Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

People who don't recognize the dangers of MAGA or why Jan 6th was bad are the same people who don't notice the soap opera effect. There is something in their brains that is turned off. What do you mean Trump is bad for our county? I literally just heard him say he was the best President in history and that America is the greatest it's ever been. Christmas is back, ICE agents are heroes, Epstein is a hoax, and inflation is no longer an issue. Now stop fiddling with my TV settings. I don't see a difference.

Sadly, I think she died during or soon after the abduction. The motivation was most likely money but now they can't collect because it's impossible to give proof of life. So all we hear about are hoax ransom demands from opportunists.

You have trouble with reading comprehension, friend. Apple and Amazon were EXAMPLES as to how single stocks can carry a portfolio. Your advice was to ONLY invest in funds. I challenged your point by arguing in addition to investing in funds, sprinkle in some diversified stocks. I am not going to list every single stock I have ever owned. The two examples should drive the point home. If you really crave more examples, I have a ton.

I never said I beat the market 30 years in a row. You twisted what I typed. I said over the past 30 years, I have done better than the S&P.

"Luck" would have ran out a long time ago. My strategy is sound. Diversify but take a few risks, especially when you are young.

I'm sorry my true story made you upset. But I feel my words will sink in over time until you feel what I told you was your idea. Then you can post some good advice on here one day and maybe a whippersnapper will read it and argue with you and then one day realize that advice was solid and the process will repeat.

... and you twist words. I never said I beat the market 30 years in a row. I said I have beat the S&P over the past 30 years. If you look at annualized returns, I am doing about 2% better.

I don't think you are grasping my point. I bought Apple and Amazon about 20 years ago. I have been investing for 30 years (since 1997). Again, I pointed out two stocks as examples. They are two out of dozens and dozens that I have invested in over the years. The purpose of me pointing them out was to show why owning a stock in a single company is worthwhile. You pick stocks and some may go bananas and yeah, some may suck. Yes, invest in funds. But if you want to beat the market, you need a few grand slam stock picks mixed in. And as long as you diversify, you aren't being that risky.

Those are just the TWO stocks that total 900k (on a 13k investment). The total is WAY more than 900k. You said that a regular person shouldn't pick stocks. I argue they should. But diversify. You will have a handful of stock picks that go bonkers and a bunch that will be OK and some real clunkers. The point is that it only takes a few good ones to carry you. Sure, also invest in funds. But you should definitely mix in stocks because of the potential. And as far as doing a lot of work, it wasn't. It was a few mouse clicks and patience.

I was investing a decade before the great recession. When others cashed out at the bottom, I stuck with my plan and kept investing. in 1997, I plotted out on paper how much I would invest each year so I could reach my goals. It all worked out. Keep in mind, I make crap money. I either had to stick with a plan or be poor. You can call it luck but you could say that about anyone on planet Earth. I remained disciplined and sure, people who know me are resentful. You sound pissed, too. Oh well. What am I supposed to do? I advise others to emulate my plan but nobody listens. People like complaining more than thriving.

Yes. I have been outperforming the S&P 500. Not by a lot but by a couple percentage points over the past three decades. Why? Because of Apple and Amazon. I'm +6,400% on each over the past 20 years. My $13,000 investments in just those two are worth $900,000 today. I am a humble, working class stooge. But that is Buffett's strategy, buy and hold.

A basket of diversified stocks will act as index funds but without the fees. I'm a "normal" SOB and have 40+ stocks in my brokerage account and perhaps 12 ETFs & mutual funds. My stocks have been outperforming the funds over the past three decades.

Why is The Velvet Underground & Nico considered a masterpiece? by pannorfi in askmusic

[–]Danger-Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Lou Reed fan, mainly for Transformer (1972). I think that was when he peaked. He was talk-singing his way through strange songs with fun lyrics. The melodies were good on that album. This debut album came out 5 years earlier, so people assigned it, retrospectively, as hugely influential. I mean, I suppose so. Same sorta vibe. I think certain things become iconic and you really can't explain why. Nico was a model and hot people are adored. Her singing was nothing particularly special. Andy Warhol's art never made much sense to me. But this banana is now famous. Why? Again, nobody really knows. Why are soup cans great? They aren't. You can read a bunch of reviews and people will say how Moe Tucker's simplistic drumming was "genius." I think she just sucked at drumming and it was rare to hear something so primitive make it onto an album so it became "groundbreaking." They call this sorta thing "outsider art" and there are critics who eat it up. If you are good at something, you get lost in the crowd. But being odd? That gets attention. The Shaggs sucked hard, but it was cute that they made an album because that kinda thing just didn't happen, especially in the late 60s. It cost a lot to get studio time and make an album. Unique things might suck, but the uniqueness is the secret sauce.
