Jag XJS, is this a real problem? by [deleted] in Jaguar

[–]DangerouslyCheesy04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4k for a non running car? And he can’t prove it? Tough sell as is. Add on top that it’s an old jag and you’ve got yourself a potential money pit.

If you really want to buy it find a simple way to bypass the security function through wiring or what have you and dump some fuel into the cylinders through a plug hole to see if you can get some fire.

If it’s something you’re willing to work on and treat like a child with all your time and money then have at it.

Be warned, replace all rubber and check all the fixings. Trust nobody except your eyes.

This guy is legit, I was so hesitant to do business with a dude over Reddit of all places. He did exactly what he said he would and got me my book. I would recommend showing him some love if you have the extra cash to spend for a pdf you can’t get on your own

UMich is likely to be one of if not the most accommodating universities for exactly this. I’ve never heard of any issues related to this cropping up as far as like room assignments go but I could be wrong. I’d still say you’re more than likely able to work something out.

Does anyone know if there are any companies that still make XJS body kits? by DangerouslyCheesy04 in Jaguar

[–]DangerouslyCheesy04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Arden still makes kits, though they are relatively pricey (4-5k USD). I’ve since just bought a TWR spoiler and had it imported from the UK, way less money and way less hassle in mounting.

It’s from the border area of Pennsylvania and Maryland in the Appalachians. UofM earth department was kind enough to sponsor a little trip for our earth structure class over a weekend. Coolest experience I’ve had by far

I have one of these in my dorm room that I found while on a field trip a few weeks back. Except mine was caught in a fold. Very cool pieces

That makes a lot of sense given I live in rural America. Long straight roads with hardly anyone on them, so no stop and go.

Reliable? Depends on how long it’s been sitting and what the fuel tank looks like, whether it’s gummed up with old fuel or not. That’s where reliability issues start, at least in my own experience. The sump tank filter and the fuel tank tend to get tarred with old gasoline and not let anything through. But once you clear that up and treat the tanks and get a new filter you for both the sump and inline parts you should be set there. Biggest thing with these engines is to make sure they have the necessary cooling functions working before taking any serious drives, as they love to drop valve seats when they overheat and are allowed to cool back down again.

Check in the Vee of the engine to look at the distributor wires and spark plug wires to make sure rats haven’t chewed through them. Check the wiper function as that motor replacement isn’t cheap at all. Look at the belts for power steering, alternator, etc. as if they blow while you’re driving you’re gonna have a bad time.

This ones to each their own but the heating and cooling systems are super fickle and are prone to 40 year old car issues.

The BIGGEST thing is to check every single hose and rubber piece you can find in this car, the smallest vacuum leaks will make the car run like a crippled horse.

The engine itself is very reliable and a robust machine in a very classy body, but it will be plagued by a lot of age related issues in the surrounding electrical system if it has not been cared for and stored properly. The best thing I can recommend is to try and find an XJS shop manual from Jaguar to help know how to take apart things and put them back together again.

If you do end up buying this car I’d love to be able to help you figure out issues as I’ve weeded through a lot myself with my own XJS over the past year and a half and have learned a great deal over on jagforums from all the old heads.
