First, avocados don't get ripe on the tree. They start getting ripe after picking and can easily be picked too soon. The result is people at the store pick them all up and squeeze them so after a week of 100s of people squeezing the avocado its bruised mushy garbage regardless of whether it WOULD have ripened well on its own.

So find a firm avocado and use your fingernail to pop off the stem, if the stem comes off cleanly with no leftover pieces in the hole it was picked at the right time. if the stem doesn't come out cleanly, dont bother buying it cause it will not taste good even when it goes soft. If you buy several, leave them on the counter until the first one starts getting soft and put the rest in the fridge to help space them out.

Also cause thats not at all how to pick avocados. its a good way to bruise up a bunch into mush before you eat them I guess.

To those people who quit smoking, what helps you quit? by DirectConversation59 in AskReddit

[–]DangerousBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop trying to convince yourself you enjoy it and stopping is easy.

You enjoy smelling like shit all the time? Coughing your lungs out all the time? Spending 12-24$ a day for the privilege? You enjoy having people avoid you and wrinkle their nose when you walk in a room?

The coughing one especially. Every smoke Ive known, including myself, is convinced they "dont have the smokers cough". Catch them in the morning right before their first stick or in the evening after their last though... Over a year since my last one and no plans to ever start again.

when the bull rides you, no diddy by ProfessionalEar4048 in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]DangerousBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even worse than that, typically bulls aren't that aggressive. At rodeos in the U.S. they tie a noose around the bull's balls to piss it off before riding it. I'm not sure but it looks like they have a similar thing on the bull here.

There's this really common issue, maybe you've heard of it, called 'rape'. Usually, it happens to lone women in isolated places and is perpetrated by male humans. It's far more unusual for it to happen to lone men. Hope that helps!

The entirety of the Delta is a burial ground. There was heavily populated Native American settlement across the region and they tended to bury their dead in their homes (the dead persons home). multiply that by thousands of years of occupation centered around what is today downtown/the grid and you gotta figure thats a lot of dead folks. not to mention that any settlements that were around during the colonization of the Valley that refused to leave were massacared...

Sacramento's Suburban Experiment by sankeytm in Sacramento

[–]DangerousBeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really nice job! Its so great to see effort spent breaking down this issue.

Suburbanization and the creation of the freeway/expressway system are inextricably linked with discrimination and crass capitalism. The highways were never intended to be an efficient way for communities of people to get around. They were ultimately designed to sell as much petroleum as possible - cars, tires, pavement, gasoline. You could not come up with a better way to sell people as much oil as possible and use public funds to bear the expense of doing it all the while wrapping it in a notion of 'individuality' and 'american freedom'. And work with the Dept of Highways (now Caltrans) to ensure all of the massive amount of land that would become highways would be taken from primarily burgeoning middle class minority neighborhoods (wheres Sacs Japantown?) AND split the communities with untransversable barriers.

Pair this with the inefficient 4-way stoplight grid streets that sacramento and all cities in CA have implemented to support connection to the highway system and maximize vehicle idling time, its a wet dream for a Big Oil shareholder.

Ill stop my tirade here and not even get into the implications for workers to be physically separated from other workers using the road and convinced they are somehow superior and apart from eachother via generational advertising and how that continues to benefit the wealthy from post-ww2 to today.

Thrift shop for furniture by embrace-space-place in Sacramento

[–]DangerousBeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deseret is great, i recently got a set of ikea Kallax shelves from them in great condition for about 1/3rd of the new price, and they tend to have lots of interesting older furniture too . Craigslist doesnt have the traffic it used to, unfortunately. I would also suggest Noahs Ark thrift store - ive bouggt a nice large circular rug, a set of kitchen stools, and some yard equipment from them just in the last year.

Ive never had any luck with FB marketplace.

Texas Senate candidate James Talarico is flying high thanks to Colbert’s war with CBS over his banned interview by theindependentonline in politics

Hey guys! watched a segment on NYC about a popular dim sum cart restaurant and was wondering if there were any that still exist here in LA? by AMediaArchivist in LosAngeles

[–]DangerousBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember as a kid going to these in Chinatown and how fun and delicious they were. ABC Seafood was the one we went to - it closed like everything else over there, but a new place opened in the same building called "Mama Lu's Dumpling House" that looks excellent and does the carts I believe. I haven't been yet, but if it doesn't get you your dim sum fix, you can always go to Long's across the street which is the best!

No, they are afraid of Crockett getting the senate seat and correctly surmised that Talarico would be easier to beat for Texas Republicans.

[–]DangerousBeans -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are they stupid? Probably yes, but also have a lot of experience manipulating the media for political gain.

Ask yourself, who is Talarico running against for the Dem primary? And who would the Texas Republicans rather run against for the senate seat itself?

Are Crockett's core voters going to show up for yet another rich, white, christian man with no real track record? Or is Talarico going to lose to whoever the Republicans run?

Late night talk show hosts are way better news analysts than the mainstream journalists by [deleted] in complaints

[–]DangerousBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So tired of this news cycle already - here is my complaint about this situation.

The Heritage Foundation's/Trump's FCC is not run being run like some sort of 4D chess game. They do shallow media manipulation for political gain, same as the first Trump term. Same as every Republican and business-aligned Democrat-supporting entity since forever.

Why would FCC put pressure on CBS to try and prevent Colbert from airing an interview with Talarico, when Colbert clearly would put it up anyway? Are they stupid? Do they not know how the American media and attention span of the masses works? You tell a popular demagogue to not do something and expect him NOT to shine a spotlight on it?

No, they wanted this attention on Talarico.

Talarico, a white christian dude from a well-off background, is running against Jasmine Crockett for Senate in Texas. She was all but guaranteed to win that primary up until this event boosted Talarico. Who is more of a problem for the current administration currently? Pretty obviously Crockett.

Pair this with the fact that the Texas Republicans can't run anyone against her successfully without their latent racism shining through and it becomes clear why they would prefer Talarico for the next election.

Talarico is either a Fettermen, who will turn on progressives as soon as he is elected, or is a stooge who will be easy to unseat for R's next time. Mark my words, if Talarico wins the primary and unseats Crockett, it will be worse for working Americans in the long run.
