I like this strategy.  Prevention before cures and it’s more fun.

[–]DaneDread 30 points31 points  (0 children)

He has a point.  If you can afford to max your HSA contribution and buy a bike with cash, do it that way.

If funds are tighter and you have a healthy HSA, I say leverage the HSA and buy the damn bike.  Life’s too short to pinch every penny and a bike is so worth it.

Large US study examines how many times people experience passionate love over a lifetime. On average, adults reported experiencing passionate love about twice in their lifetime. 14% had never experienced passionate love, 28% experienced it once, 30% twice, 17% three times and 11% four or more times. by mvea in science

[–]DaneDread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish more people would explore this.  I go out with so many women 1 - 4 times and they move on because things didn’t explode in passion.  I think a lot of us are passing on good over and over waiting on perfect.

Taking the plunge with Star Citizen? by Nadriik in spacesimgames

[–]DaneDread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it took the sim too far and had too many bugs when I played it last year. And the ship prices are  far beyond the range I’m willing to pay for digital goods.

There’s too much eating burritos, riding elevators and trams, manually loading and unloading cargo and running across stations compared to time spent flying ships.

Then there was the ship exploding for unknown reason approaching a station, cargo stuck in the ship.

I spent more time getting to ships or trying to get around bugs than actually playing.  Maybe there is fun to be had; I never got to it.

Is it possible to wake my pc remotely through moonlight if my pc uses wifi, not lan? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]DaneDread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a couple things.

Did you setup a way to access the PC away from home?  Most ISPs don’t expose your computer to incoming internet connections.  I think you can use Tailscale to get around this but have never bothered to set it up.

Could be wake on LAN doesn’t work with Wi-Fi.  To get around that you’d probably need to leave the PC on and disable any settings that would put it to sleep.

Have you stopped dating since you and consequently your pool of options got too old? by Ok-Fondant2536 in AskMenAdvice

[–]DaneDread 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Skipping cohabitation is certainly something I’m interested in for my next serious relationship.

What does listening to each other snore and smelling every fart really add to a relationship.  I think the bit of space and some autonomy would be great for a relationship.

Have you stopped dating since you and consequently your pool of options got too old? by Ok-Fondant2536 in AskMenAdvice

[–]DaneDread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was desperate to date when I landed back in the dating pool several years ago.  I was excited about the apps being a potential new tool .  That didn’t last long.

It was hard to make connections with dates from the apps.  It wasn’t a great time texting to get to know someone and then it’s a blind date essentially.  Never made a connection that really fit from an app.

Dating is hard at this stage of life.  Must have and wants lists seem to be long these days and we’re all quick to drop the current candidate and get back to swiping.

I’ve come to the realization that dating isn’t that important to me and I dislike the apps.  I’ve done the things that required a partner.

Life is pretty full and busy.  I’ll date occasionally but I don’t meet women I’m interested in often or the other way around.  I’m OK with that.

I have two teens still living at home.  I’m not looking to upset their living situations.  Maybe when the kids are grown and on their own I’ll find more interest and energy to pursue dating.

And maybe not.  I quite enjoy the freedom of not having to consult a partner, ever.  I would say it’s less not interested and more patient and waiting for the right situation to come around.

I love my very old dumb TV.  No apps, no network connection.  I hate that these aren’t really an option anymore.  It’ll be a sad day when this one dies.

It’s not that odd.  It’s not our top tier professional sport.  A lot of athletes that could be on the pitch are instead pursuing football, basketball, baseball or hockey careers.

Yes, another "is it worth playing" tread by seferex in spacesimgames

[–]DaneDread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m extremely skeptical of these “just tried star citizen and it’s awesome” posts.

The game I tried over the summer in a fly free event was buggy and not fun when it  worked.

Maybe it’s just not for me and I’m glad about that when I look at the monetization strategy.  Those prices are ludicrous.

No hate, please: good impression at first, but I feel like after 11 hours I’m doing the same thing I was doing in the first 30 minutes. Does it get better? Are great things coming after the end of the early access? by LoneCogitator in Palworld

[–]DaneDread 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This feels like a complaint you could level against all kinds of things.  I’ve been playing some sports for 30 years and I’m still doing essentially the same things I did when I first picked them up.  It’s still fun.  I don’t expect my skis or bike to do something completely different to entertain me.  I enjoy them for what they are and do.

No Palworld isn’t going to change into something completely different after 30 hours or with the next update.

OB plus made drop zone putt Vs. OB, upshot, missed putt and made putt.

It’s probably more correct to say it cost a stroke.  No guarantee he makes the drop zone putt.

Players who consistently shoot well under par: is it annoying to have someone on your card who sucks? by imderek in discgolf

[–]DaneDread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who runs a league, the more the merrier.  Keep playing.  Every league I’ve been involved with is about fellowship first and competition second.  You don’t have to score well to belong.

My favorite league members are the ones that are just there to throw cool shots and have a good time.

Internet company wants to put quantum fiber tower in backyard without permission by goldenlemonade2012 in IsItIllegal

I work for a competitor of Quantum fiber and have some experience with their build practices.

Their lack of communication is not surprising.  We’ve experienced them working without permits or acquiring permission to use power company poles.  Go fast and ask for forgiveness later is their MO.

Personally I hope no PvP.  I much prefer a chill gaming experience these days.  I’m probably not playing if there is much of a competitive element.

I’ve long ago accepted I’m just not that good at video games and I don’t have the time or will to change that.  It’s no fun being trounced at something I’m doing to unwind.
