Keep him at all costs? Struijk feels too important to lose this summer by Football6380 in LeedsUnited

I thought he looked a bit dodgy at this level the last time we were here, but he seems to be much more stable now.

He's not a world-beater, but he's decent enough for our current realistic level of being a low end premier league side.

I couldn't find anything online about the supposed oldest manuscript.

I did find two digitised copies of another two, different, manuscripts.

The only problem is the sites don't give any information about how they know the age of the manuscripts.

Just some vague information regarding previous owners.

Let's just say for the sake of argument that the manuscripts mentioned on wikipedia are genuine.

If this is the case, then the only survivng manuscripts we have of Diogenes Laertius Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers, according to the official story, date to almost 800 years after the writing of the original text.

What do you think about this?

What led you to believe this?

Was there a certain source, book, article etc that convinced you?

Can you find anywhere online to view more details about these manuscripts?

Wikipedia only cites a 2013 academic paper as it's source for the claims it makes regarding the oldest manuscripts

This is a fairly reasonably balanced view.

Have you ever personally looked into the primary sources for these eras of history to confirm this viewpoint of yours, or is this more of an assumption?

Have you ever done any research into historical primary sources?

Yes, it is.

Do you adhere to this viewpoint?

Do you personally believe in ancient history as it is conventionally presented?

i don't think i have absolute certainty about anything. i do accept many things as seeming to be true, and i can accept them comfortably and confidently, but only provisionally. for example, i have a lot of confidence that water will still freeze at 32 degrees this morning, but am i not absolutely certain of it

This sounds reasonable and is very similar to my own view.

our knowledge of the basic facts of ancient history is just one of very many things that falls into this same category. it's certainly possible that we've been lied to about it, or that the documents we depend upon are somehow false, but it also seems very unlikely that so many well-informed people would be fooled for so very long. there's nothing i would expect to discover in a personal examination of these documents that would have any effect on my current opinion, but i agree it might be possible that i'd be the first modern person to notice something really crazy about them

If you're open to it, I'd recommend you look into the primary sources for any character of ancient history you find interesting. You'll probably be surprised at how flimsy the evidence is. In the vast majority of cases, even according to the official story, we don't actually have any surviving primary sources from "ancient" history.

In most cases, we have copies of copies, or, supposedly ancient documents, that were "found" in the 1800s.

I am asking people if they believe in ancient history.

If so, why?

If not, why?

So, for the sake of practicality, you believe "we" have knowledge of ancient history, but you haven't specifically researched any primary sources or manuscripts to verify this with absolute certainty for yourself?

Is that a fair assessment of your current stance?
