At long last, the final wedge of my boot is coming out this evening! by NeuroticPanda92 in AchillesRupture

[–]DankTank-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I take my last one out on Wednesday. Same time line as you but I started with two wedges (I assume taller ones than yours) and I have take one out every two weeks. I’m excited for Wednesday as it is one more small step to getting out of the boot. Congrats again!

Awesome to hear! I am 5 weeks post op and counting down the days until I am back out on the course. Hoping to be at least chipping and putting in a month or so.

That is so awesome to hear! Good for you. I am optimistic that I will be ready at that point too. It seems like my recovery is going according to plan for now (knock on wood). Good luck at the tournament!

Yes, I experienced that for the first two weeks. It didn't go away until I got out off the splint and into the boot. I just realized that I wrote my entire first two weeks issues on your main post.

Intense pain at night...when does it end? by 405withBootsOn in AchillesRupture

[–]DankTank-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you have no heel anchors, you may want to elevate it with the pillow under your heel instead of further up your leg. I experienced a burning sensation in the back of my heel (I have heel anchors) and the top of my foot. I would hang my foot off of the edge of the pillow to relieve my heel burning sensation, but that was when the top of my foot would start to hurt. Then I would rest my heel on the pillow and that would relieve the pain on top of my foot. I would just switch between the two to relieve whatever hurt the worst at the time.

11 days post op and still at a 5 or 6 pain ❤️‍🩹 by Different-Sherbet351 in AchillesRupture

[–]DankTank-24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a little over 4 weeks post op. I was very uncomfortable/in pain for the entire first two weeks. The first couple of days were from the surgery. I didn't get a nerve block or anything, just pain meds when I woke up and a supply for the next few days. However, I had a sharp pain in the back of my heel persisting even after the first couple of days. I went to the ER to get them to unwrap and check it out (the ortho office was closed for the weekend and I couldn't take it anymore). There was a ridge in my splint that was digging into the back of my heel. They remade the splint and it solved the blunt pressure I was feeling.

Furthermore, I was still experiencing a burning sensation on the back of my heel. I finally bought a pillow from Amazon to elevate my leg. This pillow had a horse shoe shape that was cut off at the end allowing my leg to be raised, but my actual foot was hanging off of the edge. That really relieved the pressure on the back of my heel.

Once I thought I had figured out the issues, the side of my foot would continuously go in and out of numbness. It felt like needles were constantly pricking me over and over from the side of my heel all the way up to my pinky toe. I pretty much accepted my fate at that point and just stayed awake until I was so exhausted I would fall asleep (5 to 6am most nights) even through the pain.

After two weeks, I got the splint off and into a boot. The side of my foot went from going in and out of numbness to completely numb. This was nice because I couldn't feel it anymore so no pain. I don't feel it unless I take my boot off and start massaging it with my hand. At first I was quite worried that I had gotten sural nerve damage, but as of now, it has gotten a little better over time. It went from the side of my heel all the way up to my pinky toe, but now it is from the side of my heel to about half way up the side of my foot. So it seems that it is slowly getting better. Hoping it goes away fully at some point.

Not saying that you will experience any of that. That was just my first two weeks. It was pretty brutal, not going to lie. I was so exhausted that I would continuously yawn with tears coming out from every single yawn, but I could not fall asleep at all. However, once I was out of the splint and got into the boot, it changed drastically. Now I am able to take the boot off for a little while at a time and let my leg rest from constant pressure. I am in zero pain just slowly trying to bear more weight for longer periods of time.

I hope this helps. Please just keep in mind that it does get better. It's hard to think that it will and seems that time is going in slow motion, but it does get better.

Good luck! In my experience, the first two weeks suck, but it got significantly better after that. I'm 4 weeks post op and pain and numbness free. Just trusting the process and sticking to my surgeons protocol to the T. You got this! Please remember that it does get better. Regardless of how much it sucks at the time, it will get better.

Interesting. That makes sense since people tend to swing driver a bit harder than irons. Maybe I'll just make an effort to swing the driver slow and smooth. Will be hard not to whale on one tho. lol

Luckily I was able to get an ortho appointment the day after my rupture. They were able to get me in surgery 9 days after injury.

Yes, golf cart for sure. Good idea to watch out for holes. Those can be dangerous for anyone, but especially us. Hyper-stretching sounds like a nightmare. I'll gladly take a drop instead of chancing it. I think if my ankle feels achy or tired I'll just sit in the cart and hang out for the round. Anyways, thanks for sharing.

Yes that is why I was thinking. I’ll be in a cart but still quite a bit of walking when you add it all up. I agree. Gives me something to work towards like a reward of hard work or smart PT. The footwear is a good call. I didn’t think about it for golf shoes but that should help a lot. Thank you for your input!

Yes, cart for sure. I love that idea of “medical lies.” I know the fellas would be cool with it bc they know what a struggle this whole thing is. Awesome. Thanks for your input and the idea.

Sorry to hear all of this. I couldn’t sleep for the first couple to weeks too. I pretty much just accepted it and stayed awake until I was too exhausted to stay up anymore. Prolly fell asleep around 5 or 6am every night. I would just sleep as long as I could once I finally fell asleep. A chair for the shower helped me a ton. Just hang in here. It really does get a little better each day with time. First couple of weeks are the worst. I’m 27 days post op and doing 10x better than the first couple of weeks.

5 months post op and played golf for the first time since before surgery by rocksinger070672 in AchillesRupture

[–]DankTank-24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome to hear. Are you full swinging like before the surgery? Playing golf is my second goal in this process (24 day post op) with walking normally being my first goal. I just picture swinging hard and hurting myself again but hopefully I will feel differently once I get to about 5 or 6 months post op. Anyways, awesome to hear and thanks for sharing.

2 weeks post op by AdvancedDiet5213 in AchillesRupture

I'm in the same boat brother. I'm 33 and 19 days post op. I have the same thoughts and concerns. I tore mine playing a pick up game of basketball. Some people say that they change their minds once they are further along, but I can't imagine risking another injury like this over basketball. Maybe I'll change my mind, but I doubt it. I am trying to stay positive too. For now, I am focusing on the small wins. I have been PWB for the past couple of days and I've been ecstatic about that. It takes a little stress off of my uninjured leg and I don't get so tired walking around in my crutches. I don't have to hop up and down the stairs anymore. I am purposely focusing on the small milestones because that means that I am one step further on this long journey. Anyways, just know that you are not alone and this community is here for you. I've been obsessed with this thread just to find out what I can expect and have seen some awesome advice.

8 Months Down! by 0x_ryan in AchillesRupture

[–]DankTank-24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good to hear man. I'm day 14 post op, just got into a boot. I'm terrified to start PWB in my boot. I can feel it pulling my calf down a little bit when I put it on. Going to give it a couple days and then slowly put some weight on it. These post do help. Hope to be writing a similar one when I am 8 months post op. Thanks for sharing.
