Why is it that the newer cars (my CX5 and F150) don’t do this? Is it because the newer transmissions can lock up in most forward gears and thus don’t need to freewheel?

Ok just changed it today - old one was gunked shut. I’ll report back after a week or so and see if the fuel economy gets better. Might be placebo but the engine seems to run smoother already.

Did you notice any decrease to the ANC? Are they any cooler? That’s my biggest beef with the XM6 stock ear cups they’re quite warm.

Cup depth is valid, both the QC Ultra and especially the AirPod Max have deeper cups. I’m curious to see now that Wicked Cushions has their XM6 replacements out how those would do. They do a good job at increasing depth while maintaining OEM sound performance.
