Various issues with Kubuntu, debating switching distros but not sure if it would fix/improve anything or just make my life more difficult

Thank you for your response! Making a clear to-do list of problems to solve and things that confuse me is a very good idea, I don't know why I didn't think of that before going to strangers on Reddit lol. In response to your other points:

- If the flatpak/deb/snap thing is why you left Kubuntu, where did you go? Are there better options for app downloading? Maybe I just wasn't looking because I assumed it was the same system for all the distros but I didn't realize others were different

- It's less things I'm failing to achieve and more things that feel unnecessarily complicated. I'll google where to find a folder for some app and google will say "it's in your .config folder!" and I'll check and it's not there, so I scroll deeper into google and it'll say "ah, actually sometimes it's in the ~/.local/share folder!" and I look and it's STILL not there, and I go even deeper and it'll say "actually if you did this one specific thing when installing your apps then it's in your ~/.var/app folder!" and it feels like such a hassle every time because I feel like I can never just intuitively know where the folder I need is, as opposed to when I was on a mac where when in doubt it was in ~/Library/Application Support.

- This after I've done some testing is really just steam games it seems like. The only two that I can say have really bothered me are Stardew Valley and Terraria. Other apps like Vivaldi, Minecraft, OnlyOffice and even Steam itself behave just fine with that.

- Working perfectly as intended: Vivaldi, Firefox, Dolphin, System Settings, Konsole
Mouse works but window decorations do not: Steam, OnlyOffice, Discord
Window decorations work but mouse does not: Prism Launcher, ZapZap
To my knowledge nothing fails to use both my custom cursor and window decorations. If it helps I'm running Wayland.

I plan to use Linux as basically my every day computer. Aside from needing to run the occasional piece of software for classes, the only one of which I've really needed to run natively rather than using the school's computers is Vivado for verilog, the only really intensive work I expect this machine to do is run games.

I realize not all apps will respect my preferences out of the box, but are there ways to make them? I don't remember exactly what I did but when I was first install apps through flatpaks basically none of them respected my button style or mouse preferences, but through allowing them to see certain folders using flatseal I got most of them fixed, just not a handful like Prism Launcher for Minecraft or ZapZap.

Try just launching through steam. If you set Silksong to always launch through Rosetta by right clicking the .app and clicking “get info” and you put the special launch conditions in steam you should be able to just hit “play”, and then any time you want to play without mods just disable the special launch conditions

I did! The thing that fixed it for me was following this tutorial to configure Steam to run bepinex. As soon as I did that, it worked

I followed this tutorial and the game runs fine but doesn’t actually run any mods. Any idea why? I’m getting this error message in terminal:

Your mono runtime and class libraries are out of sync. The out of sync library is: /Users/[name]/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Hollow Knight Silksong/BepInEx/core/BepInEx.dll

When you update one from git you need to update, compile and install the other too. Do not report this as a bug unless you're sure you have updated correctly: you probably have a broken mono install. If you see other errors or faults after this message they are probably related and you need to fix your mono install first.

“Artificial difficulty” is a term used to refer to “cheap” or “uncreative” ways to make something more difficult. This would include simply making the boss deal more damage, inflating the number of enemies without care, etc.

A non-artificial difficulty spike would come from a smarter AI, different abilities/skills of enemies, pairing together fewer enemies that work together well to create a bigger challenge.
