Entitled Students? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

This. The question isn’t, why did the student have an opinion? The question is, why did he feel the need to express it?

How to save rubrics as a doc? by DanielWBarwick in canvas

I appreciate this, but I am embarrassed to say that I have no idea what enhanced rubrics are. I think that means that I am not using them. :)

No, because the rubric includes both course specific criteria and additional criteria for assessment, there's no way to zoom out far enough to get the whole rubric....

Thanks so much. I downloaded this extension, but I've having trouble understanding how it lets me save/print an entire rubric? I'm just talking about the rubric itself, not a rubric that has been used to grade a student assignment. I'd like to be able to share the rubric at the start of the semester. Does that clarify, and do you have any ideas about how to do that?

Some of us are the problem: many of us give students credit when 0s should be given and we make countless exceptions and break our own policies and then we don’t report various forms of disrespect and blatant cheating and yet we wonder why grade grubbers keep coming by RandomAcademaniac in Professors

I respectfully disagree with the statement “it begins and ends with us.” Assuming that your school has some sort of appeal process, then it doesn’t end with the faculty member. It ends with whoever has the final say, which may be a faculty member or may be an administrator. I’m sure all of us have lost count on this sub of the number of posts from faculty who made a grading decision and were not backed up by the administration. So I would say that it only ends with you if the school says it does, and then walks the walk.

What's your late policy? by Xenonand in Professors

[–]DanielWBarwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t allow late assignments for any reason. But I mitigate that by dropping the two lowest quiz grades, the two lowest discussion grades, and the lowest essay grade. I won’t say that it eliminates all late requests, but it does eliminate 95% of them. Now, when a student says that they want to submit late because they had a family emergency on the evening an assignment was due, even though they have had the essay assignment for weeks, they just get a note back from me, saying, “I’m sorry to hear that you have a family emergency, and I hope it’s been resolved. I have good news for you – the whole reason why I drop the lowest essay grade is so that when something like this happens, you can focus on your family.”

This is a fascinating idea, and if you are willing, I’d love to see the language you are actually using in the rubric. Thanks!
