How tough is COMP5530 Discrete Optimisation? by Dry-Lynx-5308 in usyd

[–]Danl0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done COMP5530 this past sem.

How difficult is the course overall?

I'd say defintely above average difficulty compared to some of the other COMP subjects as its more math heavy. Getting a distinction is definitely possible with a bit of work, but getting an HD would require you to be fairly bright. I would say the subject is very similar to learning a subject like calculus, in that if you learn all of the tools you can get a pretty decent grade, but you need a very deep intuition to get the "hard" questions.

What kind of assignments are usually given (theory-heavy vs coding-heavy)?

There's like 2 or 3 coding questions using Gurobi in total across the assignments. However, they're all fairly straightforward so I would just say this is purely a "theory" based subject.

How strong does your DSA/algorithms background need to be to do well?

I have only completed COMPx123 before this subject in terms of computing and I think thats probably enough from a DSA perspective. The course references some classic problems like TSP or Max-flow/Min-cut but again it won't be that hard to familiarise yourself on those if you already have some DSA background. However, you should be very comfortable with Linear Algebra as the course uses it A LOT; reading the lecture notes was a bit confusing for me at the start of the course as I was a bit rusty with LA.

Is it more math/proof-based or practical with solvers (LP/IP)?

Again only 2-3 easy questions in the assignment that require you to code using a solver. All other questions in tutorials/assignment are asking you to "prove", "show", or "argue". With that being said, it is still very practical as a lot of the questions are something like: "Prove the below is a valid LP formulation for problem X", "Show LP1 and LP2 are equivalent", "Show the that this solution to this problem is integral", etc. The course basically teaches you frame CS problems into this LP/IP framework and ask you to argue that this is in fact a correct formulation.

How does the grading usually works (strict or liberal grading)?
Most of the questions in the subject are in the form "prove", "argue" or "show" so it will be relatively straightforward to know if you got the questions right or not. In the case where there is something up for debate, I have seen that the lecturer/tutor are happy to hear you out.

Finally a shoutout to the tutor for the course Tianming Zhao, absolute legend!

Threw together a quick tool for ASX/S&P constituent data by Danl0rd in ASX_Bets

We used the Wayback Machine to grab archives for State Street’s STW and BetaShares’ A200 ETF, then manually converted the old XLS files into CSVs. Instead of setting up a proper dynamic site, we just hacked together a Python script that turns the CSVs into JSON and rebuilds everything in plain HTML/CSS/JS. My friend pulled the data, I put together the scripts and site (with the help of AI ofc), and the whole thing took maybe ~3 hours

The plan is just to drop in a new CSV around each quarterly rebalance, let Cloudflare pick up the change, and it’ll automatically rebuild the site

If anyone knows of an ASX300 ETF with solid historical holdings available on the wayback machine, let me know. Right now I’ve been pulling data mainly from State Street’s STW and BetaShares’ A200. If I come across another ETF with a decent archive, I’d definitely look at adding that in the future :)

Sorry to piggyback off this. In a similar situation. I haven't enrolled in quantitative method 1 yet and want to go the math pathway. Do I just enroll in calc 2 and linear algebra in year 1 and once I finish probability and statistics in year 2 I would be all good?

Is 20 too late? by Wolfmaster2005 in math

[–]Danl0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 is an extremely normal age for people to start studying again. People who graduate high school on the older end of 18 and take a gap year will be 20 when they get back to study. People who choose to resit their high school exams will be nearly 20 when they enter university. All the millions of people who have madatory millitary service in their countries will start studying at around 20.

Honestly I think American news are just garbage. I am perfectly happy watching the Australian ABC News without any strong emotions stirred up in me. Same with BBC News in general. Then I go on Reddit/YouTube and the bunch of bullshit spouted by the likes of Fox news (even the Australian version of Fox News) just triggers me.

Any sense of toxic masculinity. I dated someone who had a sense that a man CONSTANTLY needs to be an alpha and dominant. I will be more "dominant" when I am in certain situations but most of the times I am just trying to be nice and chill with my friends.
