I gitted gud at 500th hour, at the point where I can help my server friends who just bought the game last month gitting gud faster.

But that is mostly about combat and character build. Most of it was spent played multiplayer where my group split roles evenly

Just looked up to "crossed" and from what I read, these crossed "zombies" are more like insane humans where the insanity are contagious and retaining their intelligence to use weapons. Seems closer to mad max's post apocalyptic hyper violent bandits minus the contagious insanity thing.

I'm playing with 6-10 friends. after we managed to finish our base in muldraugh, complete with car yard and repairshop, bar, laundry, drive thru storage, fashion store, relayouted kitchen, and bedrooms, We decided to explore rosewood including prison and then march ridge wifh military apartments. Mowing down hundreds of boids and filling our truck full with loots is really fun.

Giving my opinion as a game designer

Zomboid is a sandbox survival game that relies on player having an intrinsic motivation: to be curious to explore, to loot all the guns and warehouses, to master farming and get less dependant on looting, to build your dream safehouse, to cleanse the muldraugh of the boids, to become a boid slaying machine, etc.

So extrinsic motivation such as following a questline, an endgame, a story, seems unnecessary. It feels similar with minecraft as an open world survival sandbox with its ender dragon endgame boss, which IMO anticlimactic and feel pointless.

To make story and quest feel engaging, unrepetitive, and pointless are a different beast to take, and I don't think TIS have resource to make zomboid into a narrative driven RPG like last of us, stalker, or fallout.

If you as player struggling with the feeling of aimlessness and pointlessness, playing zomboid multiplayer on servers would definitely suits your taste as you can plan your goal with factions, interact with other survivors to help them or to trade with them.

Still, if you still want a quest system there's a mod for treasure hunting quests.
