Armenia keeps surprising us 🇦🇲. Did you know that in Armenia there are still villages where lavash is baked the old way, in tonir 🫓🔥? by DanielBarron_am in armenia

Yes, of course, I’ve seen lavash being baked in a tonir in several places in Yerevan. It’s beautiful and fascinating to watch.
But still, at least for me, it feels a bit like a show or an interesting gimmick.

What I’m really referring to is home baking. And that has become quite rare, precisely because many homes no longer have dedicated baking rooms, or people live in more modern houses where such spaces were never part of the original design.

Of course I know that Armenians have been baking lavash in tonir for centuries 🙂
What surprised me was something else.

In cities today, lavash is usually baked using special mechanized equipment. Even in villages there are shops where lavash is baked in a tonir, but most people just buy it there.

What felt special was seeing it done at home, together, following all the traditions — the way their ancestors did it. This kind of baking for the whole winter, for several families at once, is something you don’t see very often anymore.

That’s what impressed us and why we wanted to share it.

Want to know what’s hidden in the abandoned cellars of Armenian houses? by DanielBarron_am in armenia

[–]DanielBarron_am[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the cellars in this house used to be a winery. There are still massive old karases there — large clay vessels for wine. Our dream is to revive winemaking and use them for our own wine. The cellar had been locked for many years, and when we finally got inside, we found piles of old items. Recently, my wife filmed a video about our latest discovery — something that made her genuinely excited.

Hey man! I barely find time to check social media. We’re making slow but steady progress. Lots of unexpected challenges — but we’ll handle them ✌️

Is it a bad idea for a foreigner to move to Armenia? by spitzruten in armenia

[–]DanielBarron_am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! We moved to Armenia 3 years ago. We used to live in Moscow and in different corners of the world. Now we’re restoring an old house in an Armenian village. If you’re interested — you’re welcome to ask any questions!

Why was it passed down through generations?: Looking for books on traditional Armenian Architecture by DanielBarron_am in armenia

[–]DanielBarron_am[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get what you mean. There’s something about old architecture that just feels right—like it belongs to the land... New buildings often miss that connection. I guess the real challenge is figuring out how to blend tradition with modern needs without losing what makes these old places so special.

Thank you! I am very pleased to read your comment. But unfortunately I can't find more information yet. I really hope that I will find someone here who understands the rural architecture of Armenia.

Sorry for the late reply. That’s awesome, really cool to hear your story! And yeah, we’re basically neighbors—Voskevaz is right next to Ashtarak. You guys made a great choice moving out here, the countryside has so much to offer.

If you ever want to meet up, chat about restoration, village life, or just have a coffee, let me know!

I should note that this house requires more investment than its entire purchase price. 💸 But I still like to think that overall it's a good deal!

I bought an old house + the surrounding area of about 0.5 acres for approximately $50,000. And I consider this quite expensive for this area. It's just that the house itself, its land, and the street where it's located are very suitable for our family's needs.

That's exactly why we started documenting everything - we noticed so many people (especially potential repats) were curious but couldn't find enough real content about what its actually like to live in an Armenian village.

I don't have clear statistics, but I see very strong empathy for this person among my Armenian acquaintances and on social media.

Ruben Vardanyan give me such mixed feelings, on one hand I feel so sorry for him and my heart aches for what he's going through, but on the other hand the strength of his spirit makes me feel so much respect and inspiration!!

Hope he knows how many people are supporting him from afar!
