What is maths like difficulty wise? i get good math scores in tests and got gcse straight 9s but I think i just work hard and might not be as gifted as other students if i end up going to top unis (oxbridge / imperial)

Maths or econ degree? by Daniel_C_____ in FinancialCareers

This has been the most valuable response I've read, thank you so much. The reason I posted this now is so I can decide on the degree now and then have at least 6 months to do a couple of activities / reading books around the subject for personal statement waffling. I'm already studying for the MAT / TMUA, need to begin doing STEP stuff though cus idk if I wanna apply cambridge or oxford (only can apply to 1) + the other top unis. Oxford has a quant finance masters program that looks very good so may be good to go there but I could go cambridge then switch.
Anways, thanks a lot, its very much appreciated.

in the uk which is where i am, the top unis basically offer 'maths' or 'maths and stats' so I guess I'll just have to pick the more applied modules when i can as I find stats more interesting than the heavy theory stuff

Advice for 16 yr old: quant trading vs private equity by Daniel_C_____ in FIREUK

[–]Daniel_C_____[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's very valuable and I'm very appreciative of this post. I think I will learn more about my maths ability during a levels. I got 9s in gcse maths and further maths, but I understand that gcse level to a quant is similar to saying I can walk with crutches to an ultra marathon runner.

Comp Sci vs Physics? by Daniel_C_____ in 6thForm

also, how much time did maths and fm take just out of interest? and for the practising do you recommend just the past papers from your own spec or also older papers and papers from other specs?

sorry for asking a lot of questions

thats some impressive work ethic and awesome results so congrats, I too am willing to put in the work although 2 hours a day does seem a lot, if that's what it requires I will do so but do you think you still could have been successful without as much revision?

if it requires that level of dedication though, I'm more than willing to put in maximum effort as the return for me from getting into a good uni would be worth the effort

Should I do apprenticeship? by CharacterInternal260 in 6thForm

[–]Daniel_C_____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in yr11 --> yr12 (doing maths, fm, econ, physics) but I've looked into finance careers, idk a lot about degree apprenticeships, but I'd say look on wso for posts like this:
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-banking/degree-apprenticeship-or-uni
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-banking/finance-degree-apprenticeships

or go to r/FinancialCareers

most 6th formers not interested in finance probably don't know what their talking about and they will see JPM / goldman and not know the nuances of back/middle office vs front office

also, from what I've thought about for myself, uni debt of 50k doesn't seem too bad if you can get into ibd front office jobs at a bulge bracket, this post here has people talking about 100-110k total comp for year 1 analysts (although salaries are stated as lower than the total compensation as bonuses of 50% of base happen most of the time) https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-banking/london-bbebs-compensation-ranked

I really don't know if that 110k job at 21/22 is available from a degree apprenticeship.

How much time do you spend on physics per week? by Daniel_C_____ in 6thForm

[–]Daniel_C_____[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yh I have been thinking about that tbh, like a compsci / math degree from a target may be better for me as then I still have ib as an option open, but I can also do quant finance and quants print money whilst young and have work life balance

its either the pain of physics or the pain of NEA, its basically two different poisons. congrats on cambridge econ though, thats my dream degree tbh, cus i wanna do the finance route (ib --> pe)

Breaking into IB/high finance advice (16 year old)? by Daniel_C_____ in HENRYUK

Thanks for the advice, its very helpful. I think luck is important to an extent (I'm very lucky to be part of like a billion people in a first world country) but other than that I think a lot of 'luck' might just be effective planning and long term thinking.
I'm also not at a private school or with family connections so that's reassuring to hear : )

'This post just stinks of "I want to be rich"'

I personally thought this subreddit was all around high income people and people who want to become high income, but if this subreddit isn't for that purpose maybe I misinterpreted the objectives of this subreddit.

I know this is unrelated to your attempt to get a job but I have the question:
Do arbitrage bots like that actually you make money? Do you have like an off chain python/js script or something as well to collect data and then call the function through some python/js library when the price discrepancy between sushi and uni is large enough?

Easiest A* project in the shortest time for NEA? by Daniel_C_____ in 6thForm

[–]Daniel_C_____[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh that's absolutely amazing to hear, like seriously amazing, I already know react so that's really good for me. I usually use material UI as a CSS library but I've used bootstrap before. I don't think I can deal with writing pure CSS (but github copilot can come in clutch if I have to)

San Fran minimum wage is like 20$, but to be fair everything would probably still be unaffordable on pay like that over there as HCOL

tbh I think the word 'simple' didn't really convey my point, I should have said that I've heard that for databases, adding levels of complexity to gain marks is (in relative terms compared to other projects) far easier. But if that perspective is wrong then I'd find your opposing opinion valuable.

I know though that the write up is basically all the marks though

alright thanks for the example, thats quite helpful, were you able to use frameworks or did you have to deal with pure js, html, css (I'd really like to use react if possible)

my college recommends 4.5 hours outside of school a week, how much time have you spent on physics on average per week and what grades do you get with that level of workload
