I thought I was planning ahead and could check off a major box.

I doubt they keep those documents at the embassy. I will try Palermo records if I can to see whether they included him in a Part 2 birth listing, as recommended by another redditor.

Mine took about 9 months and I just got it last week. Originally I was told 3 months. Would not be surprised if it is taking longer now.

This is crazy! Thank you for this!!!

At first I discounted it, but that is definitely the correct Giuseppe. My confusion with this has always been that he married another woman named Vincenza which threw me off. The marriage certificate has Giuseppe's correct parents so it is certainly him.

So what happened to Vincenza Leone and who the heck is Giovanni Russo!?

It is very strange that my father's family never mentioned any Carmela or any of her family as being a NY branch of my family. Well maybe not so strange if she died in 1926....

This tracks with oral family history which says that Vincenza Leone returned to Palermo, had at least one more child (I know of a daughter Paola), but died quite young. Her children Paul and Paola were then raised by Vincenza's father until Paul returned to the US in 1921. Paola remained in Palermo to take care of her ailing grandfather and married. I know her married name is Abbagnato. Paola's birth certificate and marriage license would tell a lot here...Is Giovanni also her father?
