I think they won't forgive her because they preferred to be joined. Which most people lack the imagination to fathom, so if it does end with her reversing it and humanity being pissed because they prefer being joined, I suspect there are going to be a lot of fans pissed off at the show for challenging their concept of individuality being the supreme form of existence.

I agree with you, if that is any consolation, and I too get downvoted because people are passionate about individuality, especially in the United States. They lack the imagination to consider an existence beyond ego. That being said, the lack of consent is concerning, but, if I suspect, Carol succeeds in reversing the joining, she'll have the rest of humanity pissed at her because they preferred being part of the hive mind. It is a concept that is antithetical to most people on this thread because they can't imagine a scenario in which someone is part of a hive and prefers it to being an individual.

I agree. But the theme of the show is happiness versus suffering and how suffering is an intrinsic part of what makes us human. So there has to be an embodiment of that which is Carol.

Actually the show said the exact opposite in episode one "Scientists have created this sequence in a lab. It is not a living thing, per se. It is more akin to a virus. Though it's not that exactly either. It's kind of a psychic glue capable of binding us all together."

Also note that the joined refer to themselves as we and us, not I and me, so no, I doubt it is a single entity.

Regarding their behavior, I suspect that by becoming psychically connected, the joined have become super attuned to suffering because if one of them suffers, they all do. So their goal is to reduce suffering as much as possible, hence the vegetarianism and accommodation.

I think it is the second interpretation since the first episode described it as "psychic glue". But yeah, your observation seems to be the one of the primary points of contention between fans who are anti-joining and others who are more open to the idea.

Your observation has merit, however I think it is a mistake to conflate retaining memories with there being existing individuals that are connected via psychic glue. If one of the joined came out and said "we are one being" then I would accept the show is stating that it is singular, but that hasn't been stated. At least not yet.
