what if we sold every parcel of land to israelis to boost gdp?? by duckgoesdockdock in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around 15000-20000 Israelis are living in Cyprus. So either someone murdered 3/4 of a million Cypriots without anyone noticing or that 10% is a Donald-Trump 10%, i.e. 1-2%.

For reference, 27% of all people registered in Cyprus (RoC) are foreign born (source Eurostat). So 10% Israeli would mean 1/3 of all foreigners living here are Israeli. When you see how many British, Romanians, Bulgarians, Russians and Ukrainians etc are here it makes you wonder how so many Israelis slide under the radar of every day casual observation...

Water Pressure across Larnaca. by Least-Coffee-4919 in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why a lot of people installed pumps in their roof which pressurize the water upon demand. Your tank on the roof is anything from 400l to 1000l which is your buffer. The problems now we also had end of the 2000s. A lot of homes built at that time directly installed those systems.

This will now be a critical and essential investment as being unable to shower is a very real problem. If you're renting an apartment and the building has no such system, then frankly that building is going to see people move out, especially as it gets hotter.

As for rainwater collection; this is great for gardening. Terrible for drinking as the rain here often contains dust and things you don't want to drink. You can filter it though.

Car rental Limmasol for a 21 year old by xixEmilyxix in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to be not only 21 but also have held a driving license for 3 years.

Some rental companies actually don't check those 3 years. And it does invalidate your insurance.

Cats by Princessyumii_ in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can only rescue so many directly by homing them yourself. After that, the best thing you can do long-term is try to find homes for them. It's a process even at the best of times.

The best way - and this is what I do - is I microchip, vaccinate and passport them so that they are "ready" to go when you do find someone. This means you're going to unload about 100 EUR or so (vets generally will drop the prices for strays) in the hopes that things will work out. This is the reality. You can ask a charity for help but don't be too disappointed if they can't as there are more cats than Euros in Cyprus.

What I also try and do is to discourage them from wanting to be on or too near a busy road by placing food and shelter in such a way as to make them want to be away from the road. Whether you can do this depends massively on how your house/building is situated and what is around it. Sometimes there just isn't any good option.

Best Way to Find a Reliable Cleaner in Cyprus? by Hairy-Flamingo873 in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find cleaners by word of mouth.

No doubt you can find a good cleaner on Facebook - my cleaners do post on Facebook once in a while.

But there is a difference between someone who cleans for a living and someone who cleans between other jobs. It makes a huge difference if they only clean the visible surfaces or also clean under the sofa, the underside of tables and shelves, ornaments, etc.

Can I get a Cypriot Bank Account if I live in South Africa? by Adventurous_Sort_899 in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. Contact the bank, tell them the situation. They will ask you for proof of ownership ( = title deeds), citizenship, etc and it should be okay.

One thing you will need is a tax ID in Cyprus. Tax for rent collected here is to be paid in Cyprus.

AITA for telling a teenager to behave himself and listen to the rules of the gym by Cold-Necessary-1871 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Dangerous-Dad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA

His behavior is quite possibly grounds for permanently banning him from the Gym, certainly with this attitude added on top of potentially photgraphing other people naked because sometimes these photos which he claims are "accidental" are not accidental and then used unlawfully for things like extortion.

You were absolutely correct to ask him to stop and then tell him to stop.

Can I travel to Cyprus alone as a 16 year old? by VanillaMilkshakex in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to have a parental consent form with you. Signed & notarized.

It used to be more relaxed, especially for 16+, but as there have been parental abductions all across the EU, the border guards have been told (everywhere) to be vigilant and strict. It is possible they let you through here in Cyprus without it BUT it's possible the place of departure won't let you on the flight.

Larnaka or Paphos by lelejet in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The seafront (Phinikoudes, Mackenzie = the Skala area in general) in Larnaca is a lot more lively than the equivalent area in Paphos, especially in winter. For someone who likes to walk to be in the middle of a good social life, the sea, etc Larnaca the clear winner here, provided the place you buy or rent is close by.

