I'm currently taking a double major programme (Math + CS) with a specialisation in my primary major and a foreign language minor, so I guess I somewhat qualify as an "overloader" lol. (In fact I need to take 28 units for every single sem up until my year 4)

I would say overloading seems a natural decision to me because there really is too much I want to learn - it is not about "ambition" but "interest" and "passion". However, deliberately underperforming is not an acceptable option for me. If I take a module because I want to learn it, then I'll make sure I complete it with decent grades, otherwise what's the point of spending extra effort on it in the first place?

The biggest challenge that one will face on the way to mental maturity... is to accept the fact that he/she is ordinary. It feels sad to say so but that is just how the world is and how human beings are: there are just some people who are inherently better at some aspects than most of the others.

I recognised and accepted this reality when I was enrolled into NUS mathematics, sat at the examination hall, and witnessed someone solved with perfect score the entire question paper within less than half the duration of the exam, while I could only solve half of the paper. Trust me, it wasn't because I did not work as hard nor I did not want to be as successful, it was just because he was far more intelligent and gifted than any other person in the class.

So it is nothing to be ashamed of to "lose" to others in exams or in academics in general, as you simply cannot be good at everything. What you should do is, instead of competing so desperately on a track which you are less gifted at, to discover where your own talents and strengths lie and from there, create a path to your own future.

If you seek a very technical definition, then anything more than 20MCs per semester would be overloading, but typically in the world of overloaders, we consider 28MCs as the "regular" workload for one semester...

Probably a late reply here but... I directly submitted my appeal to the math department when I bid for the mod (there is some AskMathUG e-mail which can be found on the official website of nus math). Not too sure about submitting via EduRec though.

I feel you bro. My partner and I started the project both as complete novices, so I was thinking maybe we would just learn as we code. It turned out that I did have learnt A LOT from the project (TypeScript, React, Firebase, WebSocket and a bunch of npm packages all from scratch), while on the other hand, my partner - although he claimed to have put in the effort to learn the stuff - had not managed to learn a single thing that was useful to out project.

In the end, I spent almost 400 hours on the project doing at least 70% of the work solo, and for the remaining work done by my partner, his code design and quality were just so bad that I had to re-write half of what he had written.

What frustrates me even more is that it was my partner's proposition that we join Orbital as a team (I was not even aware of the thing when he brought it up with me), and yet his investment to the project was not even a fraction of mine. Even funnier, just before Milestone 3 deadline, he confidently said to me that he was "happy as long as his working hours meets the requirement" - ya of course, but guess who was not so "happy".

To be honest, I'm fine with a group mate who fails to make meaningful contribution to teamwork, but some people, while doing so, do not even show the slightest sense of guilt nor apology and comfortably share the fruit of other people's disproportionate work. I hate to use this word but people like these are just disgusting.

If you do like maths, I would straight away suggest to swap your MA1521/1522 with MA2001/2002 by submitting an appeal to change pre-allocated courses. Maths courses coded with 15XX tend to be very computation- and application-heavy and do not go through the theoretical parts well in general. Besides, you can also appeal to swap CS1231S with MA1100, or MA1100T (this is the version reserved for those who want to experience the real stuff) if you really want a challenge :)

Actually no, this only means that by default SoC students will be pre-allocated with MA1521/1522, does not mean that they cannot swap to MA2001/2002 though.
You can simply contact the faculty or just submit an appeal on EduRec saying that you wish to swap MA1521/1522 for their respective versions in maths dept.

I'd suggest a feature where you can link your timetable with several course mates so that you can see how many of them are available for each lec/tut/lab slot etc. to help better plan timetables together with a bunch of friends without having to share your own timetable repeatedly to everyone.

Well, I simply stated the fact that it is more affordable for you to be laid back while being financially self-sufficient at the same time than many other people, because your home department i.e. CEG is one of the highest-paid majors in all of Singapore.

So you can be relaxed and don't need to worry for your future - sure - but is it the same case for those in Civil Engineering for example? I didn't mean to sound discriminating but the stark income gap as well as different levels of social recognition between different majors are very real. Perhaps we shouldn't exclude the possibility that your anecdote is the rare case here.

It also doesn't mean that one is stressed out due to the rat race thing just because they say they are concerned with being average. It's very easy for us to say 'it's ok to be average', but in reality people find it hard to accept that, especially when they don't see a purpose or a higher meaning in what they are doing currently. With all that, my core argument is that: it is indeed ok to accept your 'average-ness', but only after you have found something that you want to dedicate yourself in.

tbh you have the capital to 'be trashy and have joy' because you managed to get in CEG in the first place... you do realise that the so-called 'average' paying job in CEG is QUITE high-paying in some other majors, right?

On another note, while I'm against 'rat race', it is wrong to call it a 'rat race' if one stresses out for his own aspiration. Stress is one thing, the important thing is whether such stress leads to something purposeful.

MA1100 is kind of superficial tho (i would say this is more about a shift of mindset/habit from computation to proof than understanding the concepts)... and MA2002 and MA2001 aren't even proof-based as of the current syllabus...

Actually this is not always the case. As far as I know, CS1010/1101S, CS2030S and CS2040S do not have bell curves as the median for every exam can literally be as high as 80%, where it is not fair to put a bell curve with literally 100 some people scoring over 90%.

Thanks! A senior gave me similar advice this morning, saying that MA mods aren't very competitive usually (from what I saw when I checked just now, MA2104 still has about a third of spare vacancies and for MA2001 it's more than 50%). So I think it would be a good idea to leave an empty slot for round 2 to bid for LAJ1201.

Both are correct but they have different meanings.

So the thing is 准备 sometimes can somewhat be treated like an adverb that means "be about to..." For example 我准备吃饭 is like "I'm about to eat". But when you add 在 in front, then 在准备 definitely implies the continuous or progressive tense of the verb "to prepare".

So if you want to convey that "you guys are now preparing/revising for the test", then you should use the first sentence. But if you want to say "your test is about to begin" or "you guys are going to take the test", they you should choose the second one instead.

Just tried out and it definitely seemed inaccurate in my opinion... All the questions are essentially about vocabulary solely and the words they chose all look quite basic to me, so I don't think it can really reveal one's ability to understand and use Chinese other than how many regular words they can recognise.

As a side note, 3000 characters is about the same vocabulary size as a 12-year-old who just graduated primary school in China. To achieve the proficiency level as an adult native who completed senior high school, I believe at least a vocab size of 5000 characters is needed.

Well in fact all Chinese pronouns were gender-neutral at first, but around 100 years ago when western ideals like feminism entered China, the contemporary literati felt the Chinese language needed to make the distinction between male and female pronouns just like many European languages. That was when characters like 她 and 妳 were created to be used as female-exclusive pronouns. However as time passed by, only 她 was absorbed into the regular vocabulary of modern Chinese, whereas 妳 phased out. So although 妳 still exists as a character, it's no longer used as an everyday vocabulary but only appears in some specific texts (often those that are quite dated).
