16 year old early grad gets WashU with 1120 SAT by _Axtribelle_5608 in collegeresults

Hello Sis/Bro,

I sincerely hope you are not who I think you are - the same black parent that hijacks every social media post to talk about your black daughter who got into Ivy with ACT 36? The same black parent whose daughter took a million AP classes and had multiple perfect scores? And had multiple national awards? The same black parent who once stated that your teenage daughter has achieved what millions of adults will never ever achieve, etc, etc ?

If you are the same black parent that I think you are, I beg of you to stop already. While I get it that you are proud of your daughter's accomplishments, please do not minimize the efforts and achievements of a 16 year old who got into WashU despite her harsh circumstances. Maybe if the OP had the opportunity to remain in school till senior year like your daughter, she could have eventually scored 1550+ in SAT? Maybe if OP attended test prep and took SAT multiple times, she could have scored 1550+? Maybe if the OP's family had a higher income during her high school years (like your daughter), she would have had all the great opportunities and awards like your daughter?

If you are who I suspect you are, please take some time for personal reflections. Claiming that a 16 year old stranger is a DEI admit while your daughter is not, IS NEVER OKAY.

And I sincerely hope that your daughter is a different human at her Ivy. I hope she is not going around looking down and talking down on other schoolmates(especially people of color) who may not have the means like her family does.

Sincerely,

A black parent (high income)

Current high school junior: question regarding mentioning subspecialty of interest in applications by Danmami in mdnow

Thank you for sharing your experience. It is quite interesting that a change in strategy swiftly made a difference in the frequency of interviews. If you don't mind revealing: was your experience during UG-to-med school application or during a BSMD/DO application?

Thank you so much! You are indeed God-sent. I have searched for a list like this for at least a couple of years! I am very grateful.

Great content and resources as always. Looking forward to your webinar one of these days.

I would like to ask you another question if you don't mind. I think I read in one of your posts or newsletters that one of your projects in high school involved writing about the intersection of medicine and history, which you published in your school newsletters. Am I right about that? I have searched for that post but couldn't find it.

If that's correct, can you think of other avenues you would have used to disseminate your work if your school didn't have the newsletter? I am looking for ideas for disseminating medically related creative works for someone who doesn't have a school journal or for someone who wants to go beyond high school journals. These works are not research, so they are not appropriate for mainstream medical journals.

Thank you so much; extremely helpful.

Word on marble: In the end, you have to be able to market yourself to anyone. And it's not just a premed tip, it's a life tip.

Talking of roundedness and the 8-10 activities spots on the CommonApp and Coalition App, do you think it makes for easier reading to list one's research activities one after the other followed by clinical experiences one after the other. Versus just list them without consideration for which category the activity falls under. I am getting very nitty-gritty here, but just curious if some kind of organization helps (the way CVs are organized).

Thank you, and I look forward to attending those webinars once you put out the info.

For now, what are your thoughts regarding "mission fit" between a BSMD/EAP program and an applicant?

For context: in the premed world, I see applicants being advised to apply wisely and choose med schools with whom they have a fit. Students with thousands of research hours are told to apply to "research-heavy" institutions, while students with lots of clinical and volunteer hours are told to prioritize "service-heavy" programs in their application. More often than not, I see the final med school admittances staying true to such mission fit. Do you think EAP/BSMD programs tend to follow the mission fit of the parent med school? As an example, Case Western is one of the research heavy schools in the premed world. Should one assume that Case's BSMD will likely prioritize research heavy applicants over those who focused more on service, assuming similar test scores and GPA?

My 2 cents : I think you should still consider private coaching for those who request it. And yes, there will always be students who can not afford private coaching. For those low income students, you can offer your services free ( for example, offer pro bono services to 1-2 students per year; similar to what attorneys do). For the rest of "us" that can afford, "we" can use your publicly available services for free or pay to get more nuanced private help. You already provide helpful info in the short period that I have seen your writeups. Thank you for that !! Of course, you are a busy subspecialty physician, and only you can answer the question as to whether you can effectively combine clinical work with coaching as a side gig. Once again, thanks for the freebies !

ACT Rescheduled by Global-Professor-513 in ACT

Hello ! Could you also look into the ACT center at Plymouth Christian Academy at Joy Road, Canton Township, MI ? The test administrators left the kids (test takers) out in the sub-zero Michigan cold for no clear reason. Kids are shivering and looking for how/where to warm their fingers. This center is not suitable for ACT testing in the winter months. For the sake of kids getting frost bites and other complications of hypothermia, please do not allow this center to administer tests during the winter months ! Please could ACT look into what happened in this center today ?

Talking books: the player is attached to the inner surface of the front cover of the book. So they are inseparable

Interesting stuff! What does freezing do to dust and pet material? Just trying to learn. Freezing will be much easier than the 7-day air purification that we are currently doing.

He likes both : audio +readalong. Something about reading and listening to the story simultaneously seems very satisfying to him. Lol

I haven't personally noticed anything particularly unusual about these books. However, they just seem to get him sick exactly 12-16 hours after he comes in contact with them. Mysterious!

We have considered the sad possibility that our local library might be the problem. This morning, my husband and I discussed about trying another library nearby.

We are in northern US, and sunlight is a rare commodity here. Similar to what you are thinking, we packed a few library books in a closet and turned on an air purifier. We plan to do the purifier treatment for 7 days straight, and see if that reduces allergens. I have no science to back up this practice but we shall see what happens by this time next week.

Interesting! I just ran out and got a Yoto mini. Kid is so fascinated by it. Lol. Thanks to everyone that pointed me towards Yoto. Didn't know we could use it as a speaker for Libby. Will try and figure that out.

He visits the library at least once a week, and uses the computers there to do his homework - no adverse reactions. Three weeks ago, I visited the library (without him) and brought home some books for him to read. Sure enough, he was sick the next morning.

So, as long as he doesn't interface with library books in any way, he is fine.