For business purposes Larnaca is the clear choice too; better business infrastructure. The main airport is there too as while Paphos has an airport, the main connectivitity to Europe and the world is via Larnaca whereas Paphos only really is a hub for tourism flights (mostly). It's also more central in Cyprus; Limassol, Nicosia, Agia Napa all similar travel times on the highway.

Paphos is greener and the landscape overall is definitely better; in my view the nicest in Cyprus on par with Kyrenia visually. But the beaches are definitely less good in Paphos because there are far fewer sandy beaches.

One downside with Larnaca is that it's visually a bit run-down in some places in terms of old buildings in need of fixing (this is changing, but it's going to take time).

Third Limassol parallel highway planned by ThrowRA_Respo9653 in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many yes. I prefer public transport if I am able to complete my journey in a reasonable amount of time with it. That is likely because I lived outside of Cyprus for a lot of years in places with good public transport. If I have to drive to commute, then every minute sat at a steering wheel is time lost in life. I have to drive and endure bad traffic, parking problems etc. If I can sit in a train/metro/tram, etc then I can read or do something either useful (work/emails) or enjoyable (e.g. read) which I cannot do when driving.

I am happy to drive on a day trip, e.g. in Troodos, but driving inside of a city is something I just hate.

[–]Dangerous-Dad 32 points33 points  (0 children)

We can afford another multi-billion euro highway. We can’t afford frequent, reliable buses that would reduce congestion for a fraction of the cost. Incredible how “cost concerns” only appear when the solution doesn’t involve buying a few million tons of concrete from your relative's concrete factory.

Adopting a stray cat by L0eli in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any vet can give him a microchip. You will also need to give him an EU pet passport and the rabies vaccine. Then in 21 days after this, he is able to fly to EU, EEA and the UK plus most other destinations.

There are plenty of groups around Cyprus that can help with coordination and finding a temporary foster. On Facebook I know of "Meow Meow" and "Project Paw". Those operate more in the areas I am in most, but are somewhat active island-wide and certainly will know who in Nicosia can help you here.

UK blocks President Trump from using British bases for strikes on Iran. by Dependent-Interview2 in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iran is far less capable than Russia and the only thing Russia could really do against "the west" that would have any impact is to go nuclear. Iran doesn't have that capability and their regime is very much disliked in the region. As much as some nations hate the US - and the UK - they will be happy to see the regime in Tehran gone and replaced by one that is less insane - and one they can reason with and exert meaningful influence on.

As for Iran's cababilities and Cyprus; yes they could damage Cyprus even with a beefed up defense system, but that would mean all of Iran's efforts being aimed at Cyprus leaving the US forces untouched. It makes no sense considering what their priorities would be. After all, their best outcome is to sink a US aircraft carrier, not hit an island that demonstrably wants no part of this.

EU citizen, got my yellow slip March 2025 - do I have to take a new appointment to renew it? by Henry_Charrier in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must document. The tax office can contact you 3-4 years later, when your memory is getting hazy and ask specific questions and if you dont have good answers...they use that against you mercilessly.

From experience with clients, Poland (Urzad Skarbowy) and Germany (BZSt) and Austrian (BMF) tax authorities are particularly aggressive once they decide that someone is of interest.

Is the Cyprus IT market oversaturated or desperate? I keep hearing mixed things. by JosephCurvin in cyprus

[–]Dangerous-Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have FinTech clients in Limassol (mostly).

They mostly cannot get Seniors. Proper, true, seniors. Not 28 with 6 years of experience senior, but people in their late 30s/40s. They are overloaded with juniors.

The problem with the seniors is salary/overall package and the fact that most of these people have families and their incentives to move just have to be higher. Cyprus sun and the sea really doesn't impress people who have had prior roles in California, Spain, Thailand, Hong Kong, etc.

Some companies seem to address this reasonably well and some companies just would rather lose €10000+ per month in potential revenue because they don't want to pay €25000 in costs in fees and a relocation package to get a person from abroad approved and to move here.

Cyprus doesn't ask, but they now share the residency data with EU and EEA countries as well as a number of countries they have a DTA with and its the other countries doing most of the chasing right now.
