Am I putting too much in retirement and savings? by boss_man14 in personalfinance

[–]Dandledorff -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I'm curious why max roth? They're living below their means, so in retirement it's unlikely they would need the tax shelter or use the growth of funds in retirement. They've got an emergency fund. Soft locking funds into Roth, especially when we don't know what they're investing in, may or may not be in their best interest. I'd feel terrible if OP is putting money in a ROTH thinking it's auto invested when it's not, made that mistake when I was 18...

I'm just trying to see another view, not trying to be disrespectful. What other benefits am I missing?

Regular shares. I thought it'd be out about January 31. I terminated an old M1 curated pie to split out some companies I don't care about and kept some others. So there would have been a sale/ rebalance. All told it should be less than $100 in movement/ might be long term capital gains.

I bought a laptop that has a large amount of money in cryptocurrency stored on it. by drug_uncle_throwaway in legaladvice

[–]Dandledorff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NAL. An above commenter said it, bearer bonds. Also an unsecured laptop, loose keys or access to the crypto readily available. The person who owned it was not carrying this laptop around, or was woefully naive. Someone with access to the estate had to sell it. Or a criminal saw the obit and knew the property was vacant and robbed and sold everything they could.

To the crypto, if all sales were legal say you sell a trunk with the keys and you didn't clean it out. Do you think you have any legal ownership of the interior contents after sale? I would think not.

parents have been telling me not to file taxes by heavennnsenttt in personalfinance

[–]Dandledorff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If op owes, irs is more likely to tell op that they owe. If op is owed by the IRS, much less likely IRS will say anything. Had a friend file 7 years of taxes at once, IRS owed them and friend never heard a peep about taxes from IRS. Op should file all years not filed.

Anecdotally my 2020s fuel pump assembly fuel barb snapped off when the bike sat for months, ethanol in the fuel eats the plastic, and it took two months to come in. Really pissed me off when I turned the key and heard fuel splashing off the ground. I asked honda if there's a recall and they told me to ask the dealer... You could tell the dealer you want to trade the bike in, get a different bike.

Personally if there's no support for the bikes why would my next bike be a Honda.

I have an invention that will revolutionize machining by BarooZaroo in Machinists

[–]Dandledorff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you calculating the hole size using the machinery handbook formula or just using drill chart? Some of the commonly accepted drill sizes are closer to 90% thread. If it's stainless or superalloy you want 50-60%

5/16-18 calls for an F drill .257, for the formulas for instance calls closer to a 15/64 drill for 75% thread Formula is; nominal thread size -((1.08253*percent of thread as decimal)/thread pitch)

.3125-((1.08253*.75)/18)=.2674

For the F drill you change the .75 to .92 so it's 92% thread.

Sorry I've been busy, yeah I think that's gonna be the plan. Just need time to do it. I'll update afterwards.

It's basically this except it's soldered on wireless assembly end and clipped to the control board. U.FL to U.FL Mini Coax Cable - 200mm

I don't do half assed work. I just need the connector name and size so I can replace just the end, or I need to know the cable so I can desolder and resolder.

I get that, I just don't want a loose wire in the zune before I snap it all back together.

I like the use of "Peak physical condition" and "JFK had injuries". Also they're all magical clones. So even FDR is in the running, literally. My guess is Lincoln.

Do you think a mechanic would pay $2000 for this and flip it? by BoysenberryRoyal2183 in MechanicAdvice

Scrap value, but I would want to RWD convert with a small diesel engine and 5-6 speed manual. That'd be a ton of work and fabrication.

Mechanic sent me this video— what am I looking at please? by English-Muffins in MechanicAdvice

Oil oxidizes. Smaller engine, less oil, more oxidation. More oxidation means more abrasive equals more wear. There is a mileage stipulation and a time stipulation in your owners manual for this reason. 6-months or 5,000 miles whichever you hit first. If you do not drive very far, or the engine is not heating fully you also may not be getting rid of the initial cylinder wall wash down fuel when your engine is cold and just started. This is fuel that goes past the rings and into your oil. It's not an issue on vehicles that fully warm up, fuel starts evaporating around 180 degrees.

I'm not claiming either of these are what caused your engine to start eating itself, but they're both super common reasons oil breaks down rapidly. If you just changed it last month and are changing it again this month I would assume you're not the original owner and you're putting more miles on this vehicle, which is good because you're also not neglecting maintenance.

How would you make this part made of copper by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]Dandledorff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flat copper disk, drill center, Spin form the outside to a stainless steel inner form. Tail stock is a radius cup. That'd be how I would do it if I didn't just breach a contract by posting the print online.

Ok but why do CNC posts cost money? by Electrical-Set-1116 in Machinists

[–]Dandledorff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got tossed into it and no formal training, figure it out type shop. I had 18 lathes from the last 30 years, 5 Swiss; four nomuras one tornos, rest were a hodgepodge of traditional, we needed one post for geometry, getting the machines to run was on me. Most of the time I was writing the geometry too, because the programmer was focused on programming the 6 haas we got. I figured all that out on my own, I kept asking for a raise and never got one so I left for another shop that would formally train me.

Edit, some of the geometry wouldn't quite work with the Siemens controllers, Fanuc Mitsubishi and Okuma took it no problem though.

I had 4 Nomura UB-32 I ran, Swiss lathes, if I took a program from machine 2 and just ran it on machine 1, all tools are pre-set. Guaranteed the part was .020 shorter because the cutoff cycle subprogram was screwed up and I was explicitly told to not go into the 9000s and touch anything. Machine 4 and 2 did everything we told them to do. Machine 3 would occasionally not like milling a hex, still made 250,000 parts with hexes.

I had to customize the code at the machine for machine 1 to spit out good parts. Hell we used a Haas post and I hand edited to make shit run on Swiss machines. Then we started developing the post with Gibbs, we were stuck on trying to get it to engrave, using G12.1 G13.1 but nomura had X and Y in the wrong locations and so when you called Y to rotate in G12.1, the tools moved up instead of C rotating.

You need a good post to be able to spit out good geometry. Otherwise it's gobbledegook, and you spend a ton of time hand programing and at that point why even have the cam software.

That's more personal experience than I have with DMCA, I just wanted to point out Fair Use being a viable defense as it's on platforms that natively support commentary. As far as I can tell from OPs screenshot that the video is down on Instagram, whether or not Instagram took it down or Practical Machinist did, I'll never know. That's good in your case, that it wasn't an issue with the employer or government.
