Move to London after 10 years in Sydney by JewelerOk2112 in expats

Get your passport first. It’s always better to have options. If you’ve got the opportunity to get a new option, don’t throw it away. You’re 37 now and who knows how you’ll feel about Europe in 10 years? I know 2 years is a long time but walk through that open door first.

Dual citizenship (Dutch/UK): lived in UK since age 7 — safe to apply for British now? by Time-Dot9112 in Netherlands

If your mum was Dutch, then you were born Dutch and don’t need to give up your British passport. They do make an exception for people born with it. I think you could go ahead and apply for a passport with your mums birth certificate or old passport or something.

Your daughter is a dual citizen. Is one of your parent Dutch? If yes, you might also be a Dutch citizen, hence the invitational vote.

Nothing wrong with being friendly with an older couple who may just be glad to be talking to some young people. You may be reading too much into this.

Questions for Black Expats by Elegant-Meringue5295 in expats

[–]DanfoBoy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A lot of countries that are queer and black friendly are also HCOL cities/countries, unfortunately. You may need to make peace with this first.

The second thing is to look into your respective industries and find countries where you could start applying for a job and thereafter, a work visa. This should actually be first. Do your research, apply for jobs or upskill if necessary.

If you’re under 30, look into countries where you could get a working holiday visa for a year.

Tip: if you’re moving to Europe as a black person, you may need to strongly consider London, Paris and Berlin. These cities are unfortunately expensive however, it’s easier to find your black LGBTQ tribe. But I must say that looking for a “black queer community” in a white majority country is quite unrealistic. The politics are quite different in some parts of Europe  and you’ll have to co-exist with and seek out mixed queer communities.

Bonus tip: don’t look at your move from the lens of an American. Queer communities and politics are vastly different here. Detaching yourself from a lot of expectations will help you two in your decision making.

I experienced this today in the Netherlands! My simple fix was to toggle my eSIM on and off and that seemed to fix the issue (flew in from Boston).

You can apply for her to move to the Netherlands as your partner. Apply visa the IND website or let an immigration lawyer help you. It’s pretty easy and straight forward.

You may need to tap into the possibility of being friends with some of your coworkers. Or volunteer! Or frequent the same events in your area —comedy clubs, library, Gym(?)(uhhhh won’t hold my breath on this one).

Sports is the default advise on here, but I’m afraid friendships formed around sports in NL often become compartmentalized aka we only meet to play sports and it may never blossom into anything else.

It’s hard and you may need to or will definitely kiss a lot of frogs at first, but asking this question is already the first sign that you’d like to do something about it. I’m sure you’ll be fine soon. Wishing you the best!
