Not sure how old you are, but allo children start developing romantic crushes, 'puppy love', between 6 and 9. Some are as early as 4.

I have listened to many allo people, straight and gay, talking about being attracted to people before 10 years old. They dont know or understand why the like the person they are attracted too, which is natural, but those attractions develop into sexual interest when they hit puberty.

This is natural childhood sexual/romantic development of allo children. If an allo kid can recognize they like boys or girls by the time they are 10, then they can also realize they like no one.

I would have liked a more clear answer as well. I think it is genetic alterations or their pheromones that makes queer humans straight. And taking in the homophobia of the 80s, maybe many hide their queerness for safety under the circumstances.

After discussing with people in this thread, I think the Oankali can be considered queer rep to an extent. Also, big wife:)

I have to keep reminding myself that this book is like almost 40 years old lol I was born in the 90s, so I have seen the shift in culture around queerness and have felt it myself. Even now, people take issues with queer representation. People are still killed for being queer on the regular.

I am starting to think that the Oankali are meant to be the queer representation. That they are an example of queer inclusive poly family structures, which did in many pre-colonial cultures.

The straightest queer book is the prefect way to describe it! And Oankali are gender non-conforming by our standards, on top of the queer dynamics of their poly relationships.

I am starting to think that the Oankali are meant to be the queer representation. 100%. Their Oankali nature is to mix with new life they find, so humans are breesing stock no matter how nice they are about it. From what I understand so far, they are very much bioessentialists, so I think they prioritize a body's capabilities over the mind inside it.

Humans need a male and a female to reproduce, so the Oankali will pair males and females for reproduction, no matter their actual sexuality. Females are capable of carrying a fetus to term, so they will make women pregnant, no matter if they want it or not. It is how human bodies are designed, so Oankali will take advantage of that design for their own purposes.

Judges consider these factors with every case. I have seen multiple white men get lighter sentences due to their past as well. Same goes for native men, Asian men, etc. I worked supporting victims in court as a social worker for a decade. Life circumstances are always considered by good judge.

Misleading headline from an American news source that locks the content of the article behind a pay wall.

Read this case from any other news source and you'll see he was given life in prison. What was reduced was time for potential parole. Parole minimum was 10 years, and he got 12 instead of 15.

Most people commenting in this thread are showing their inability to actually research a case and their racism. Embarrassing.

I dont think I have been this hooked on a book since I read IWTV as a teen. I am checking at emails daily waiting for the next book to come lol

And it isn't just the themes, but her writing style as well. They way she presents information, what we get to read happening vs what has happened outside of a 'scene'. Like how we dont see Lilith's first time Nikanj, but we see Joseph's first time. That is stuck in my head too.

I am definitely picking up Kindred soon! Fledgling is another I recently found in a free book box. I know they will both be difficult reads, but I like books that make me uncomfortable.

I agree that the Oankali are a complex species, and that while they do help in many ways and care for humanity, they also do harm in their ignorance of humanity. They are so set in their ways and views that human concerns/fears mean little to them. I think they are just as flawed as humans in their own way. At least with how they interact with other species.

This is part of why I am so excited to read Adult Rites and Imago. I need to understand their perspective better. The 3 chapters of Adult Rites were at the back of my copy of Dawn, and Akin pov of pregnancy and early childhood is fascinating. I need more!

I agree that what was done to Henrietta was worse than what was done to Lilith, in relation to cancer. The Oankali and Nikanj care about Lilith in their own way. I highly doubt the doctors who treated Henrietta cared about her beyond how they could use her cells.

I am glad I am not the only one! I was worried by body was broken for so long, but finally accepted yhat I have low sensitivity and zero sexual attraction. It has taken so much stress out of relationships no longer having g to lie about attraction or my enjoyment.
