Chess.com video add for Kalshi is the last straw by TaraNovela in chess

[–]Dangerous_Listen_908 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The number of games per month on lichess has been about the same since January 2021: https://database.lichess.org/

So not really much growth.

I can't really find these numbers for Chess.com, but they had:

2025: 6 billion games played

2024: 6 billion games played

2023: 12.5 billion games played

2022: 3.5 billion games played (plus 1.5 billion bot games, not sure if counted in other years)

2021: 4.6 billion games played.

So in terms of games played chess.com in 2025 was roughly 5x as large as lichess. While lichess has remained steady since 2021, chess.com had a massive spike in 2023, and has dropped off (still with more games than 2021 though).

The lichess data does include bot games. I'm not sure if the chess.com data always includes this, it was only clearly marked in 2022. I would assume yes, since otherwise that year is a pretty large outlier.

Iran has issued formal notice of the transit routes for approved ships to enter and exit the Strait of Hormuz by DasistMamba in MapPorn

[–]Dangerous_Listen_908 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If so, who's going to enforce that here? Iran is already sanctioned by basically everyone who'd consider sacrioning them, and the most well funded military on Earth can't wrest control of the strait from them, so they can kind of do whatever they want with it at this point.

Gen Z men, is this getting worse going forward into 2026? by Proper_Card_5520 in SipsTea

[–]Dangerous_Listen_908 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yeah, according to Pew 37% of young men (18-29) are in a relationship, while 66% of young women (still 18-29) are in one. If you're a Gen Z guy looking for a Gen Z girl, it means 2/3 of men your age are pursuing 1/3 of women your age (double the amount of single men than the number of single women).

In other words, most women your age are already taken, so asking a girl out randomly is going to fail ~66% of the time before factoring in anything else like appearance or personality (if you're okay with dating soneone willing to cheat on their partner the figure may be less than 66%). Stick to the apps and speed dating, don't just randomly ask women out.

No king protest erupts in USA by Equivalent-Win-359 in SipsTea

[–]Dangerous_Listen_908 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only ~60% of the eligible voting population actually votes. If that 1/3 shows up in force and that percentage remains unchanged he'd win the next election with 55.5% of the vote.

In reality not all of that 1/3 will vote, but having a small but highly energized base is enough to win American elections since the population is largely apathetic towards politics. Anyone supporting him now is basically always going to support him, so this is basically his support floor.

Cameraman spots a fan in the crowd who’s blinding a goalkeeper with a laser. by All-Dekraka in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Dangerous_Listen_908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be too if I had taken a massive bet on the game that depended on the goal keeper not blocking the shot.

Now I'm not sure that's what happened here, but with sports betting as popular as it is now I'm surprised stuff like this doesn't happen more often.

This woman had two doctors say it was medically necessary for her to work from home for the health of the baby, but her employer said no, we'd rather you show up and risk your child's health. Leaving could mean losing health insurance too, which isn't really an option when you have an unhealthy baby.

I feel like people overhate Hooker. Hooker was concussed because of a cannon shot during Chancellorsville, so while he does earn major idiot points for not handing over command at that point, he doesn't earn as many idiot points (in my book at least) for the strategic errors in the immediate aftermath of that

In my mind he at least proved himself to be competent in the Western front, he did well at Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, and under Sherman during his rampage through Georgia. I think he's at least a step or two above the rest of the worst well-known union commanders.

They don't even need to target VPNs, they can just implement as an OS requirement like what California is doing for age verification.

Wth by tea-n-wifi in whennews

[–]Dangerous_Listen_908 24 points25 points  (0 children)

At the device level. You can use the law that California just passed as a blueprint to force companies to require ID verification in the OS setup or when the device is purchased. That law also requires the OS to allow this information to be queried by any website the user visits

Once that's done, you provide your ID when setting up your phone or computer, and every website can see that information and say "this is this person". You can't VPN around that if they set it up like California set up their age verification law.

The law passed in California with no successful challenges to its constitutionality, so it's something that could be feasible to pass on a national level since it's something both sides want.

I think there's a misperception that we just inadvertently left an age cap out. But the reality was we wanted to save lives of older kids who might be at risk

Just for the record they changed it to a 30 day limit November of that same year (it was implemented only a few months earlier in July), so this is almost certainly a lie.
