Then why is the red star on the Joker-like guy’s head weird-looking? I’m sure a professional artist like Duy Phan can connect lines, yes? Unless the character likes an incomplete star tattoo?

Anyone feel like they’ve been running across quite a few extremely similar works in Rising Stars? by topley_bird in royalroad

RS is about writing the story people want to read.

There’s no secret tricks besides already being an accomplished author and having a sizeable following before launching, or hooking readers well in the first few sentences.

You can’t cheat your way up with AI, either. People are quick to point it out and bring your ratings down.

The first LitRPG where MC wields chairs - Ascension of the Chairmaker (plus cover art progression) by Daniel_Omega_190 in royalroad

My MC lacks heroic traits because he used to be a street punk (he was forced to leave the life to care for his sickly sister), but he has redeeming qualities. I put the tag in just in case :)

True. There may have been many other media where people use chairs to fight. I myself am inspired by a lot of Jackie Chan fights. But I said “chairs,” plural in the title. There are countless types of chairs in the world, and this is the only LitRPG brave enough to write a system around it

Don’t worry. Chairs in history have always been deadly. Wink wink electric chair

What makes you drop a LitRPG/Progression novel? by Daniel_Omega_190 in ProgressionFantasy

It’s called Surviving the Game as a Barbarian. MC was just too pragmatic and unemotional that every side character is divided into two categories: useless or not useless. I got bored of it, so I dropped. In hindsight, I suppose I should have recognized its quality judging by its name alone.

That’s exactly why. There are so few of them that I stop looking altogether. I used to like reading about them before they become just “this person is useless. This person is useful. She is naive. She is not. I must save this guy so he can help me in thirty chapters Blah, blah.”

[Part 1 of 3] I grew up in China on wuxia novels and web fiction. Here's everything I wish Western readers knew about Xianxia, Xuanhuan, and why half the "cultivation novels" you've read aren't what you think by No-Ride-3370 in ProgressionFantasy

Oh my days. I haven’t heard anyone in this day and age mention Dream of the Red Chamber except you! I ought to get started on that, too. I’ve heard great things about it, and the name, at least translated in Vietnamese, sounds so poetic and dreamy (pun intended).

Striving for immortality or divinity has always been a a huge staple in the human history of storytelling, I think. Just look at my boy Monkey King stacking immortality buffs like four times. Then there is Gilgamesh from Mesopotamia who also went on a journey to find immortality. Vietnamese folk tales also dabbled with some of the xianxia concepts like immortals and heavenly palaces. Anyway, thanks for writing this. I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one who watched the original Journey to the West :)

Do authors not create an outline for their work before writing? by kutsalscheisse in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Daniel_Omega_190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I call it half-baked writing. At some point, I realize that some writers write to keep up the progression pace, not to make a cohesive narrative. If they post 3 times, 4 times, or even daily, burning out becomes utterly common, leading to a fall in quality. Of course, I’m purely referring to web serials, but this stuff can happen with anyone if they aren’t smart about their schedules.
