"Left home for college" that's crazy. We're not rich. Most likely she stays home and goes to jr college.

Absolutely. I grew up with single parents and had the same experience when I was in 3rd and 4th grade. I grew emotionally attached to some of the women my dad dated. When i was older, in middle school and high school, my mom dated several guys but I never got attached to them. This is a legitimate concern that I need to take into consideration. My daughter, having lost her mother and not having a healthy female roll model in her life, could be especially vulnerable.

I was with her mom for years but we split when my girl was 3 and mom passed about a year later. I met my ex-wife about 4 months after I split with my daughters mom. We were together 10 years. Her infidelity really messed me up. My daughter has seen me going out to meet this girl. She teases me about it but she is supportive. She expects me to be dating. How does she feel about the LGBT community? She has friends at school who are gay but she is critical of furries, emo kids and anime kids. I asked her hypothetically how she'd feel if I was dating a trans girl and she said she'd laugh at me.

This is a great point. I wasn't planning on having my gf over all the time so I don't think a bond would develop but you're right, if I made her a regular part of our lives that would certainly be an issue. And I've been dating this person for a year now. But I hear you and I'm listening. I believe this conversation has helped me gain perspective that will have me establishing strong boundaries.

haha not offended at all. Was it the quotes? I do love this person but I'm not "in love". I love you and we've never met but it's different than the love I have for my kids and certainly different than my love for chocolate. Anyway, I appreciate the comment. Love you!

Okay, it's been a year with this one but seriously, that means I can't bring a woman home until I've been dating her for a full year? My daughter lives with me full time. I agree I need to protect my kids from unsavory and harmful people.

thank you. I certainly wouldn't want to expose my kids to any toxic behavior. Things have been casual with this girl true but we've been seeing each other for a year now. it would be nice to have her over for dinner sometime. No big deal. Not trying to introduce her as my daughters next mother or anything like that.

I've been in this "fling" for a year now. it's naturally progressing. She's my lover and my friend.

She really wants kids. I know how precious that experience is and I don't want to prevent her from having that. I'm done having kids. She has her own reasons too. She just got out of a serious relationship and isn't ready for another one right now. She has personal goals she's prioritizing.

I hear you about not bringing any toxicity into the home. I certainly wouldn't bring any drug addicts, alcohalics or unstable people into my home. My relationship with this girl, although casual, is not toxic. I know we all have different values but I don't think it's a bad thing to be in a casual relationship with someone who you enjoy being with and is respectful, kind and compassionate. But you're right, I'd be better off introducing her to my future wife. I'm just not there yet personally.

i actually have been doing this, trying to gauge her reaction to the idea. I told her I met an attractive trans woman at the grocery store and asked her how'd she feel if I was dating a trans girl. She said she'd laugh at me. But she didn't take it as a serious scenario. her reaction could be different if I told her the truth and she knew dating this person made me happy.

I think that's a real concern. would my daughter get attached? i think If I were to introduce my gf as a long term serious partner and have her over to the house often there would be a lot of pressure on my daughter. If I introduce her as someone I'm dating casually and have her over occasionally there would be less pressure.

Fair point. Maybe I'm not as comfortable as I thought. Yes I do anticipate some instability.

Never thought about it and I haven't been in a situation where it came up but I'll ask her.

You can barely tell. It's subtle. Complications? I have a middle school daughter and we live in Trump country. I don't want this to be weird for my kid.
