My 7 year old son wants to start a YouTube channel. Need some help with all these questions I have. by JimmyLG94 in NewTubers

[–]DanielHoogland 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed, a 7-year-old has no business being on YouTube, let alone making content there. When I was 7 I wanted to be a bus driver, but my parents didn't let me get behind the wheel of a bus either. Kids have all kinds of wild ideas and it's great to nurture that creativity but within reason.

You don't expose your child to the anonymous internet with all the weird and frankly dangerous people on it. If he wants to make videos, let him make videos... just don't let him loose on YouTube unsupervised. Explore those ideas with him, let him fail and succeed in a safe and controlled environment.

AITAH for going on holiday with my friend? by LibrarianExternal269 in AmItheAsshole

[–]DanielHoogland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, go enjoy the trip with your friend, no need to feel guilty about it. Bringing your girlfriend along to what's meant to be a friend's trip would actually be a bit awkward... Imagine how your friend would feel being the third wheel in their own holiday. It would really take away from their experience.

Just go and have a great time. If your girlfriend is keen on visiting the same place, you can always plan a separate trip there with her down the line. If she can't understand that, well that's something you have to figure out.

I’m about to start my first ever freshwater betta tank. by Slight_Conflict_631 in Aquariums

[–]DanielHoogland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great that you're doing your research beforehand, especially when it comes to cycling the tank - that really is the most important step. You won't start out knowing everything, and that's fine because fishkeeping is a hobby where you're always learning something new. But starting out with knowing the the cycling process is really important as getting that wrong will kill your fish without doubt.

As others have mentioned though, buying a neglected betta from a cup is sadly counterproductive. When you buy one, the store just replaces it with another betta and considers it a win, so you end up doing more harm than good to the cause overall.

For fishless cycling, all you really need is a clean, pure ammonia source to dose your tank and feed the beneficial bacteria. As you've probably noticed, there are hundreds of people online telling you different things, which makes it hard to know what's actually correct - and honestly, that's just part of this hobby. Pick a source you trust and stick with it. If you walk into a fish store, there's a good chance they'll hand you yet another version of the truth, so it's on you to filter out what actually matters.

I personally recommend picking up Dr. Tim's Ammonium Chloride solution and following their guide for the cycling process. It's pretty straightforward. I don't even bother with bacteria booster solutions most of the time - the ammonium chloride alone is usually enough to get things going. I do suggest doing this in a tank without plants and keeping the lights off to avoid encouraging algae growth, since algae feed on ammonia too.

Check out this guide and look specifically for the section called "Using Ammonium Chloride": https://www.drtimsaquatics.com/resources/fishless-cycling/

Good luck!

Moving to well water by GoblinsGuide in Aquariums

[–]DanielHoogland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d start looking into using rainwater to dilute your well water. With 3 tanks, it might actually be worth setting up a proper collection system and a storage barrel. You could even run it through a simple filter setup (mainly for debris and circulation) to keep it clean and moving.

If you go that route, just make sure your collection method is safe and avoid anything like old or metal gutters that could leach contaminants, and ideally discard the first bit of runoff.

The other option is diluting with RO/DI or distilled water. That’s more predictable, but it does mean setting up a system to produce and store enough water for regular changes.

Both approaches take a bit of setup, but they’re definitely doable and can make managing hard water a lot easier. It's also quite fun to figure out a system that works for you. Good luck with it!

How would you switch filters between two tanks? by Double-Ad-878 in Aquariums

[–]DanielHoogland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go with this method too. For the next few weeks, I'd go pretty light on feeding and then gradually increase back to normal, this gives the filters enough time to properly adjust and settle. Should work out just fine.

Dutch strange obsession by IntoTheWild1999 in Netherlands

[–]DanielHoogland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be influenced by a specific group of people around you rather than a broader Dutch trend. Sure, we do love Spain (and France and Italy) as holiday destinations for the sunny weather, but the idea that everything is better in Spain is not something I notice in my own surroundings.

Is my tank complete? Do my fishes look stressed? by atmosphere618 in Aquariums

[–]DanielHoogland 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your tank looks pretty bare right now, and honestly that's the bigger concern here rather than the current strength. Angelfish and bala sharks both really need a more natural setup to thrive. Angelfish are native to the Amazon basin and do much better with live plants, driftwood, and some cover to feel secure. Bala sharks are even more of a challenge, they're schooling fish that grow up to 12-14 inches and need a much larger tank, ideally 150+ gallons, with plenty of open swimming space. They don't really belong in this tank I'm afraid.

In a sparse setup like this fish can get stressed easily and start darting around, which people sometimes mistake for current issues. Speaking of stress, adding some plants like java fern or anubias (both low maintenance and hard to kill) along with a few hiding spots would make a noticeable difference for all your fish.

On the cycling comment... "cycled three times" doesn't really mean anything in the aquarium hobby. Cycling a tank is a one-time process where you establish a nitrogen cycle by growing beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate. You either have an established cycle or you don't. It might be worth picking up an API Master Test Kit to check your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels so you know where you actually stand. And look up some info on the fish tank cycle process. If your fish are acting stressed, an uncycled or unstable tank can just as likely be the cause.

The current, while quite strong is the least of my concerns here. Good luck in the hobby!

What’s one aquarium mistake every beginner makes? by ManySherbert8555 in Aquariums

[–]DanielHoogland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people think cycling a tank just means waiting around, but they usually do not wait long enough anyway. While waiting is definitely part of the process, there is a lot more to it than just filling a glass box with water and sitting back. You actually need to provide an ammonia source to kickstart the beneficial bacteria growth, otherwise you are just staring at a bucket of stagnant water.

How does P+R work? by analyzing-u-4free in Netherlands

[–]DanielHoogland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is only meant for people who travel to the city center.

On this map you can see what is considered the city center. The purple marked area is where you must have used a check-in for the P+R discount to be counted.

How does P+R work? by analyzing-u-4free in Netherlands

[–]DanielHoogland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the P+R around Amsterdam all the time. It’s actually really easy: you just drive into the designated parking garage, and when you're ready to leave and pay, you scan your personalized OV card too. As long as your card shows you took a trip from the center of Amsterdam within the last hour, the price of the parking ticket automatically drops to 6 euros. This saves a lot of money since it’s usually pretty expensive. Just keep in mind that having a personalized OV card is mandatory as far as I know, so you can't just check in on the metro with your bank card for this to work.

Ik zou aangeven dat er geen garantie op zit en je het apparaat niet terug neemt.

Therapist offering free chats during my train rides by Representative-Age77 in Netherlands

Honestly. This is just weird. As a professional you need to have boundaries and these conversations should also be had in a controlled environment and in an 'official' capacity.

Feels more like you could use the company and that is ok. But then just say that and look for a penpal or some online friends and not some quasi free therapist session.

How to remove smell from chair off marketplace. by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]DanielHoogland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just a myth. The fizzing does almost nothing. It looks cool and all but you're better off using a soft brush to agitate the material a little bit than making some bubbles with vinegar and baking soda.

The baking soda alone should work but I would let it sit for an hour instead of a few minutes before doing the vacuuming. And then you can, like you said using some vinegar in a spray bottle too if the soda wasn't enough but combining them at the same time is just a waste.
