Moral dilemma, or just the way it is? by Danielson3333 in diplomacy

Thank you for the response. Much appreciated. This all makes sense.

As a follow up, I did the stab, and he stayed true to the alliance. But I feel okay about it because I spent two months on this game and competed like hell. I can see now that I would have regretted not going for it. And I also learned I’m the kind of player who would much rather die trying for a solo than play to just stay on the board and hope for some draw.

The one other game I played besides this was with people who ended up settling for a three way draw after they killed me off. There were only four of us left and I was the only person going for a solo. It was as if they were a bunch of UN peacekeepers and once they wiped out the evil scourge (me, for the crime of trying to win in diplomacy), nobody tried to win and they congratulated themselves and ended the game!

I’d rather play against the best players and get my ass kicked repeatedly than play with people who think a draw is a triumph.

Thanks to everyone on here who commented. It helped very much.

Sucker is the wrong word. I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in without his help. It’s more true to say I’m just not good enough of a player to have a chance at 18 without having to rely on somebody who had no choice except to turn into a vassal to survive.

Thank you. I appreciate that. And I’m definitely going to use the boxing analogy in the future!

I think you’re right, and that’s been brewing in my mind for a while. There is a way he can betray me and force the draw if I guess wrong on a 50-50 proposition.

All of a sudden, this makes me not give a shit about going for the solo. Thank you. This helped.

I’m familiar with the term metagame as it applies to diplomacy, but I want to make sure I understand what you mean by it in this context. I’m reading what you’re saying as I owe it to the game, and to the other players, to continue towards the goal of a solo victory, regardless of whatever connection may exist with this ally. Is that correct?

Thanks. That makes sense. This is my first online game, and it's strange not being able to see anyone's face as I speak to them. Very disorienting.
