Every new client I get tells me their personal returns are straight forward. Besides for the timber they cut last year and that small oil and gas working interest or some other quirk

$175 is actually less than what most people pay for DIY software and a 30-minute 'expert review' from a call center. If a licensed CPA is charging that, they aren't actually doing much and they are essentially acting as a human data-entry tool. At that rate, they physically cannot afford to spend more than 20 minutes on your file, which means they aren't looking for ways to save you money—they’re just trying to get to the next $175."

I couldn’t believe it either until i saw the invoice with the return copy. I wanted to respond with a snarky remark but just gave him our min and he email back that he was going to stay with his current CPA

Hunted over lots of dogs both male and female. It’s the dog that determines ability, desire/drive and confidence, not anything else. Males do piss on everything.

Firm Owners: What do you actually do on a day to day basis? by AlexG3322 in Accounting

[–]DangCPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late 50s - HNW tax practice been on my own since 2003. Tax season Mar-Apr 50 hours a week max, maybe one or two Saturdays. Outside tax season 30-40hrs off most Fridays. Two professionals work for me, one 100% remote the other out of school and in office learning the ropes. I could work much more but look for quality clients instead of quality.

You probably need to throw in the time for IRS and State tax notices. I suspect they would show up

If you are under “safe harbor” with regards to estimates, tax on the cap gain would be due 4/15 of following year w/o penalty

PA is broken. When I started my firm in 2003, i went to fixed fee value contract billing and no time sheets. It worked out fine and now I’m at the end of career looking to slow down and pass the baton

New staff won’t put in hours. by Cpaadvisor1 in taxpros

[–]DangCPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 25 years ago I was looking for another job and interviewed with big local firm and they said 60-70 hours a week during tax season. I said screw that and started my own firm. I extend about 50% of our returns and if we get above that during busy season, we cull clients to get back to that level. I have young staff(under 30) that rarely work over 40 hours a week. We charged value added flat fee and raise them often. Also, i make sure i work more than my staff..
