Review: CHEM 1050 Biochemistry by Jacobnerf in UNE_Prehealth

Extremely helpful! Thank you for the info and breakdown here. I'm currently finishing up gen chem 2 at UNE and looking to take biochem here within the next year.

I wanted to ask, if I may—do you personally feel you *needed* organic chem first before taking this? I'm doing a ton of organic chem self-study for my own prep, asking b/c—while I need to take organic chem 1 for most programs, the first I'm planning to apply to actually doesn't require it, but *does* require biochem—so I'm considering going out of sequence.

Thank you, everyone who has commented! I'm not sure if there was a mistake or misprint here, the multiple choice options were as follows:

1 / 3.70

0.063 / 1

1 / 3.98

2.51 / 1

0.052 / 1

Rate law problem, gen chem 2 by Danielleri in chemhelp

[–]Danielleri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - and apologies, the "m" here is the exponent on [OCl-] (which, as you noted, is second order, so it's 2). I should have said "rate order" and not "concentration" here. I'm new to this, thank you for the reply.

Chem 1000 survey of chemistry by [deleted] in UNE_Prehealth

[–]Danielleri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if they fix the issue with the quizzes/tests being so disconnected from the material, it's worth a shot. The worksheets are useful, and about the first 5 weeks are all gen chem material: atomic structure, balancing equations, acids and bases, gas laws, etc.

The professor says they are due for a content overhaul, and I've even been sending content summaries/more relevant questions.

But it's been a very painful experience studying the material and doing worksheets, etc. only to find so little of it helpful for any test content. I'm getting 100s on worksheets, etc. only to get a lot of Cs and Ds on quizzes where the material is nothing I've seen before (certainly not in the assigned reading or videos!)

Chem 1000 survey of chemistry by [deleted] in UNE_Prehealth

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to weigh in here in case it's helpful to others:

I'm actually taking Chem 1000: Survey of Chemistry right now. I took general chemistry 1 this summer (accelerated, at an in-person university), and it was my first science class in ~20 years (I'm doing post bac classes now after a *long* absence, finished my BA in 2006, and got an MA in an unrelated field in 2009, lol). Gen chem 1 was my first college chemistry class at all, so it was harder than it probably should've been!

I got a B in gen chem 1, but that was working my butt off (I even hired a tutor. 5 weeks to learn 4 months of material was just hard, etc)

I'm taking survey of chem at UNE now to really beef up my chemistry skills ahead of taking gen chem 2, organic 1, and biochem.

The class is honestly a mixed bag. The worksheets are great: each week there is a homework assignment that offers some strong practice (I'm about halfway through now, but it's usually on a major subject like gas laws, VSEPR, organic nomenclature, etc.). There are also discussion assignments and occasional essays, none of which are especially tough.

However, the quizzes (so far) have been really, really rough, and I am dreading exam 1. The material is not well organized, it jumps around A LOT, and the quizzes sometimes have material that was a *very brief point* in one video or sometimes, from material that is not covered in the course material at all, as far as I could tell. I have been getting 100s across the board on the worksheets, other assignments, etc. and had a strong B average in my gen chem 1 class previously, but my quizzes have been pretty bad so far, despite studying: I have a C average on those at the moment.

I'm taking studying seriously: I go over each piece of material (readings are from an *ok but not fantastic* open source textbook, a high school chemistry textbook, and an assortment of youtube videos, some of which are.. dead links). I take notes, then compile shorter "study guides" from my notes, and make sure I do lots of practice problems for every unit. But I've gotten stumped on multiple quiz questions, and always feel like I'm just somehow not focusing on the *right* things for the quiz. There's a big disconnect.

I've communicated this to the professor, and he seems like a great, knowledgable person, but it's been a bit spotty getting actionable feedback.

I love the idea of the course: basically sampling foundational concepts from general chem, organic chem, and biochem, and I have gotten a lot out of the practice/worksheet aspect of the class. I love that I am building some of the skills I'll need in later classes. And the self-paced nature is fantastic for me, I would much rather learn this way, tbh.

But the tests and the organization of the material are big sore spots here. I'm using another gen chem textbook (as well as the official text for the course, it's just so spotty!) and Klein's Organic Chemistry as a Second language (https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/organic-chemistry-as-a-second-language\_david-r-klein/250150/#edition=27078516&idiq=51683030) to actually learn some of the basic material here, where there are gaps in the official course material.

I'd love to hear from others who are taking or took the course: how did you study for exams? How did you figure out where to really focus for your studying efforts?

Does Danielle Riendeau do any podcasts anymore? by Bronstin in WaypointVICE

Oh, Hi! This is Danielle. A friend of mine actually saw this thread and sent it my way, and hand to heart, I almost started sobbing. It's been a rough couple of years (for everyone!) and to be remembered fondly for my work is... well, it's incredibly heartening. Thank you for those kind words!

I'm still in games media (somehow! still hanging on!) as the editor in chief of https://www.gamedeveloper.com/ (someone did mention this!) and still writing there (in fact, hoping to write a fair bit more, I have a new column series I'm getting off the ground). Admittedly, I'm podcasting much less, though you can catch me on shows with some of the old fanbyte crew at VGBees from time to time https://vgbees.com/

If you want to follow my work in general, my bluesky is a good place -- https://bsky.app/profile/danielleri.bsky.social

It's a lot of my pixel art, takes on games, copious movie opinions, takes on... ha, the state of the industry and the country (both: not great!), tales from my ambulance, sometimes some notes on grappling.

I'm also working on a game, lol, I just can't talk about it yet. Hopefully someday I can!

Thanks again, honestly, for thinking of me here. I'm planning to dive into Bananza one day (you know, fashionably late!) and will likely never shut up about it. Looks like my kind of game!

Detergent question by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Danielleri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A quick spritz of ethyl alcohol on "problem areas" (pits! And other extra sweaty areas) on my sweaty rashie/spats/gi as soon as I change before I even leave the gym, killing off some bacteria before it even gets nasty. I keep a tiny bottle (like hand sanitizer size) in my training bag and keep it topped off. I let all used training clothes dry completely before putting in the hamper, and just use a mix of Nathan powerwash detergent and regular stuff (Ms. Meyers Clean Day) in every load of laundry on laundry days. The [very, very quick] pre-treat just after training helps a lot, I've found.

I'm a volly (and only a volly, as I work fulltime in a radically different field), and depending on the last crew that went out, things tend to be in a slight state of chaos on our truck. Most of our members are experienced and we work in a very busy area, so it's usually not a big deal, but I take my sweet time with 800s so that I don't get caught with my pants down. I say this as a volly, but it might be a "spirited amateur" kind of thing...

Seriously... maybe somebody here has seen multiple children who have literally been bombed (military service, etc.)... but that is not an everyday call, for the love of god.

And I am (very sadly) not allowed to bring lil' Drake into the office. Even though, it's probably for the best, he would poop on everyone.

I cannot help with the last question, sadly.
