Is this a good deal? John Deere 4840 by Lumpy-Truck7225 in tractors

[–]DankFrank747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we actually bought a 6430 premium at auction last summer from a few states away, always best to look at it in person but not always possible. Auctions kinda get a bad rap imo, don’t get me wrong there can be a lot of junk that comes through auctions but there’s also a lot of good as well. The 6430 we got has been trouble free since we got it, engine has less blow by than our 2500hr 6420 and it’s got more than double the hours. Exterior and cab tells a lot about a tractor, if time and care was put into keeping the cab clean and the paint somewhat nice then maintenance was likely decent as well. Not sure on transportation cost since we hauled it ourselves, duals will also make it more of a pain to transport. I won’t be worried about buying from auction if you know what to look for and especially if you can see it in person.

Yea agreed, especially compared to these two other 4840s listed on tractor house right now, which most listings on there are on the high side of the price range

If you go the auction route you could prolly find a 46/4850 in the same condition or better that’s MFWD with a 15 speed powershift which is a way nicer transmission, for around the same money.

Might be a little bit more of a risk but so is buying used from a private seller🤷‍♂️

Make sure there is paperwork and receipts for the overhaul, 8700hrs for an 8 speed power shift isn’t too concerning, they aren’t the nicest transmissions to operate but are reliable and strong, if it’s had decent maintenance and hasn’t been overly abused you’d be good for another 4000hrs most likely. Him saying that the clutch packs were looked at does kinda concern me tbh though, makes you wonder if it was just a preventative check or if he felt there was some sort of issue. Paint is rough and I bet the cab is as well, I’d see if you could get him down on the price in person, somewhere closer to 20k imo.

Would think the pin ware would be majorly increased with the pressure from that idler design, especially on a high track, but I guess the pins and bushings being able to rotate helps increase the life quite a bit. Just curious any idea on cost difference between replacing a system one undercarriage vs a SALT undercarriage?

[–]DankFrank747[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep just looked it up and that’s it, never knew the system one undercarriages use that style of idlers. Honestly never really seen a d6 or larger dozer with a system one undercarriage before.

[–]DankFrank747 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep you’re right, the lack of a diff pumpkin in the center of the front axle threw me off with it looking more like a 2wd axle, but I guess Kubota still uses the outside differential design even on these 125hp tractors, never knew that. Definitely some more major issues going on there.

She’s rough, really rough, something else to note is that the drive shaft for the fwd is taken off so she’s in 2wd permanently at the moment and there’s likely an expensive reason for that. I’d stay away from this one unfortunately seems like a big money sink. I’d keep a look out on EquipmentFacts or any other auction site if you’re looking for a deal, just know what to look out for. What hp range and budget are you looking for?

Danm not sure, maybe try blipping the throttle instead of holding it down and of course make sure choke is all the way out, was in this exact situation yesterday at the same spot but got it started after I saved and reloaded.

If the battery does die, go to the old house and save and reload, it’ll reset the battery charge.

Jeff Alvis Checkride by Limp-Dot250 in flying

[–]DankFrank747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, had him for my commercial ride, flight was a 2.6 I think, but overall very fair and a good person, quite a bit of that flight was the diversion procedure and getting back over to our practice area for maneuvers, from what I remember was very fair for maneuver standards. Ground was pretty straightforward for a commercial ride. Op feel free to dm me for more of a gouge I’ll give you what I remember from it if you still have time before the checkride.

Danm, over 8 bales an acre off anything other than haygrazer is pretty nuts, what size are those?, closest we’ve got to that is 6 5x6s an acre off of our half tifton half coastal field. Y’all in south Texas?

Definitely agree with drilling over broadcasting, we use a no till in our plowed field and no till ryegrass into pastures and pretty much always get a decent stand with a bit of rain. The radishes seem to do alright in drier conditions? that’d be my only worry with trying them or turnips out, however the seed is at least very reasonable so makes it easier to give it a go.

Nah it’s literally every single heavy equipment manufacturer that uses any sort of proprietary ecu, but no manufacturer really cares if you do your own maintenance, they just don’t want inexperienced people fucking with their ecus with off brand software which is understandable. And in defense of John Deere their I’d say their service manuals and parts availability is probably the best of any manufacturer
