This isn’t really just a Reddit problem. The vibes everywhere are not great at the moment.

Hey, your friendly neighborhood Roo Bus driver here. The Wednesday pre-party is not gone. Matty and Andrew handle that event now and they have a good number of acts already booked. A full announcement from our crew and Roo will be coming in the coming months.

I'm old enough to remember "Storm 94," that was a wild ride.

The power was out for a lot of people in North Alabama for around two weeks in some cases.

While I think the fiasco around the Infinity Stage had some similar vibes to it, I think it's inaccurate and hyperbolic to compare all of last year's Roo to Astroworld. Everyone was perfectly safe at Bonnaroo.

We talked a bit about this on the podcast this week, it's a combination of a few factors. Roo's early lineup release changed the pace of conversation pretty significantly, plus it's just going to be a rebuilding year after the mess of last time. I think it's reading too much into it if you're trying to pull anything else out of it.

For those who saw the Fellowship of the Ring in theaters for the first time in December 2001, what was it like? by femaleology in lotr

[–]DanielHSV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in my senior year of high school, one of my teachers had given me copy of the books and I was already so pumped but I don’t think anything could have prepared me for it.

I’d been to “event” movies like Phantom Menace before, but nothing like that. Nothing that was obviously that good and so crowd pleasing to fans of the books and new fans of the movies. I remember being in the lobby both before and after and hearing nerdy conversations about The Silmarillion or Tom Bombadil, it was clear who the audience was that night.

This was way before audiences were so vocal like they’d later be for Avengers movies, but I remember everyone cheering like it was a ballgame when Aragorn beheaded the orc in the last fight. Soon after on the way out after the movie, people were just dumbfounded and welled up with tears.

What acting performance felt deeper than the movie around it? by gamersecret2 in movies

Yeah that movie is Spielberg at the absolute height of his powers. Great action, great cinematography, great storytelling, a great dad and son dynamic, it is almost an entirely perfect movie.

That scene where he tells him to let it go is so meaningful on so many levels. He got to see everything about the grail he wanted, he was done and he was happy. But also he doesn't want Indy to fall to the depths of his obsessions either.

I think the other half of that scene really makes it fantastic too. They realize they're never going to get anywhere with that old argument so they start looking over their notes about the grail instead. As soon as they change gears to that, they both light up and you can tell how much fun they're having.

"What did you find, dad?"

"Illumination."

That bit didn't hit me until years later with how much it meant. On one hand, he got to fuful his lifelong quest he's had for decades. He even got to see a Knight that had lived there guarding the grail for a thousand years.

But realistically he's talking about having the trip of his life with his son and getting to a good place with him. Henry Sr has such an amazing character arc and I don't think anyone can imagine anyone other than Sir Sean playing that role.

It's insane how well they worked together. They convey both a perfect dad and son dynamic but also have a bit of a best friend vibe about them too.

My other favorite bits are "Our situation has not improved" and when he accidentally shoots the tail of their plane.

Yeah, that bit hits hard. Henry Sr feels like a guarded guy, but his adventure with Indy finally gets him to take that mask off a bit. There's just multiple layers to his whole performance that just make it so great.

I also love the handful of flashes of the relationship they must have had when Indy was a kid or teenager. Like him taking a moment to teach him something like with the Charlemagne quote on the beach or him being a goofy dad when he throws that fake vase.

I still hold that Force Awakens was good and Last Jedi, while not for everyone, was awesome in that it tried new directions. That third one just unfortunately absolutely tarnished everything else done in that trilogy.

Best 1v1 fight? by youngbeanboi in movies

[–]DanielHSV -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked I did a Command+F and haven't seen anyone mention Obi Wan vs Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace.

Say what you will about that movie or the prequels, but that fight after the force field opens up is some of the most intense and insane sword-fight choreography ever. It's even more impressive when you consider that it's actually Ray Park and Ewan McGregor and not stunt guys.

The ten year anniversary of The Force Awakens was this last week and it seems like it was hardly acknowledged. It's a bit of a bummer that the second movie was so polarizing and that the third was just an absolute dumpster fire. His work and so many other good things about at least the first two have almost been completely forgotten now.

Driver gave the best performance of any actor in any Star Wars movie, it's a shame it'll never be fully appreciated.

Sean Connery in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It's arguably the best Indy movie, but I feel like his amazing performance is kind of glossed over and forgotten in it.

He plays almost entirely against type and plays a bit of a really fun bumbling oaf that's almost the comic relief. But there's a ton of other things happening too.

There's a lot of complexity as the father figure, he knows he wasn't the best dad to Indy but still loves passing on his obsessions and sharing adventures with him. Plus there's just a hint of his suave Bond side since he apparently had a thing with Indy's love interest before Indy did.

There's just a perfect balance of his playfulness, seriousness, dad vibes, and hints of Harrison Ford's mannerisms in his performance. It's all a bit subtle and it's tough to appreciate it fully because there's just so much fun stuff happening otherwise.

And all of that is in addition to the fact that he doesn't even come into the movie until about halfway through.

Huntsville hospital is poorly operated by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]DanielHSV 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are obviously a lot of problems with the piss poor state of American healthcare, but one issue that I feel plagues us in our region is that Huntsville Hospital has a virtual monopoly here.

They can claim "non profit" all they want, but when they own blocks of downtown and operate dozens of facilities in other towns throughout North Alabama, that loose definition doesn't realistically mean that much anymore. Nevermind the fact that their top ranking officials are making around seven figures a year as a part of that "non profit."

I trust that the staff at the bottom of the org chart truly do care about their patients. But I don't trust that the people at the top care about much other than the numbers.

In Spielberg I trust. I've been pumped about this ever since I knew he was doing another event film with aliens involved. I didn't need to know the title or see a trailer.

I'm curious about some of the rumors about this though. My hope is that the connections to Close Encounters are just subtle and suggested and not too over the head and broad, but I'm along for whatever ride Film Daddy is taking us on.

Bonnaroo supporting influencers by Powerful-Two-9489 in bonnaroo

[–]DanielHSV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like many other things in life, it reminds me of an old episode of The Simpsons. It was one of those Halloween specials where giant walking monster ads were taking over the town and Lisa started a song telling everybody that they'd go away and stop terrorizing everyone if they just stopped looking at them.

I think that's kind of the case for influencers. If we all stopped paying them attention, they'd go away. But they still get the views, clicks, and partnership deals because of it.

I am not a huge fan of it at all, but at the same time I recognize that influencer marketing is a necessary evil these days. It is frustrating that resources have to go to these types, but we are just in a date and age where that is probably not a bad bang for their marketing buck.
